When I was in college and holding two jobs down I got a backstage pass to see Ted Nugent. I fell asleep before the first set ended. It's amazing the sounds one can block out when one is really really tired.

would you guess whether voodoo mod would do a good job on a JMP1 ??Uncle E wrote: I've got a Voodoo-modded MP1, a Hafler-Bogner, and two Soldano's (one purple, one gray) and none of them do it for me like a proper amp.My voodoo-modded DSL slays them.

No, not really.james0tucson wrote:You mean "distressed" or whatever? Ah, "relic" they call it.
I can't do anything but laugh when I see those. I'm sure some of them are fine instruments, but fine instruments for poseurs.
Afaik they are just a budget nitro finish, one or two coats less and not polished to high gloss. No relic.
Like Eric said, the thin finish is actually an advantage tonally.
Personally I like the looks, and I always found relicing a strange concept to put it mildly.
Some examples :

http://www.thomann.de/gb/gibson_explorer_faded_wc.htm
There's also a nice P-90 LP Studio with (worn) sunburst finish atm
http://www.thomann.de/gb/gibson_lp_stud ... 90_hcs.htm
Thomann only serves as an example here, check out others.
As with all Gibson guitars better compare a few to find the best one, same could be said for the Custom Shop models, too.
Worth noting that the Burstbucker Pro / 5 humbuckers found in some of these guitars are not really suited for higher gain though they sound great for bluesy stuff. If that bothers you, swap them out for EMGs or DiMarzios or something, the Burstbuckers sell for good money s/h.
The other PUs are perfectly allright.

I also prefer the less 'finished' examples also, when something has been glossed to the max it gets sticky and why i mainly i have maple necked guitars and if they are finished it is 'satin' as it feels smoother and i am a fan. The only one which is not as mentioned above is my Ibanez
The LTD Viper 1000's for the price Eric has them for is a really sweet deal! They are every bit as good as the gibson equivalent but different also that they do not clash IMO
Mike - If i could fall asleep to anything i would do man, i just can not. My head will not allow it unfortunately. Is nodding off at a TN show illegal over you way? :p You know like one of them 'unwritten' laws? Craveman
All the best and susiwong, this one should help for when you are in need of your morning caffeine hit or double its impact even:

I am going to give it a try, i have been after one of the little zoom h2 handy recorders for awhile and i picked one up recently when i bought a few other microhpones and it is really a handy little toy with decent quality on-board mic'strimph1 wrote:I used to do that with the big linear amps--recorded all the amps we had in the back room and boom--there I be all cuddled up---asleepNEKRO.MACHINE wrote:

Oh and my next couple of pedals are going to be James Brown's new AmpTweaker Tight Boost & Tight Drive pedals. Really great units and not just typical overdrive and boost pedals. You have to try them if you get a chance. They sound great in a series FX Loop and are also useable infront of an amp also
but not until January...January's new gear/new year hitlist is getting out of hand for a change
Sorry i meant they sound awesome infront of any amp but also useful in a series FX Loop, well the tightboost does to my ears anyway (sorry getting it muddled up
)
I have not watched any youtube video demo's but i tried them in my local and any peavey fan will know who the guy is

Edit/Demo videos of both by the man himself:

Do not watch if you might want one or both

That's what he gets for having such a nice instrument be his first guitar!Hink wrote:I still will never forget the day when I was like 22 and my best friend decided to play guitar so he bought a brand new Gibson Les Paul Goldtop 30th anniversary edition (and a polytone amp). The first time he sat down with it he didn't hold the neck, bent over to plug the cable in and the neck kicked up and gave him a fat lip.
It's funny, I've always thought of Gibsons as being almost too easy to play, thanks to the 24.75" scale. I'm usually a 25.5" scale guy but I'll pick up a 24.75" or 25" scale guitar when I'm trying to impress somebody.Writing, I want a guitar that will sit and stay in my lap and I do not want to fight it. If I had a Les Paul I would be too damn lazy to pick it up to play it.
That Viper 1000 sustains forever. Maybe it's the Tone Pros hardware? Actually, the only guitar here with sustain issues is one particular tele that has Kinman pickups, strings-through-body bridge, and brass barrel saddles, all of which should add up to massive sustain yet it feels dead. I haven't figured that one out.The other thing is the stop bar tail piece, I simply hate it. There really is nothing wrong with it besides the sustain lost (but bolt on necks, floyd rose systems do not help sustain either...only my daion with the neck through really benefits sustain wise from strings through the body)

That's not what I'm talking about, these days I'm multi-tasking going from playing to mouse work, keyborad stuff etc...I need a guitar that sits comfortable without having to save one hand for the guitar. My Warmoth strat is the best guitar for this, it's like a cat in your lap...it just sits there happily sleeping until I start to tickle her neck and then she just starts purring awayUncle E wrote:It's funny, I've always thought of Gibsons as being almost too easy to play, thanks to the 24.75" scale. The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I can't say, I haven't ever tried it. Keep in mind that everything they do has a metal slant.fateamenabletochange wrote:would you guess whether voodoo mod would do a good job on a JMP1 ??

that stuff can be tricky.
Assuming the sustain is bad across the board
- remove everything that is not needed for the strings to vibrate, i.e. pickguard, electronics, switchplate etc., there might be a resonance problem.
I've had issues like that with an ES-135 (well hidden, a messed up screw hole in the balsa center block
- try the body with a known good neck
- try the neck with a known good body
I've seen stunning incompatibility between necks and bodies, in fact my favourite orange Tele (pictured a few pages up) started life with a completely different neck, what a difference ! Interesting to note - the other guitar sounds better, too, now - win win.
Sorry, doesn't sound like too much fun, but you will know more afterwards.
Good luck,
susiwong
All that said, I don't see any evidence of good sustain being tied to a singular construction detail either, imho a balanced, sensible overall concept is mostly responsible for a guitar's sonic characteristics, the rest is good wood, attention to detail and a bit of luck.
Granted, a few definite mistakes can be made ...
