beardedone: this had my head bobbing diagonally and in infinity signs ... this jazz has a rare combination of being angular or disjointed while still being nice to listen to ... did you ever get a midi keyboard, or are you still placing notes with a mouse? if the latter, that's kind of mindblowing

Hey Havran! Sorry I missed your review. I spent yesterday in extremis guitaris deciding which Larivee acoustic electric to buy. Thanks for the kind words. I am glad you like the angular groove (oxymoron?) which was one of my main goals with this track. Yes I am still placing notes with a mouse. I have a keyboard but my keyboard chops are restricted to bass lines and the odd beat set. I use Slicy drummer and Fillin drummer a great deal though not always exclusively. The drums here are half MusicLab drummers in Dr008 and half mouse programed using Sonic Reality kits in ST2. The keyboard "melody" and bass parts are mouse programed and then tweaked using Fruity's harmony tricks. The chords were all mouse-programmed by and writing them to the piano roll. I have been doing this a long time now so it ain't too tedious.

Really gld you like this track!

I don't do much thinking yet about "production". This one uses Ambience, VintageWarmer, and Apple's multiband compressor, all more or less slapped on the output bus

No, that's pretty much all in the original samples: they have enough dirt on them already to make them personable!

Possibly a little of the "wholeness" of it comes from the RV7000 reverb from 2.5: great little unit.

The chords are beautiful. And i really like the middle part when everything goes up and up. This tune should be extended and complexified with some solo instrument playing above.

Yeah, it was sort of a shame to leave it completely without counterpoint or any more interesting small ensemble techniques, but the point was sort of to make an MFX system where I could do this stuff real-time such as to be able to score films quickly by improvising to what I was watching!

Moreover, this system also allows me to switch between articulations on the fly; I had a whole detache sample set loaded that I never used, as I found 2 minutes too short to evolve into it naturally.

I imagine I'll revisit this someday. And while I enjoy working with Fitch's super-characteristic samples, I'm teetering on the brink of purchasing Garritan Personal Orchestra so that I can try bigger works!

Ola Markleford, that cello piece was really nice, I look forward to the long version with violins and flutes, etc!

So why GPO? Have you heard great things? I'm teetering on the edge of buying HALion String Edition, but if I'm going to buy an orchestra, I want it to be the best! Thanks...

In that case there are some products that cost 10 times as much as GPO that you're absolutely going to love.

GPO is a nice product. I did my entry this month with it. However, Kompakt (or Kontakt, whichever sampler it uses) is a floating piece of turd. On the Mac at least. And in Logic there are some complications that I still don't know how to deal with.

The sounds are good, though.
