Dead Can Dance
Red House Painters
50 Foot Wave

All released albums on the 4AD label?

Post

OK, now mine.

Harry Nilsson and Rock 'N' Roll tragedy times 3. Explain (without consulting Wikipedia).

For those of you who don't already know this, you should find it pretty amazing.

Yep, that's it.

My turn then? Here's a quick one while we wait for a Nilsson expert to show up. (A.M. Gold - are you referring to Nilsson's Flat of Death?)

Which five songs am I describing here? They are all quite well known and share a connection:

1. Low-level employee endures continual workplace harassment, receives promotion, is suddenly fawned upon by his fellow employees.

2. In which we draw increasingly weird parallels between a toxic plant and the birth of a child.

3. Man drags servant out into snow on bitterly cold night. Servant complains, is told to suck it up. (Man later murdered by own brother.)

4. These mysterious boats arouse my curiosity. I'm told they're headed for a landlocked city in the Middle East, which just raises more questions.

5. I have convinced myself that the most significant problems in my life are dental.

^Yea, you got it. Nilsson was very good friends with John Lennon, plus both Mama Cass and Keith Moon died in his apartment in London. Needless to say, he sold the apartment after that.

(Checks to see that it's the last page of the thread...yep!)

My guesses would be:

1. Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer
2. The Holly And The Ivy
3. Good King Wenceslas
4. I Saw Three Ships
5. All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth

Connection: um, Easter?

:tu:

Christmas songs are generally quite odd.

Another experiment: this one's based on the 'connecting wall' bit of the BBC4 quiz show, "Only Connect". If you haven't seen it, you're in luck, because you can play some example games online.

Basically, there are four groups of four answers; each group has a connection. You get 1 point for each correct group, and 1 point for the correct connection for that group. If you happen to find a group or connection that I hadn't thought of...tough. :hihi:

Feel free to post guesses for individual groups if you wish, and I'll award points, but bear in mind that, if you're right, you'll be making it easier for someone else to work out the remaining connections. If there's a draw, whoever gets the most points first wins.

RED - ROCKET - SPACEMAN - UP
REVEAL - SOUL - PURPLE - STARCHILD
KENTUCKY - RIVER - CAT - MONSTER
IRON - DEMON - GREEN - NOVEMBER

Let the experiment begin! I'll be back back in about 12 hours to assess the results....

Ha! The experiment worked! 8)

(Note to self: must use more obscure ingredients next time.)

All correct, that's 8 points plus an extra 2 for completing the whole thing - back to you, Barnadine!

Indeed! So I'm going to blatantly steal one of your earlier experiments. :)

The lyrics of four songs fed into wordle to make pretty patterns. The larger the word the more often it occurs. Words in song title not included. Try to resist the urge to google.

thought I knew #4, but maybe not. Lots of common words if not, have to check the lyric sheet. One of my faves too, memory like a...?

Ditto. 1 - 3 came to me instantly. I'm assuming that the link between the first 3 applies to the 4th too.

Must be a song I don't know.
