Ok verizon wise, what is THE BEST droid I can get? I think its either the samsung fascination or droid x... I'm leaning towards droid X... I've been googling it a lot and haven't really read anything good, and I trust the technical cool dudes in here to guide me. Mostly I'm looking for killer awesome nav, podcasts (I think doggcatcher looks to be the best) and whatever the hell else they've got for me... So yeah, I'm going to make the switch a few days after my bday. So what's it gonna be guys? Cya blackberry tour!

While I'm on the topic, are there cool audio apps on it?

Thx so muchly

Hahaah awesome. Surprised no one is chiming in!!

why don't you just get an iPhone?

...there. That ought to fire up your thread a little bit more. You're welcome ;)

The HTC looks really nice and is now 4g.

I have a android tablet and am beginning to discover what it can do. It's the Viewsonic Gtablet and it is insanely fast and powerful with a 10.2" screen.

My HTC Legend just got the Android 2.2 update which improves the Android experience substantially. In terms of [audio]apps, however, Android is still pants compared to iOS.

Yeah, audio apps just kinda suck on Android for the time being. Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is coming out soon and it has support for low-latency audio so maybe things will get better. Unfortunately my HTC Hero is never getting 2.3 (not even 2.2) through official channels.

Android has some really, really solid hardware out there these days. The Droid X and Samsung Galaxy S phones are beautiful. The problem is that compared to iOS, the apps just suck, including those for audio. That's not Android's fault, of course. It's just that the good app developers haven't yet made their way over to Android yet.

Of course, with 30,000 activations a day, I'm sure that'll change.

Ive just got LG 540 - Android for £100 - fab piece of kit. I updated to 2.1. The audio apps are great fun. Thats what its all about - even the iphone isnt meant to be taken seriously, it cant export from apps. Google dont dictate what u can and cant have on it either.

Several folks in my office just got the Fascination and love it. None of them are musicians however.

I was going to get it myself, and there seems to be a ton of music apps out there (at least according to CM).

In the end I did not get it. Being the low man on the phone totem pole in my house (two teenagers and my wife are ahead of me), I settled for my wife's iPhone 3 hand-me-down when she got the new iPhone 4. Free will sometimes trump 'better' as it did in this case. But the lack of Flash would have otherwise been a dealbreaker for me.

Plus, it is my understanding that Droid now outsells all the other OS's (including iPhone) which probably means that app development will soon catch up.

So many plugins, so little time...

Ron, I have an HTC Incredible for my Android development phone for work, and it's tits. Love it. Music apps aren't the reason to get a droid, unfortunately that much is true. But if I were doing it again, I'd go for a droid and skip the iPhone. Google is stepping up the Android marketplace (I don't think it will be as good as AppStore ever because of the freedom), and I think more developers will be hopping on the Android OS platform as the market share continues to climb. Also, it's ass-loads easier to build, test, and deploy to marketplace an Android app than an iOS one. As more and more Android based devices surface (for example the B&N ColorNook that I bought my wife for Christmas is an extremely affordable Android tablet) the decision to develop on Android platform is going to become no-brainer for the developers just for sheer numbers alone.

You can't really go wrong with a droid smart phone. I'd say if you can swing the price, the EVO 4G is the one I'd look at.

Good luck!

3GS here BERFAB, and I wont be getting a new V4 me thinks. I'm one of the lucky guys who has an iPad as well, and music apps on that are awesome. I think the only thing I'd miss from my 3GS if I migrated 100% to my HTC for work would be Netflix and NanoStudio :)

BTW Ron: http://the-palm-sound.blogspot.com/ good stuff there. Though now rekkerd.org and even KVR are supporting smartphone news, I find palmsound to be pretty good source for new mobile music news.

Honestly, if I were to get another Android phone, it would be whatever Nexus phone is available at that point. It's the only line of Android phones that won't come with all the unnecessary bullshit that Motorola, HTC, etc. insist upon putting on the phones, and it's the only line that will get the Android updates in a timely fashion.

Has the Galaxy S series even gotten 2.2 yet? 2.3 is out now. It's this fragmentation that's going to hurt Android long-term. The developer for Angry Birds said how difficult it is coding for all these different phones, and that's just a game. Imagine trying to deal with complex audio applications.

For me, the "vanilla" install of Android on my Droid is still the best version of Android.
