Vetoed. The 2496 (and IIRC other M-Audio cards) are very problematic on many Windows 7/64-bit systems, just check the M-Audio forums. I'd guess they can't write proper drivers, but some statements from M-Audio employees point to bad hardware design. Any which way, just don't buy M-Audio hardware if you intend to use 64-bit Windows. Seriously. I loved my 2496 while I was on WinXP. Now on Win7 I can't wait for the day I can get rid of it. And I won't even be able to sell it with clear conscience because it's so crap. Good job, M-Audio...Peter999 wrote:but if you're on a budget, an m-audio 2496 is a great card, especially for the money; good converters and good drivers; all the web-audio examples have been done on a system with that card

No problems here with this card - works flawlessly in win 7 pro 64 alongside with an rme hdsp 9632; but mainly using it for ProTools M-Powered (while using the rme for cubase)
Of course you need to get the newest 64bit drivers that it works correctly in win 7 64

Since I use Win7 64 Bit I sometimes hear crackles when I use the 24/96 with ASIO drivers. No problems with DirectSound.

what asio drivers are you using? normally most windows internal drivers are unusable, too much latency with too much cpu load

Hi Peter,
I use the latest driver from M-Audio. However, the issue I noticed is not related to any VSTi synth since I hear those crackles with any synth.

interesting, didn't know; anyway just using the m-audio for protools, since 8 is still locked to hardware (9 will run on any card, so too on rme); I however never use 24/96 - I'm completely happy with 24/44, in fact I can't hear a difference really (not even between 16/24 if levels are decent); I however can hear the difference between different converters and clocks, and so I spend much more attention to this; 16/44 using a good converter is still miles better than 24/96 using a bad one... my opinion
the m-audio is really good when you clock it externally, without it lacks a bit in detail and plasticism (but nevertheless warm and noisefree)

Its a shame the demo is so crippled with the pitch going up and down like that, makes it really hard to get a feel for the synth

There should be a choice for an alternative demo
which just cuts the sound out instead of all the
pitch weirdness. I and others had requested the
alternative because it really is impossible to
get a proper idea with the pitch change. After
using the alternative I ending up buying it and
it really is gorgeous and powerful!
Cheers,
Scott

Thanks, guys. Just updated the OP-X Pro. It sounds terrific. I have to choose between the PPG Wave V3 and OP-X Pro. I chose the OP-X Pro II, because I like his sound.

regarding upgrades it's good to know that you actually get a completely separate synth which won't deactivate/overwrite the "old"; OP-X and OP-X PRO can be used furthermore, and OP-X PRO-II can be instralled and used independently at the same time; so it won't mess up your sessions in any way
Furthermore OP-X PRO-II can load and play all former OP-X PRO patches, so too all your custom patches, which you can refine then with the new features (add effects/increase polyphony/add new lfo and arpeggio features, refine detunings etc.)
For completeness the complete former soundlibrary (OP-X PRO library) including all later added reloads has been cleaned (second unused part of the banks which now can hold 128 patches instead of 64) and is provided collected in a separate folder that you can download and place into the OP-X PRO-II library for completeness - you can download it here:
http://www.sonicprojects.ch/opxpro2/userarea.html
The $35 upgrade offer lasts only still until December 31st, so don't miss it, it's a must-go imho

Peter,
Allow me to say thanks for the really great improvements to what was already a top notch synth
!!! I love
everything about the new version , and it's very apparent that you listen to the input you received PLUS went even beyond those improvements ....
Any previous owner who doesn't fork up the $35( dam that was worth it
!!) is doing themselves quite a disservice !!!

Can OPX do something like the Start Engines patch from the OB8 like on this page
http://www.synthmania.com/ob-8.htm
It has no practical use, just curious how in depth it can get. I love the demo btw, except I think the dropouts are WAY too frequent.

Here's something alike (just edited the "Vapour Train Noise" patch a bit):GruvSyco wrote:Can OPX do something like the Start Engines patch from the OB8 like on this page

Audioclip:

Patch (fxp):
Download patch (zipped)
Just play with the "LFO Rate" knob to increase/decrease speed (which you too could automate using vst automation)
If you're interested what the potential of OP-X PRO-II for experimental and weird sound is then check the "PROII_Effects" and "PROII_Matrix" bank; with FM / RigMod / Cross Modulation / Sync / FilterenvMod / FilterSelfResonance / MorphableFilter there are a lot of features for experimantal sounds, much much more than in an OB-8, more like Matrix in fact. Some examples:
Listen: OP-X PRO-II - Baby Scream
Listen: OP-X PRO-II - Long Wave receiver
Listen: OP-X PRO-II - XPander Landing Jet
