Any news on Adobe Audition 4?

Question, do you know when this feature was added to AA? Was this an added feature AFTER V1.5 or is this in V1.5?

Hey Dennis, this feature is in v1.5, along with a spectacular FFT vocoder. Beware the processing time though (vocoder), it's not a heavily optimized process. In fact, Adobe doesn't even support development of their native plugins anymore, and recommend everyone use VST.

One thing AA needs desperately is a 64-bit build, and a complete rewrite of their plugins for multi threading.

Another less drastic thing would be a way to move the play cursor inside of a selection without having to use the transport, as this can only do 8x scrub. This is useful to me for chopping up very large files.

Tucked away in an AudioMasters forum thread which on the face of it has nothing to do with AA4 is some developer comment on why some features such as midi and CD burning will not appear on the next version. Have a skim through looking for those nuggets if interested.

I thought v3 already had some limited midi and vsti support? So are they scrapping even those or are they just not being developed beyond that limited level?

Essentially SCRAPPING what's there aMUSEd.

Basically the next version of Audition is a complete rewrite, and will be cross-platform. The feature set will be the same on both platforms, and they've taken the opportunity to revisit the basic purpose and positioning of Audition as a product.

So they recognise that the whole emphasis and strength of Audition is in audio editing, mastering, etc. And they want to improve video integration with Premier Pro, understandably. Those are the areas they are working on, and they have decided not to bother rewriting the MIDI aspects into the new version. Also they are dropping the CD burn page, at least for now.

The big question for me is whether as an existing AA3 owner it will be worth upgrading to 4. After all, nobody wants to pay for an upgrade that removes stuff! I don't use the MIDI at all (it is basically DOA anyway) but I do use the CD burn page. A lot of users are complaining at the decision to leave this out it seems, so perhaps Adobe will relent, or build it back in with version 4.5...

The beta at least is missing a lot of features I use all the time for audio editing. Pitch bend is gone(Adobe said they didn't think it was used much(!!??)). I'm pretty sure tone generators are missing. I can't remember what else. I didn't use it much because it wasn't very stable/crashed trying to load vsts/aus. I dunno, we'll see with the full version.

Adobe forums and Audio masters have stated that no midi implementation and CD burning option will make it on V4. More or less said get Nero.

A complete rewrite for x64 and Win 7 sounds good to me.

There is no such thing as an all in one solution and if there is go and use it.

We all have different workflow with our midi and audio. As long as Adobe doesn't delete Multitrack from Audition I will be happy. Still has the best mixer interface by a long shot.

Owners of V3 will only have to cough up about 99 usd. Small price for great app.

I believe we will see release around June/July and no I'm not beta tester.

I was AA back when it was cool edit, I went for years swearing your statement is true. FL/AA (I stopped at AA2.0) were the perfect combo, then I got Samplitude 9 Pro and yes, as far as hosts go there is such a thing as an all in one solution. Of course that's not counting adding vsti for synths, drums and samples but I do not even have any of my old voxengo stuff installed. AA is not on my DAW but FL is and always will be.

Audio editing imho in samp picks up where AA leaves off, the cd burning is great and I understand that in earlier versions of samp the midi wasn't all that...but that has been more than taken care of. Sascha's am suite and other fx are top notch, the freeze which is really for me just a bounce in place feature might be the best freeze in the business. Using it as I do just to bounce leaves me seconds away from editing the midi if need be but then it's right back to a wave. Object editing is simply amazing and imo the only way to work.

I mean no offense at all by this because I believe you would be right if you said this 5 or 6 years ago, but your statement is antiquated thinking by today's standards (imo of course). I think there are a lot of all in one solutions and nothing speeds up your workflow like keeping it all in one.

edit: oh and the mixer? Sorry, I cannot agree there and for dozens of reasons, 2 channel surround in samp instead of pan (you have a choice), the channel eqs, the master section and being able to skin the mixer in samp, k-meter...the list goes on. The eqs have one thing I love about voxformer, the mouse wheel controls the slope by just hovering over the frequency you're adjusting.

I really must try out Samplitude one of these days, but I doubt it's notation editing and score presentation would meet my needs ... in fact they couldn't anyway, because Sibelius is the industry standard that all UK publishers require me to submit my work in.

In terms of a DAW being all things... the one that impressed me the most and came nearest was Cubase. But I've resigned myself to the recognition that - for me at least - having one programme that deals with everything in one place is much the same as having one huge complicated programme...

I feel REALLY inspired to make music in Reason/Record, and for me it is the fastest, easiest and most fun to use software. But then I also feel inspired to compose for piano and orchestra with Sibelius, and approach music there using my classical training. And yet again I feel inspired to do wild sample editing and sound experimentation within Audition 3 (the spectral frequency/pan/phase editing tools and features still blow my mind!). With the stuff like Cubase, Sonar etc I feel that the power is buried in a variety of menus someplace, and I don't feel inspired to do any of those things.

I guess all I am saying is that to each their own, and people have a different, often very personal approach to workflow and what suits them. The tools we have may have changed since five years ago, but the human interaction element will probably never change. For me personally it really helps to work in software that keeps me directly focussed.

I have both Samplitude and AA. I like both and for quick and dirty editing for Voice Overs, AA is what most need... but if you want to peel back the onion, check out Samplitude. An amazing DAW!

As Hink says, I would expect it to be middle of next year for AA4. In the meantime, AA3 is superb (except the MIDI thing). It's really THE audio editor imho.
