Ok this may sound like a dumb question, but i'm pretty new. I'm sure there's a way i can download more realistic instruments right? If so how do i do that/where do I get them? If i can't download them, can I use the sounds on my keyboard? I know there's a way to hook that up i'm just not sure how. Thanks to any helpers!

you do ask some basic questions. you need to find a midi and audio interface for your computer. these can be separate or rolled into one unit (which may be advantageous to new users). theyre simple these days with just a single usb plug and perhaps a simple driver to install an then voila, you can use them within mu.lab.
you want realistic sounds? any sound can sound realistic. its truly up to you how realistic you make your sounds. you want to sound like a real... what? guitar? flute? synth? saxophone? human voice? most are very possible. check out the variety of sounds people are able to get using just mu.labs internal synths and perhaps some samples!

Try VST-Plugins. mu.lab can handle that. Some of my favourite VST sites:Keenya wrote:Ok this may sound like a dumb question, but i'm pretty new. I'm sure there's a way i can download more realistic instruments right? If so how do i do that/where do I get them?

For realistic sounds I specify velocity for each note and also use a "humanzier"-plugin, which randomly adds some timing deviations and should be inserted in a rack above the instrument module. Humanizers are pretty good especially for drums and piano.

Sampler plugins and sample sets are generally the way to go for non-synthesized instruments. You will have to whack down some cash though, in general.Keenya wrote:Ok this may sound like a dumb question, but i'm pretty new. That said, there's a few free bits n bobs out there, but hard to say without knowing what sort of realistic instruments you're after. Drums, guitars, strings, ethnic instruments?
The free Kontakt player and factory selection are a bit of a pain to set up but give you some good, commercial quality sampled instruments.

IK Multimedia has re-released SampleTank Free, you might take a look at that. It has a mixture of natural and electronic sound, based on samples. It's also important to realize that the performance aspect is important: if you want, e.g., a flute sample to sound like a flute in your piece, you need to mimic the performance that a human flute player would bring. Likewise for any other acoustic instrument, or one like an electric guitar.
