AFAIK only Reaper let's you use a vst(i) midi plug as an insert (except modulars like bidule, ext,..)

With cubase, sonar, live,.. you need one track where you put the midi plug then another track that receives the midi from that track. Procedure on each is a bit different.

Another option with those hosts is to use a little subhost like Wusik VW, Bidule, .. which will host both the midi plug(s) and the audio ones.
It's not as fun as with reaper (were you can also quickly drag move/copy the plug to another track), but it will/should work.

For cubase SX 3

Open Vsti(F11) Load Kirnu

Create a midi track:

1 midi track - Input: = All midi input
Output: = Kirnu

Open 2 midi track, choose IN = Kirnu

Output= your VST synth or hardware synth

hope it help someone, And both Midi tracks needs to be enabled/Active

Why not add a few videos to the Kirnu website of how to setup the plugin in different hosts? Even if Arto doesn't own all hosts the users that does could help out with this since the plugin is donation/freeware.

And why not asking this to the ones that made such a crappy midi vst implementation .. steinberg, cakewalk, ableton, ...

Steinberg has MIDI inserts (including an arpeggiator in the box, but not as cool as this one). So i don't think this is an issue of host design.

Thanks for this! I'm waiting for the mac port too :)

Good luck with other future vst's!

I don't think that would be as succesfull as asking a kind user to make a 1min video. However that's just my humble opinion...

In the end, having those videos will make the "how do I setup this in..." questions alot fewer.

Sure they have a (buggy) sdk that let's you create midi plug but there are very few 3rd party plugs and it's abandonware. All the cool stuff is vst.
Same with cakewalk, mfx is totally abandonware, not much running in this format.

Ableton wants you to buy max for live to run 3rd party free plugs (gmab).

Sorry but having to use two tracks to run a single midi plug just sucks.
In reaper i have often 4-5 midi plugs on a single track, you would need 4-5 extra tracks with cubase ,sonar,live,...
You can even have 1 midi plug followed by an instrument, then a another midi + audio one or whatever.
And that's how things should be.

Actually, no. This is the "old" and still working way. If it'd be hardware, the routing would be the same. "Reaper" is oof the charts from day one anyway. Doesn't mean that they do things "better" - just different. They have to abide to standards as well.

So when you need 5 audio fx as inserts you're routing them thru 5 tracks like the good all days ? why not,,
I like to have all my fx (midi and audio) on a single track with the instruments, it's so much easier to create complex layers. Any host should let you do that, imo.

Well it's interesting that Steinberg's VST interface supports this in reaper but Cubase doesn't support it.

I can't say that I've ever really thought about needing the ability to daisy-chain VSTis before but I guess it's not a bad idea when you see what one can do with that ability.

Well if things are getting a bit complicated I'll use Bidule vst, but for simple stuff I like to see them directly in reaper's mixer.

example using bidule, and it's just the top of the iceberg, using a few groups and subgroups:

Try that with hardware ;)

Wow that is pure madness i would be soo lost!
I bet my brain's connections are looking something like this, though there are stuff that is routed totally wrong, haha

Can someone give a working method for FL studio?

Figuerd it out

Open Kirnu, route Both midi in and out to desired channel number, lets say 0
then open your Vsti, route same here, midi in and out to 0

now highlight Kirnu and you get the sound from the synth through Kirnu

midi input and output routing is next beside "select a plugin" folder, the dropdown menu, first choose in, then go back and check out and change that as well
