A track I threw together in NS on iPad entirely from synths and sounds I made

I have a Nanostudio track that uses all 16 pads for audio triggering and the 4 synths + effects at 17% power on my iPod Touch. I have absolutely no complaints. Seems to be that it could run at least 2 more synths if allowed.

Case for me is that the apps are fun and inspiring and that I can get a result within their limitations. If I like it, I learn it. Their flaws and workflow are secondary to that as far as this do not abrupt the process as a whole.

In this respect I believe that to the skilled, every toy is a tool, and to the unskilled, every tool is a toy.

Though I might not be among the skilled, I like to approach these apps as tools and not toys. I keep my expectations low and is either satisfied or positively surprised. Works pretty well for me and is recommendable.
I agree that if we use tools while understanding their limitations and strengths, we will get much more out of them instead of feeling crippled all the time. It's all about the right tools for the right job, and having the right expectations. For example, I love MS's ergonomics, but the sounds are nowhere near acceptable for serious compositions, so I will simply use it to compose, and will export the midi to have the sounds replaced by quality instruments and plugins. With NS, since I tend to like to use a lot of simultaneous tracks, elaborate modulations, complex arps, and so on, I think for electronic music, the mobile platform might not be there yet for me. Especially that the compositional process of electronic music is all about the minute details and textures of the sounds and how they evolve, it'll be far less effective or inspirational to use "temp" sounds and then replace them later, as often the sounds themselves ARE the inspiration and focus. Another thing that bug me about NS is that the synths patches are not categorized or easy to navigate. I've posted a wish list at the NS forum, and I hope there will be a better patch browsing system in the future.

With competition heatingup, I have no doubt we'll see some impressive evolutions of these apps in the near future.

Downer :( Look what CM magazine has to say about Garageband for iPad

http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/gar ... /4#content
However, what you won't find is much in the way of audio or MIDI editing - a piano roll is particularly conspicuous by its absence.
No piano roll?

And while it seems that it supports audio loops as well as midi tracks, it has no audio editing either.

Seems like my plans with Garageband will be set on "stand by", I am afraid.

Hit by the boomerang: My expectations were obviously too high this time! However with a brand like Garageband, I really thought they were justified.

Time to get wiser.

I have no intention of composing with it, for me Garageband is an instrument. And a great one it is. For $5 it is a steal! I am using the guitar in it now in a piece I am working on (project in Reaper). I just plug the iPad in to my PC, and play it.... awesome.....

Garageband is without a doubt the best $5 you can spend on your iPad, if you have any interest at all in music..... It is just fun...

An interesting fact, at least to me, is that your piece sounds just as good as the same type of piece done in FL, Orion....etc. Without the posted info that it was made on on iPad, no one would know. The fact that you created each sound yourself makes it even better.

The synths don't sound so good.

Here is a naive little iPod Touch tune using Nanostudio as base.

I mainly use the Eden Synth, but have also transferred bass loops made on Finger bassline, Nlog Midi Synth and DXi. In addition, I have used some kick samples samples of my own. The voices are respectively VOX 3000, a text-to speech generator, and my own voice through the iVoxel Vocoder (recorded with my iPods internal mic).It is mixed in Nanostudio and uploaded directly to Sound Cloud.

Cheers

Well, this just proves that you had/have the right expectations for it, while mine missed the target. Maybe I'll buy it, if I manage to change my perception of it from a DAW to a "Fun instrument". Time will tell.

Nanostudio has been updated with features that really take the lead so far, IMO. More tracks and insert effects.

This is from the Nanostudio forums:
Apple approved NanoStudio V1.2 this morning and it's now available in the app store!

The manual, OS X and Windows versions are now out of beta and you can get the new V1.2 versions from the download page.

Here's what's changed since V1.13:

* In-app purchase to upgrade from 6 to 16 instrument tracks
* Configurable instruments on each track (TRG or Eden), mixer has its own track
* Configurable mixer with volume/pan automation and up to 4 insert effects per bus (input, send or output)
* New effects include compressor, 3 band parametric EQ and Lo-Fi (bitcrush/decimate) setting added to waveshaper
* Offline processing of samples through an effects chain using the sample editor (with undo)
* Up to 4 sequencer tracks per instrument (up to 64 sequencer tracks in total)
* Retina display support for iPod/iPhone 4
* Supports launching and purchasing other audio copy/paste apps via the Sonoma compatible apps list
* TRG pad copy/paste function for duplicating pad settings and samples
* Sequencer track mute/solo, quantize down to 1/64, quantize event length and end as well as start, view grid without snapping
* Better mixer VU meters and accurate clip detection algorithm for final output stage
* Better 'picker' for choosing controller events in the pattern editor, note events can now be seen when editing controllers
* Eden loads samples ahead of time, so preset changes are ready when they're needed
* Added triplet settings to Eden LFO (this will affect some existing projects and presets)
* Increased instrument polyphony
* New Akai SynthStation25 button operation
* Tempo/time sig available from main menu
* New 'click only during record' setting
* Loads of small improvements and bugfixes
:wheee: :hyper:  :tu:

Yep. Checkmate! The new 1.2 version of Nanostudio is INCREDIBLE!!! The compressor he added is superb! It's got both peak and RMS modes and sounds fantastic.

It's absurd how much sequencing power we now have within our pockets. Ridiculous amounts of fun this app! Very highly recommended!

Matt (the developer) is a genius. :hail: :hail: :hail:

Cheers!

Is there a way to use NS with Music Studio, or a synth app of some kind. Can you play in the background or sync these apps together? The Gorillaz did it recently with 'The Fall' album. They used a bunch of apps but I'm trying to find out how you combine them in one project?

Can you record audio with BT2 and then edit if need, like Music Studio?

Yes. Currently it depends on the apps. Gorillaz used apps like Funkbox which does that.

There's a commonly agreed framework being built by a group of iOS developers to share audio, MIDI, instructions, and user input between iOS apps simultaneously.
