Like the title says - which multitrack recorder apps do you reckon are great? And why?
Is it features? ease of use? on-board editing capabilities? Sound quality? etc etc etc.
Thanks!

I don't think any of them are great... but I've tried a lot of 'em and so far, my favorites are Multitrack DAW and StudioTrack, though they are very very different.
Multitrack DAW is very similar to a desktop DAW, in that tracks are represented vertically along the left and the clips are displayed horizontally. The basic version has eight tracks (mono or stereo), but you can bump it to twenty-four with an in-app purchase. There are few frills: no effects, no EQ, not even a fade function. I achieve all of these by copying tracks to other apps such as Twisted Wave or Nanastudio to add effects or processing. According to the developer, all of these functions are coming in the future. Still, even as it is, it'll get the job done and with more tracks than anything else.
StudioTrack, on the other hand only provides eight-tracks (all mono) and is set up a little like a portastudio, with tracks represented as vertical mixer strips. Though editing is far more limited than MT DAW, StudioTrack provides effects and EQ. For basic "all-in-one" recordings, this is a good bet.
There are also a few four-tracks. I have tried GigBaby, StudioMiniXL and GigDaddy. The latter is the best of the three, on the strength of its effects suite as an in-app purchase option (I think it was only a buck or two). There's also the Tascam Portastudio, but I haven't tried that one yet. All of these are very much patterned after four-trackers, with simple controls and little editing.
It's still early days for this stuff... the apps aren't as sophisticated as they could be. They are adequate for basic portable tracking. For now it takes a lot of copying and pasting to do a full production on the iPad, but it can be done.

If you also want best-in-class guitar sounds on iPad too, and a recorder that's great on its own on top of that give our AmpliTube a try. Recording video:

I would say multitrack daw.
It has audio copy paste and that is important, amplitube has no audio copy paste
Making it a standalone app.

Agreed about MultitrackDaw, really nice smooth interface and COPY AND PASTE.
I would'nt buy any ipad app that did not support copy and paste. In fact it's lame not to implement it !!

What makes it worse is Sonoma worked hard on building a standard copy
Paste sdk and even made it free.
Yet still developers ( mainly big companies) ignore it.

Bizzare indeed.
Also ignored is Beatmaker pasteboard.
The Nlog synth i use on the ipad can write to both Sonama and Beatmaker so i can load wicked synth sounds into Multrackdaw..
Would be nice to hear a comment on why bigger companies dont use this, Peter ?

I don't make those decisions, I have no idea - the decisions are made amongst MANY features that can be added in and based on many factors. I suppose this isn't dissimilar as to why only a VERY spare few of the apps I have support CoreMIDI? That's free and has been available since the latest iOS (which is available early for developers to work with). I can't say it wouldn't be considered in the future though. For now, import and export works, and the advantage is also having better effects (especially guitar-related) than the rest too.

MultitrackDaw it is then! I'm not concerned about the lack of onboard effects etc - my intention is to use this as a mobile device, and then export all the tracks to Record/Reason for post production and adding synths, drum tracks, etc.
For my needs I think the basic version with 8 Stereo tracks is plenty, but an upgrade is cheap enough if I find I'm wrong.
Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!

I'm sure if anyone can let your bosses know it's you?
You are the only employee that seems to frequent forums so surely you can return users comments.
Sonoama audiocopy paste is essential for any true mobile app as it the only way to not have to take your mobile unit to a desktop computer.
Also although the vintage recorder is a nice idea and I'm sure will appeal to some a simple modern track based recorder would of been much more useful, I am assuming amplitubes recorder emulates an old style record with no editing options?

Only one that posts, who says I don't forward requests (and every other channel we have that receives feature requests does). I stated I don't make the decision to include features, and even if requests are made there's no guarantee they'll be implemented right away if at all. There's many thousands of users of the iOS apps we make (being that we've been the top-selling guitar gear app in the App Store for most of the over 200 days since release) and all are considered. Would audio copy/paste be a bad thing? Well, of course not. There are many factors that go into decisions about new features and like I said I don't make those decisions.topaz wrote:I'm sure if anyone can let your bosses know it's you?

Thanks for commenting Peter.
I would buy the Amplitude like a shot if i could directly copy sounds created on the ipad into it. Not really making a stance here against IK but i decided a month ago to stop buying music apps that dont support copy/paste and make some comments about it on public forum.
I really have far to much useless ipad stuff here that i could have brough a decent VST with.
Imagine if someone forgot to invent the Windows clipboard all those years ago.
It's laugabale in 2011.
Thank's for reading , happy new year.
ETA it's actually laughable there is no file system to view then the problem of copy/paste would gone.

Speaking just as me and not IK, I agree with the file system thing too! It would make things so much better just to have access to the files. I know I dig around in my Cubase audio files on my computer and would love to do so on my iPad.
