What external instruments panel? There's an external devices panel in options but doubleclicking on it there just brings up a dialogue to edit it - not the gui. I've tried doubleclicking on everywhere it's inserted but it does nothing.

In the panel below, where you loaded it to. I assume you're talking about the Qwerty keyboard. Double clicking it (or anything) there toggles the UI's open/shut.

I assume it's loaded there already. If not, click the + button and load it there.

Oh I see - I needed to have the mixer open too.

Well I do get a sound using this, as with the Virus Ti midi input - but just not with the Kore midi input selected. Must be a bug but an annoying one as I usually use Kore for most things.

If you want to walk through this step by step and try to get it working, I'm game. I guess the first thing I'd ask, to clarify for me, is exactly what the Kore thing is.

Is it an ordinary hardware midi keyboard that spits out midi when you play? I'm a little confused not knowing what it is exactly, the Kore device. Don't laugh, I own one keyboard, a Roland D5 that I use as a midi input device.

Is this thing using a midi cable or is it a USB midi connection?

If it's a software instrument that's passing midi you play - through - it to be recorded on a midi track then you need to select it's output as the track's input I guess. That's what I do to capture midi drum patterns from Kontakt to midi until I read the manual and learn a better way.

It's an all-in-one device made by Native Instruments - an audio/midi interface/controller (which I have connected to a V-Synth which I use as my midi keyboard input as well as hardware synth) - plus also a software instrument/effect/host and preset librarian all rolled into one. So it's receiving midi from the V-Synth via ordinary midi cable and passing it into my laptop via USB. In that sense it's no different from any USB audio/midi interface - the software aspect is irrelevant in this context.

My alternative interface is my Virus Ti desktop which can also function as an audio/midi interface in pretty much the same way - V-Synth in -> USB midi - > laptop.

Ah... ok. Let's start from the beginning and make sure you are passing midi from that device into Studio One...

Open the midi monitor: View Menu: Midi Monitor (or click the little midi plug on the transport)

Try to play through that device into the software and see if it registers on the midi monitor. Forget about the transport midi light thingy, there may be something going on there confusing the issue.

Let me know. Play some notes and it should show up there in the midi monitor. If it doesn't capture midi data there, nothing is coming in. Make sure your instrument track is in monitor and assigned to the Kore midi input device.

Ok, if the midi monitor is capturing (and showing note data), we're good there. Is the channel meter for the instrument track you're monitoring and playing into moving / reflecting the incoming activity when you play midi notes?

You should see an orange meter for midi activity. On the track.

If so, if it's metering when you play, and assuming you have the content, drop an instance of Presence on that track and tell me if you hear anything when you play and flicker the meter and if you don't hear anything, is there audio activity in it's output channel meter in the mixer when you play.

btw have any of you guys experienced that when using impact and choosing "presets/kits" from the drop down menu on impact when you doubleclick on a kit the drop down menu doesent disappear like on the other instruments??

not a biggie i know but kind of annoying
