I don't agree. At the end on the day we are talking about a modification on the sofware to make it work in a different way than it was intended to, that's not fair and probably goes against the EULA. It doesn't matter if such modification is easy or complex. I have deleted the fake plugins and I will not use Artist this way as long as Presonus doesn't say it's ok (I don't think this is going to happen).autumndreams wrote:No, that's cleverness.cwig wrote:Isn't that almost the same as piracy?standalone wrote:With Artist:hibidy wrote:With the hack, or are you talking about the "pro" version?
And sloppiness on Presonus' part. It's their fault that this workaround exists, not the user's. Should they patch it, fair doos.
But...that said, the Karma balances out in my mind. When you trick the program into doing something that it should have been able to do in the first place.
And about if it should support third party's plugins, they have all the right to configure their products as they wish, nobody is forced to buy.

Hm... reminds me of when Microsoft tried to prevent people from installing other OS:s sometime in the 90's.... IMO this is not even a hack in the traditional sense. I can't imagine it would fall under some illegal activities to change some filenames on your own computer. It will probably file under fair use so to say it's not fair is a bit strange. It's not like downloading some cracking program and circumvent any encryption protection. Maybe illegal in the US but I would be surprised if it was in Europe. But then, I'm no lawyer like the most of you.standalone wrote:I don't agree. I'm not a lawyer either, I said "probably". I feel it's not fair as long as Presonus says it's ok, but maybe I'm being too picky here, I don't know.jensa wrote:Hm... reminds me of when Microsoft tried to prevent people from installing other OS:s sometime in the 90's.... Whether its right or wrong is up for debate, but they are still taking orders knowing that the hack exists.I brought a second license with no problems just yesterday, and checking the link today,it still works.standalone wrote:

If they must restrict a product which normally costs 199 dollars then perhaps allowing five or so VST plug-ins would be fairer.

Frankly, I don't think that renaming a file (and for that matter a file that doesn't belong to the licensed software in question) constitutes a hack. Just my 2c.

I personally think that PreSonus has been aware of this modification in a long while. And I think it's quite clever.
It has been said that to be able to use any VST, it's best to load a host like Xlutop Chainer. Yet, when you want to modify a patch on a synth, you must open the host inside your S1 channel, then open the plugin in the host, which can be a lot of hassle when you have a lot going on.
This way, some people will get used to using VSTs in S1 Artist, and realise that their workflow, and possibly stability, is much better when you actually use the Pro Version.
The development of a DAW is so complex that the possibility of a simple file renaming hack can not have been overlooked. It just has been unadvertised as this makes Guitar Rig LE and EZ Drummer much easier to bundle up.

Quite right, and well said; but this is the internet world. In real life, about 25% of the population has little or no conscience, and on the internet, it's more like 60%.

Anyway, those guys are pretty cool and if they had a problem with people doing the plugin hack thing they'd either close the loophole or make a statement about it. Seeing how they've not done either thing I think the message is pretty clear... that they think highly enough about their product to feel that most will eventually upgrade to Pro anyway so... why worry about it.
They (the devs and team) don't seem to sweat small stuff like that.

This file renaming thing is starting to get somewhat silly.
Two days ago I found a guy selling pirated copies of VST-plugins on a slightly lesser well known site for selling stuff. Instead of debating if it was legit or not here I did something about it and emailed the affected developers and got a positive reply and a thanks from almost all of them. That's something we all could do. Hunt some real pirates, not questioning the ethics of renaming some files. Sigh.

We can't make any official proclamation about stuff like that without getting knee deep in lawyers, but I doubt if we're going to be sending the goons around to kidnap your grandmother or something anytime soon.
We're happy people are enjoying using our software.
