I kind of never tried this freebie, don't know why.
I just did so and it is quite impressive.

I have tried a couple of times to encourage Siegfried to go on with develoment, the last time was june 2010 but sadly haven't heard from him since.

I hope he is well and the reason is other and more interesting things in his life.

Whenever I do a new build/rebuild for myself or someone else, there are
two plugins that go in the 'Paid for' folder. The first is synth1, the
second is SQ8L. If you get me? They are the two most powerful/versatile/easy
to use plugins in the world imvho. That is right - SQ8L is the best free
VSTi on the planet, except for synth1 ;-) And the two easiest on the CPU!

It is a brilliant emulation for sure. I never had a SQ only an SD, so obviously
I am not qualified to say, but, it sure does have a bit of that ol' Ensoniq
flavour! Big and fat, more than warm or smooth. Cutting through a mix on some
presets, sitting and playing nicely with other sounds in a mix, on others...

I'm ashamed to say I never donated. I could have taken the time, but you know,
so many plugins...so little time....not even the money - just a few dollars
here or there to show encouragement and appreciation can make all the difference to a labour of love like this must have been. I hope Sigi is well. Even if he has decided not to pursue this, I wish him good health at least...

I would be quite happy to pay up front for a pro version, and would not complain
about if and when it materialised. And if Sigi said that he got fed up coz there was little love in the donation department, I would be more than happy to chuck a few dollars/euros his way.

Sometimes things get overlooked. Even if he decides not to do the 'pro'
version, I will donate at some point soon (after being bled dry by soft
und hardware purchases).

For example, I purchased Scanned Synth Pro a couple of months back and
only payed a few dollars for it. I knew nothing about it and wanted to
check it out. I hardly used it... except a few times when I was blown
away by it's sounds - some of the best choir and formant voice sounds
I have ever heard. I felt really guilty. I am going to have to send
a couple of quid more to the Humanoids...

Anyway Sigi, if you're reading this, at least let us know you're ok.
Any info on development would be a bonus!

cheers.

I agree this is a great synth. But now I just remembered why I didn't have this in my hard disk. It just crashes with Reaper so much.

Hi all,

this synth is really awesome, but I have seldom used it during last year because it crashes Cubase and Nuendo 5 almost instantly.
Using it it in a sub-host (Kore2, Bidule, etc.) works BTW...

I've contacted the developer and he told me that he has to do something for that (a bugfix?) but it was more than a year ago and nothing happened.

I love my old ESQ-1 and having it in my virtual rig was a dream, it's a real pity that it isn't developed further!

Cheers everyone, hoping that there will be at least a new bugfix in the future for this beloved synth...

I did a track with a couple of instances of it yesterday on WIn XP with Reaper. No problems so far.
What OS are you using ?

I'm using W7 64bit with 32-bit reaper. I think the crashes may be more prominent when loading a project with SQ8L or changing a patch. Of course it doesn't crash all the time, but still..

When I first tried SQ8L couple of years ago, I had the same symptoms. Back then I was using Win XP with my older machine.

cheers

Works without any problem in Mu.Lab.

How about hitting him up again . letting him know about this 67 page love fest .
Let him know a automation / midi cc controllable version is all we really ask for . Make donation ware ala DaHornet if he chooses , but damn it would be a shame not to keep it going :?

SQ8L is one of those rare gems; the only virtual instrument I truly miss being on OSX these days. I do hope the project is still a labor of love for Siegfried. It has such a wonderful old sound.

I'm on OSX too . I use it in the SM pro audio VFX app and it works fine .

So anything ?

Post

No, sadly i haven't heard anything from Siegfried.

It looks like we have to keep SQ8L in a safe place from now on :(
But i'm sooo glad it even exist and it is so incredible good, so it is not a big downer for me anyway.

It's more sad if Siegfried lost interest in the project because of something we don't know of.
