Pretty sure the synth from riverside was horn sample, this one sounds very similar.

You could try 2 Saws with the 2ns heavily detuned say 90 cents or something ridiculous. Throw a fastish LFO on both OSCs to give it a of vibrato.

That's the basic idea, it's just getting it to sound as much like a horn as possible.

thanks a lot, thats basically it. sindey uses this sound in more than riverside though, theres a similar one in his "club can't handle me" remix, surely he wouldnt have used samples for both?

i dunno, i'd just expect more than samples from such a popular artist.

don't :) Fatboy Slim & Basement Jaxx entire sound is based on samples. it's house music brotha

thats a good point. but i mean. i dont know, its hard to explain, but to make a whole melody out of one sample, if i did that i would feel like i cheated?

Do you apply the same thinking to tracks that sample an old song? Say, Eric Prydz - Call On Me or the countless disco house records.

I guess the challenge is to balance the idea you have using samples with your own ceative credibility. The reality, as allcentury said, is that this is house music baby. A good record is a good record no matter what the source material. A shit record on the other hand may not be scutinized so liberally :)

well im fine with sampling large parts of old songs if your going to do a cover or whatever, but to build your reputation on a .wav file is a different thing. i would respect someone much more if they took the time to create their own synth. but thats my opinion. i also accept people like armin van helden who use a shit load of samples, but i expect that from his sort of disco funk style.

your view is great too though, i get that, but i don't think i'd be happy with myself. but hey, i only just realised i didnt have to layer kicks and spend 20 mins on them hahaha! its much easier now :)

I get what your saying, and I reckon at some point we've all been there. Maybe think about it like this; If he found that horn sample, used it to create a synth sound that became his trademark (and no one else has ever used it) is that less credible than creating a patch in a synth that no one's ever made before? Personally I don't think so. The process is essentially the same, it's only the source that is different.

p.s I agree with we're your coming from though, I used to never use drum loops; thought it was cheating. These days I'll throw one in here & there if they are called for. Not the greastest moral turn-a-round of all time, but you get what I mean.
