Hi Bill,bill45 wrote:Thanks Benjamin,
What guitar rig 4 components do you use for distortion?
I like those blues rock tracks you did ,early in the thread.
I mostly used default presets from the Classic Rock preset section. I only tweaked them a bit, but not much.

Hi Bill,
start with one of the default presets you like sound wise. After that replace the speaker simulation with 'Control Room', now listen to the different mics. You'll notice that some sound more harsh, some more warm, etc. Select the one you like best. After that start to bring in other mics (if you feel it's necessary). Do this till you got a mix of warm and detailed sound. That's why Control Room in GR4 is really cool!

I have to admit, the more I use and figure out Electri6ity the more and more I like it.
Now I have almost a perfect metal guitar and I even figured out how to put Electri6ity into Drop A and it is clean.

Nice! How is the retuning done, simple sample transposition? What are your ways to "metallize" Electri6ty?Kurari wrote:I have to admit, the more I use and figure out Electri6ity the more and more I like it.

Drums: Superior Drummer 2 Custom Avatar kit. Takes about 1.2 gigs with a stripped down kit and effects. Took me a month or so to craft this kit just right for my use.
Bass: This is actually just the fruityloops boobass. I hadn't gotten around to rewriting the bass for my usual Prominy SR5 bass. I usually write with the boobass just because its memory requirements are almost nothing.
Ampsims: Guitar Rig 3 for guitar and Ampeg svt for bass. I have Guitar Rig 4 and Rammfire but it murders my memory even when I have everything exported and its just waves. So I usually only use GR4 for leads and effects for verse parts.

Alien Leg:
It's Kontakt's "tune" knob.

Basically I turn it down 4 and then move my midi notes up 4 to compensate. Personally I use FL Studio and its all dots so what notes they don't matter as long as my ears know they are in the right key. So basically your just tricking it. But the fretboard in Electri6ity will be accurate to the tuning.
I spent 8-9 hours the other day messing around with Electri6ity so I could have a "metal" guitar and this is just one of the things I figured out. Because for me this was a huge factor. C is nice but I have songs that go to A and I was having to push notes up an octave and it was kinda messing with the flow of things.
But yeah ,simple trick awesome results. I don't hear many real 7 strings sound that clean.
Another example of Electri6ity magic

It still needs a little work before the vox go on but it's close.
And I'm not trying to "whore" tracks on this thread but another song that use Electri6ity with vox [second half of the song].

Can someone tell me how to defeat the auto alternate picking please.
Lets say I want a basic low e chug going 1 + 2 + 3 e + a 4 +
Now I want that all downstrokes except the e and a notes. How would I do that? I've tried adjusting the pick and strum timings in settings, that doesn't seem to do anything. Something is overriding it.
And if I use the keyswitch keys to try and force down and up strums that doesn't work. Still being overridden by some setting.
The only way I can get it to not alternate is to change the pick direction slider in the performance page from alternate to up or down, but then it does all downstrums or upstrums only.
Help me! I need to find a way to tell it to downpick or uppick when I want, or at least make it to where it has to be playing a lot faster before it automatically does it. Right now regardless of where the setting is at in the strum/pick settings pages, it seems to always alternate up and down regardless of tempo/speed.
Also wondering, when you guys are writing fast rock/metal stuff, do you record the midi using a keyboard "live" style or do you use your mouse and piano roll view? I usually do piano roll but with electri6ity I've noticed you have to adjust a lot for the AMT and VMT if you don't record "live".
Thanks!

Hi ToddKc,
I strongly recommend to read the manual. I know this what most guys don't want to hear, but it's really important to understand how Electri6ity works. Especially read the chapter where all the settings on the 'Settings' page are explained.
But I'm trying to help you, too, of course:
That's why you need to assign or use the default CC to modualte the direction slider when needed. Click on 'Setup' on the performance page. Click in the 'Pick Direction' tab. Use the default CC# or enter a new CC#Do the same for the strum direction.
Per default you can change the strum direction with CC#24 and the pick direction with CC#25.
So you could for example use 'downstroke', which will be alternate if you play fast (via the 'Auto Force Alteration' setting). If you need a upstroke at a certain positing, you need to use the CC# (see above) to manually set the direction to upstroke.
I know this isn't the easiest way, but as I said: Electri6ity can't know how you want to play a note. You need to tell it.

But I'm trying to help you, too, of course:
Go to the 'Settings' tab. You'll find two sections: 'Picking' and 'Strumming'. In both you'll find a setting called 'Auto Force Alteration'. Set this to as low as possible. It's a time threshold. If you play faster than that settings, the notes will be played with alternate picking even if the picking direction is set to downstroke or upstroke. Same is true for strumming. And if I use the keyswitch keys to try and force down and up strums that doesn't work. Still being overridden by some setting.
Well, that's what this setting is for. Electri6ity can't know how you want to play a note (down- or upstroke). So you need to tell the engine. The only way I can get it to not alternate is to change the pick direction slider in the performance page from alternate to up or down, but then it does all downstrums or upstrums only.

Just so we are clear, I'm not stupid enought to think the program can read my mind, I understand that I have to tell it what to do.I know this isn't the easiest way, but as I said: Electri6ity can't know how you want to play a note. You need to tell it.
And yes, I've read the entire manual. However, in my experience the settings relating to picking direction do not do what they are supposed to. I of course realize that this is something I am doing wrong, so I posted this thread.
I think your suggestion about using cc changes is what I need to do, so thanks for pointing that out to me. I will give it a try. Thanks!

Hi ToddKC,
I didn't mean to offend you. My comment about you having to tell Electri6ity what to do was more more meant as an excuse for the fact, that it unfortunately necessary to do those extra steps.

ToddKc:
Electri6ity can be confusing and frustrating to no end. But its well worth it if you have the patience. And yes I agree with manual isn't as helpful as it could be. The problem is that while it describes a lot, how to use it properly isn't in there. That and Electri6ity seems to be made for a keyboardist. Personally I'm a guitarist that uses a piano roll to imput everything. I use my computer keyboard to test keyswitches.
I suggest looping the said area and testing the settings out while it's playing and you can see both what Electri6ity is doing and your piano roll. This seems to produce the quickest results for me.
However it took me about 4 months to get used to Electri6ity and took me a straight 8 hours of tweaking to get it to sound exactly how I wanted.
for heavy palm muting "chucka's" I assume your trying to go for an almost all "downstroke" feel to emulate a real guitar player. Usually when I do this I make the keyswitch extend over everything instead of creating multipal keystrokes to match the notes. This seems to work better for me, but it could be due to a changed setting.
I suggest going back a few pages and download progtronic's and My presets. You may not like them but we may have settings in their that match what your trying to do and may help you figure out the settings faster. His are a strat and a lipstick LP for death metal and mine is ment more for newer metal and is based off of the Les Paul DI.
In about a week or so I'm going to start posting Electri6ity tutorials on Youtube that will actually show keystroke work, and will have downloadable midi files to match. When I start posting them I'll post it in here. 90% of what I'll be posting will relate to metal only anyway.
Good Luck.
Oh and Ben, I'm sure you get a lot of heat due to how difficult Electri6ity is to use. But as more and more info and such get out it should be better. Not to mention I see Electri6ity to be the start. WIth the right feedback and updates it could dominate the market for many years to come.
Is Vir2 ever going to have an open forum for suggestions on the next update? Myself and a few others have some idea's for you guys.
