Cheers for the votes folks
... and v'ger, .. congrats!!!! enjoy the pat leave, enjoy the break, the beach, and your new addition to the family
... having kids is is where you really discover the difference between production and post-production
Anyway, I'm ready now ... 6 listens on, and comments updated from notes of first impressions to 'what's - what' ... here we go .......
Sticky Sticklestone - Nice beefy sounds - tense, yet spacious and organic. Well produced with a gutsy bass, I can imagine many roles for this track in view of it's urgency and robustness.... Sticks and stones alright! .. and enough to break bones!
Midnight Runaway - Familiar, almost 'clubby' sound over all, nice developments and changes half way through ... quite infectious track. Production is good, strong sounds and snappy percs, but overall, limited in range .. but good use of dynamics, space and stereo field.
Impossible To Miss - Good quality, interesting, edgy sounds - cant help singing 'I'm coming up - so you better get the party started' ....
... ( sorry, there's more range in melody in this track than to be deserving of that comment ). Well produced, nice composition, cool rhythms, pleasant pace, good range of textures, yeah, it sells the synth beautifully.
Interoperable Times - Simple, but kinda dramatic opening, and then the addition of two more sounds takes it ... errr, somewhere else? Like in the corridor adjoining the studio where a more obscure Tom waits Album has just been recorded, and the mics still on? There's something appealing and 'real' in the 'fizz' on some of the sounds, and in there is what sounds like a 'real' guitar ... I dont know if the sounds can be commonly agreed as 'quality', but very appealing. Production gives a sensation of a 'real' space, and every listen to this one reveals another wee trick or twist. if this band came to town, I would def go and check them out
Fractured Planet - Someone's nicked Mr Blitz's toybox!
This is cool. Varied combinations of good sounds, combined with sensible dropping of sounds to emphasise others, often to the point of monophony ( as opposed to monotony ) - resulting in a dynamic range which leaves the listener with a feeling of uncertainty ... and therefore the need to hang on to every note.
All in all, a well produced, beautiful composition full of highs, lows and in betweens ... not necessarily in that order.
My Pet Necronom - Nice build up ( great woody bass ) ... then this one opens up with a lot of promise with the addition of another bass stab ( similar to an orchestral 'hit' ), some string and a tickly arp ... and then ? If this is the trailer, I def wanna see the movie.... gimme a shout when it's out
Cant Stop the Rain - Ahhh creamy textures and fat plops ... very nice, great quality, interesting, voluptuous sounds with an agenda. A well produced lovely melodic composition, excellent dynamics with a good mix of pump and flow.
Tiring Years - Lovely atmospheric start in the glistening cave with bats, birds, insects, glass and water .... then a collection of quality, stately sounds, still retaining that large vibrant space illustrate the power of the wind under said creatures' wings - flapping, throbbing and gliding sympathetically. Follow up with a dreamy downtime section to take breath before another arial adventure, and we have a track which may be more than 10 mins, but still ends too soon! Bang on re production and composition. Beautiful track, with quality sounds. Personally, as a piece of music, by far my favourite track - but in terms of stretching the synth, I would like to have heard a range of sounds in proportion to the length of the track.
Outro - Immediately, the character of the sounds have just met having come from different 'planets' .... and then the more refined, reserved sounds find their aperatifs have been spiked!
A bit short, I was rather entertained by the illusion that I was nodding in agreement with the dominant sound, but sneakily curiously bending my ear to hear the scandalous conversation between the quieter sounds. Its very difficult to judge Mr Blitz tracks on a level playing field ... blind listening is no good either because Mr blitz may hide, but eventually he shouts ... BOO! -- Guess WHO? ... This track, like all other Mr B tracks represents what I love about OSC .... the 'have a go' spirit is still there after so many offerings, the development of production and technique can be mapped, and yet, there is something so personal and uncompromising that it stands above the character, features and limitations of any synth. More often than not, this does not attract points - and yet, Mr B deserves points for not asking for them, and making it clear that a synths capabilities are no substitute for human personality ... no matter how deranged
... ( not sure if i'm gonna give any though
)
Revelations - This has been one of my faves from the off ... very pleasant, strong yet subdued until it needs to hammer home. The EQ of some sounds seems a little strange - until they all come together ... which in a big way adds to the strength of the track. Altogether, a cool composition - somewhat formal in construction, but with an excellent range of sounds, space, and feel. Well produced .... ( I have to stop using this phrase ... it has become the norm in OSC ... and so a bit meaningless ) ... and a good range of 'draw in' and 'kick out' ... for want of a better way to describe the dynamics and tonal shifts.
Sublimation - Atmospheric track - have to say this has pulled up a different set of moods every time I've listened, but on the whole usually hiding in a dusty hole having things thrown or fired at me figures strongly. 4 distinct and effective sounds. Production is good, but composition seems a bit random despite it's abilty to entertain me. I can think of loads of scenarios where this track, or part of would be effective, but I'm not sure the sounds distinguish the synth.
Love Divine - Excellent, interesting build up....OK, I expect a punch, but quite satisfied with a pat on the head ... production good, not so sure about the mix ... but, I'm gonna use the same adjective again within a short time of using it last ... INTERESTING composition in the second half of the track which ( seriously - no offence ) sounds like two unrelated pieces, having been forcefully disembowelled, put in the same comfy room and encouraged to somehow creatively compensate for what they are missing .... and you know what? they succeed!
Anyway, I'm ready now ... 6 listens on, and comments updated from notes of first impressions to 'what's - what' ... here we go .......

