How to make that sound...

I love breakbot, but I can't dissect his music! Its so gritty and some of it sounds so lo-fi. His basses are all very simple, but beautifully processed and they come out nicely in the mix...

Any suggestions?

he's nearly entirely samples man, cut up disco, funk, R&B and retro 80s. his stuff sounds lofi because it is! :)

well on that note, are there any good sample cd's that have strictly old sampled disco drum hits?

loopmasters has one but i'm sure he has an entire HD of disco tracks, if that's the sound you want then you need to source your material where he is getting his. have fun

you're talking about two decades worth of music. does everyone want everything handed to them on a silver platter?

allcentury: search for vintage breaks sample cds on Ebay or something. The 300 best breaks cd is amazing. Apparently someone is presenting this stuff on a silver platter.

apples and oranges man, you're talking sample cd's, i'm talking actual recordings.

i answered your question with exactly how to get the breakbot sound, thread should have ended there.

These are high quality drum breaks from 70s disco and funk records. Take a look. Goodnight.

I think he just samples himself. He plays regular VSTs, then bounces them to audio, then chops them up. Any thoughts?

my thoughts are that certain people ask questions on KVR but theyve already decided what the answer is and then they ignore everyone who suggests otherwise.

UltraJv, notice that this topic was started several months ago. I analyzed the music a bit more since then, and I've learned a lot since then as well. So, i thought I would share my understanding since I first started this thread.

Be constructive.

Heres how one track was made with samples by Liam Howlett - its a skill to do this. Its hard to guess what samples were used without knowing as they have been masterfully altered :

I know for a fact that Breakbot doesn't sample other tracks. He is a musician first and plays the music, but then "samples himself" as if it were another song. He chops up his own chord progressions and basslines, which makes it sound really gritty:

Here's a new track of his to be released soon. I think it demonstrates this:
