Tomias Erichsen has released "loopMidi". This is a new tool to create virtual midi cables on a local PC based on his great rtpMidi software components.
It's free for personal use, 32bit and 64bit compatible with XP, Vista and Win 7 and can create as many cables as you need dynamically on the fly without reboot.

Thanks Tobias for sharing this for free for personal use!

I like this virtual MIDI ports, they are very useful. I made my own touch control panel for Cantabile which sends MIDI messages via similar software (LoopBe).

loopBe1 is nice too but if you need more than one port you need to purchase loopBe30...
I mentioned loopMidi because it's free and you can create as many ports as you wish on the fly. A specialty is that ports are always bidirectional, in other words two midi cables. This can help reduce some confusion or patching hazards.
You can also use rtpMidi which I already reported a time ago. This is midi via network and it's free too! ipMidi from Nerds is again payware... But rtpMidi is not only midi via networks, it's compatible with Macs native midi, so you can establish midi ports between PC and Mac.
loopMidi just makes it simpler to create virtual midi cables on the same machine. You can do the same with rtpMidi, it's just more cumbersome to set up for this purpose.
Anyway, to sum up, Tobias' stuff is free for personal use, unlimited in features, network capable, 64bit compatible, supporting XP, Vista, Win7 and is Mac-networking compatible... I don't know anything better - for free.
That's why I think one should try it.