Ok, and so the difficult bit ... hmmm
OK, the difficulty is all about what has been said before. In the past I've described comps as 'fantastic', brilliant', 'amazing' etc .... and the difficulty is when a comp comes around that is a wee bit less impressive ( and have to decide if 'damned decent' is not an insult ) or when a synth, and a collection like in this comp happens ....
Words like 'best' are impressive until 'better' comes along ... but for now, for me, GTG NR 2010 is the best synth we have used in a OSC! I dont know if this comp gives an idea of the scope of the synth, but of the quality and character, no probs.
.... wacky idea I know, but could we do this one again? ..... OK, stop throwing things at me FFS!
And so ....
Cant Stop The Rain - Mick Rippon ... 5 ... not particularly for range ( my usual criteria ) but for quality and use of sounds ... if you sell a tin of baked beans, it is the consistency, not the variety which is important ... and not whats in the sauce! ... Solid track.
Interoperable Times - dwsel .... 4 ... cos if I didn't know this was one synth, I would really want to know where this was done, and who and what was in there!
Revelations From The Age Of Enlightenment - Mike 777 ... 3 ... almost for the opposite reason re. dwsel's track ... I was never sure where I was .... until I was in the middle of everywhere!
Tiring Years - Mac of BIOnight ... 2 ... forget old pals act, forget principals and voting criteria, everything goes out of the window sometimes ...just an fkn excellent track ... maybe sells the synth in a way which would convince many others to buy it if not myself, but as a track ... superb.
Impossible To Miss - Yeager .... 1 ... re. above, maybe a bit wrong to have this track this lowly, by my usual criteria alone, Yeager would be way higher ... but maybe here is the indicator of the quality in this comp. Yeager, just one little daring twist/skip/twirl across half an octave with one sound, at the right moment, with the musical equivalent of an exclamation mark to follow, .... and the 5 points would have been yours
.. it really is that close!

