You'd think by now Apple would have fixed the number 1 most serious bug that affects iPhone users. This is the 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 1612, 1639, 2009, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3015, 9807, error message bug covered (but not fixed) here:

It's just happened to me again while updating to 4.2. Every single time I have tried to update the OS on my iPhone it has been left bricked by the process breaking down midway and having to restore my iPhone from scratch - then go through the tedious process of restoring all my backups and media and then finally waiting for it to be reactivated by O2. I've tried using alternative computers, new leads, different USB ports, turning off all firewalls - nothing has worked except this:
* While the iPhone is in DFU (black screen mode) go to task manager

(ctl+alt+del on your keyboard).
* in task manager go to the 'processes' tab
* look down the list and find itunes.exe and right click on it and

select 'end process'
* itunes should now close
* note iPhone should still be connected during this and have the

black screen still
* restart iTunes and it will recognise the iphone and ask to

restore the iPhone
* follow through by clicking on restore iPhone
* it will extract the software again yet this time the firmware

update should go through

to force into dfu mode

1 turn off
2 insert usb cable while holding home button
but all it enables me to do is restore the phone - it doesn't stop the problem occurring in the first place. Anyone else had this and found a better solution?

i tried updating my 3gs, but it wouldn't even back up my apps without giving an error message .. consequently i'm staying where i am on V3.1.3
Bit of a pity as a lot of the cool new apps coming out wont run on it.
I don't really need the stress of trying to update succesfully tho!
(I cant believe it's such problematic process for so many people just to update- seems like apple are a bit screwy in some ways)

I think part of the problem is that it not only requires you to have an internet connection open during the update process which in itself is stupid - it also has some very absurd and finicky requirements regarding the nature of that access:
During the update and restore process, iTunes needs to contact Apple. Ensure that your computer has the following ports open and can access these servers:

* Port 80
* Port 443
* phobos.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com

Note that whenever your software is communicating with a secure connection over the Internet, it is critical that your computer's date and time are correct.

If you see "Error 9807", you must open access to the following VeriSign servers:

* evintl-ocsp.verisign.com
* evsecure-ocsp.verisign.com

To learn how to open your network to access the VeriSign servers, refer to your router, firewall, or security software documentation.

If you are using a Windows operating system, you can follow this article to help resolve issues caused by third-party security software.

You may need to update, properly configure, disable, or uninstall built-in firewalls and other security software to prevent interference with iTunes. For assistance with this, contact the company that supports the firewall or security software you use. If you are using proxy settings, try to restore or update without using a proxy.
I have tried turning off my router firewall but that doesn't fix it - I have no idea how you would even find out if those "ports" are open (I don't even know what a "port" is) but it's crazy to make the process dependent on such things or to require people to take down essential security systems just so they can update their iPhones.

I kept bricking mine on the update from my desktop that was authorized, until I finally used the desktop to back up went to my laptop which is not authorized to do the update then take it to the desktop to restore my contacts, music etc.

Funny thing, both are on the same home network and no firewalls etc and the iphone works fine for any usb transfers with itunes on the desktop ...

it will drive you crazy and PO you royally...

That is odd. Never realized all of that, luckily my updates have gone smoothly (and I'm on Windows too). Surprised how finicky all of that is, even though I've been lucky I can see why people are having problems.

The more agressive you are defending a Windows computer from viruses and spyware, the more problems apple/iTunes etal. seem to have with sync and updates. The only answer in my case (Vista32 with ZoneAlarm) is to shut down ZoneAlarm completely whenever I do an OS update or synch on any iDevice. The weaker Windows firewall automatically kicks in but seems not to interfere with the secret things apple wants to do.
