Since I had to switch to a new Quadcore PC with Win7 64bit:
Does Cubase SX3 work on this platform ?

I answered it myself: No

Installer from install disk quits after a few seconds.
It seems I must get the Cubase5 upgrade for 200 €.

i'm currently in this boat.

it's not officially supported on the Steinberg website. Cubase SX3 does work on Windows 7 64bit but i'm finding that many older plug-ins are not working (especially older plugins created in SynthEdit).

Oh BTW, did you try installing as an Administrator? I think that's what I had to do to get it to install.

Yeah; And the timing couldn't be worse for me. I already have to pick up a new MIDI interface since the Steinberg Midex 3 was discontinued (no drivers).

I'm in the SX3 Zone. I'm going to be trying out a lot of demos over the next few months before I decide if I'm going to continue down the Steinberg Yellow Brick Road.

What are your thoughts PeterL?

1) Hmmm, I must check for Administrator rights, but I think I have them because I just have one user account after installation of Win7 64 (which should own all rights)....will check tonight.
Maybe my install disk has finger prints or scratches on it (will check also).
2) I will probably do the upgrade to Cubase5 (although in next year, because money has gone elsewhere this year). Cubase SX3 was always stable for my recording and mixing work, but I heard mostly good things about Cubase5, so let's see....

The default user account in Vista and W7 is a limited privileges one.

from any account you can just right-click on the install and choose "Run as Administrator" (as long as you know the password, if you even have one).

It's a security meassure very convenient if you surf the web from that account. Check CC4's advice if that's the case.

I must admit that I would not have spent as much money as I did on SX3 if I had realised that it had such a short lifespan. I was kind of deluded in thinking that software would last forever. Well I guess it does, but the hardware it relies on doesn't!

I suspect when my current hardware expires I shall be looking at an open source alternative because I cannot afford to keep re-purchashing the same piece of expensive software over and over. SX3 does everything I need so Cubase 5 is pretty much an irrelevance to me.

Guys, I had success on installing

The problem was following:
I have previously installed the new WaveLab7 and the new installed eLCC prohibits the installation of the old LicenseControlCenter, so the whole SX3 installer exits.
What works: uninstall new eLCC -> install old LCC and SX3 from installer disk -> install new eLCC again.
BTW, running installer in administrator mode didn't help.
I'm happy now (Cubase5 can wait) !