Hi guys - here are my votes and comments. I am actually quite harsh in some of my assessments, which I feel bad about, but I feel there's no point unless you're getting my raw thoughts!
Sticky Stickeston (Gegech)
Strong atmoshere. Some nice dynamics at times. Nice subtle work. A bit of mud in the mixing. Musically a bit discord and lacking in shape and attention to detail in a musical way. However I appreciated the atmospheric work though, which ultimately what this piece is all about.
Midnight Runaway (Archon1024) --- 2 points
Groovy bassline. Nice and mellow. Oodles of x-factor and personality about this tune. The melodic hook was ok to good. The harmony (to my ears) had legitimate mistakes in places. I'm going to be frank and say you fall a little short musically, HOWEVER the tune had a great personality which matters more in the end. The ability to inject personality into music trumps the craft of musicality. Keep working at it!
Impossible to Miss (Yeager) --- 5 points
This has a certain timeless feel about it. I absolutely love the main theme. I also love the change to the major key. Instrumentation is great (although the arps could be a LITTLE less busy) - I like the phat of the lead. Musicality is great. As far a well rounded and accessible tune perfect for a compo such as this, the general structure is right on the money.
Interoperable Times (dwsel)
Interesting play between the percussion track and the melody. I'm not a fan of the bassline sound to be honest, although I can see how the sound used is relevant to what you were trying to achieve. A bit of a tragic lonely vibe; very dry. Kudos for creating such a unique sound.
Fractured Planet (mike777) --- 1 point
Very relaxing. It's currently 1:50am, I'm sitting in the near dark listening to this with headphones. I nearly fell asleep listening to this. Now, I'm sitting here, wondering if falling asleep is a good or bad thing. It's very musical. Key changes are robust. Dynamics are good. Did you run through through some analogue gear or something? Overall, musically great. Lovely warm sound - perhaps your mastering process had something to do with that? You really brought out what I think the VST was about!
My Pet Necronom (DramaNoMore)
I'll try to be nice (as I can) about this. This is unfortunately not very inspired, nor any sense of musical ambition, nor do I get the feeling this tune was nurtured with love. Overall, disappointing. I'm sorry if I sound mean
Tiring Years (Mac of BioNight) --- 4 points
Wow. 10 minutes long. You can tell a bit of work went into this. I honestly do think the tune is too long for a compo! I enjoyed the 2nd half a lot more than the 1st half - so I'll comment on that. The high registers sounded beautiful. Nearly hypnotic. That idea alone was inspired and beautiful. Well done.
Outtro (mrblitz000)
Very minimalist. And musically, I really can't relate to it at all - seems very messy and I had trouble 'feeling the love'. Did you use any Renoise VST automation on this? What I noticed is your 'attack' from all the notes sounded the same - after a while I become transfixed on the beginning of every note! Some strategic use of automation can prevent this phenomenon from happening.
Revelations From The Age of Enlightenment (Mike777) -- 3 points
Another piece from Mike777. Seems like a bit of a rhapsody of ideas, although you do recap which does give it some structural glue. Lovely 'optimistic' feel. Very direct, very enjoyable. Technically very robust . Plenty of ideas, plenty of brain food. I wished you developed the idea at 1:02 a little more.
BigHorny (tattiemannie)
Big fanfare sound from Tattie. Big sound overall, maybe too big as I can hear some ridiculous use of compression. Very hyperactive. I have visions of a fat chick on E belly dancing. Lots of charisma and wobbly at the same time. I love how your little motif/theme comes back in to say hello from time to time. This was messy but enjoyable.
New Kids On The Block (Sublimation)
Had a sense of foreboding doom and pathos. That descending instrument sound started to get annoying though. The atmosphere is ok. Although it all felt a bit random, padded and rushed at times. I didn't feel the love on this, I'm sorry
Love Divine (Vanmorrison)
I can hear what you're trying to do here, it just needs refining. The musical ideas are there, the execution just needed work. The bass instrument is not loud enough, which is a shame for such a bass driven tune. There is so much unwanted complexity, whereas I think your time would have been better spent identifying the important musical parts and getting them right first - keeping them simple, and to the point.

Tattie, thanks for the vote and especially for the comments!
Mickrip, thanks for the vote! I'd love to hear what you think about the first part as well, the one you say it's weaker, but... after the comp is over (I wouldn't want you to convince anbody
) Some things are intentional choices, but sometimes you can see flaws through other people's eyes that you wouldn't have seen otherwise, so it'd be interesting

Late as ever, but here are some of my thoughts ;
Bighorny - Tattiemannie : Walter Carlos, Great arrangement, nice full production, great melodies.
Fractured Planet - Mike777 : Classical approach, good sounddesign, Love the fluty theme.
Interoperable Times - Dwsel : Great drums(sounds), lovely bendy bass. Reminds me of Japan (the band). I can imagine David Sylvian singing over this.
Love Divine - Vanmorrison : Some great musical ideas, sounds are also nice esp. the shaker ,I (almost) got what you were aiming for, feels a bit unquantized.
TIRING_YEARS - Mac_of_BIOnighT : Well done Mac, Great atmospherics in the beginning, and that bass in the beginning is SPOT ON ! soundwise and otherwise. TD will be proud. Strings are great, the change at 4.00 is kind of abrupt, nice pitchbendy/legato, part three starts very nice, very Tangrammy
Can't Stop the Rain - mickrippon : Great lead melodie , the second voicing is very nice. Nice steady pulsing bass, great track overall.
Midnight Runaway - Archon1024 : Nice steady drums, good sounds, melodic, good arrangement and
production.
My Pet Necronom - Dramanomore : I love what you did (sofar) in this, the arp/bass is a great start, the reverby snare and the low timpany are beatifull, but.. just when I hoped it starts...it ends. It made me want to build on this and make it into a COMPLETE track. Please do !.
Outro___mrblitz000 : Some nice melodies hiding in here, the fluty sound is quite nice.
Revelations From The Age Of Enlightenment - Mike777 : Almost classical, nice melodies, good sounds, Wendy Carlos, lovely arps.
Stickly Stickleston - Gegech : Lots going on immediately, pulsing/rhytme, atmospheric more than melodic. Great production and sounddesign.
Sublimation - NewKidsOnTheBlock : Droning, soundscapy, some good sounds in there.
As for the points:
TIRING_YEARS - Mac_of_BIOnighT : 5 points

As always a nice variety of tracks to listen to, and enjoy.
