USB Audio in for iPod Touch 4G? When?

Apparently, the iPod Touch 4G no longer has stereo line ins on its 30-pin connector; none of analog stereo mic solutions that worked with the older iPT work with the newer one. The only way to get a stereo audio signal into the iPT-4G is supposedly via USB input, in digital format, according to some posts on the Audiofile Engineering forums.
It's already been shown that the iPad will accept a self-powered class-compliant USB audio input (Nagra MX, Apogee MiniMe, among others) using the Camera Connector Kit (CCK) which provides a USB input. This means that in principle it should work on the iPT-4G.
However the CCK doesn't work on the iPT-4G, so it's unclear what's happening; either the iPad and iPT differ in pinout assignments, connector-based I/O pin ID biasing requirements, or the USB input is disabled in the iPT. Since the iConnect MIDI inteface has been announced, which connects to the iPT, some kind of USB input should be possible.
Does anyone know what's going on with this? There's a lot of whispering but no facts. Using the iPT as a digital audio recorder could be real handy.

There are a couple different options from Apogee:Breeze wrote:Apparently, the iPod Touch 4G no longer has stereo line ins on its 30-pin connector; none of analog stereo mic solutions that worked with the older iPT work with the newer one. Unfortunately neither are your typical 2in/2out device with XLR+1/4" combo jacks, say something like a Tascam US-144 with a dock connector. That's really what I've been hoping for.
However I will definitely be getting both the Mike and Jam. They're reasonably priced for what they are, and if I can go somewhere with just my iPhone (which I carry anyway) and the Mike to record something quick, it's of definite use to me.

FYI: the word from Apogee is that these interfaces won't be compatible with the iPT-4G.polaris20 wrote:There are a couple different options from Apogee:

Really? That's odd. I wasn't aware there was any difference between the iPT4 and the iPhone 4 in regards to how it handles dock devices.Breeze wrote:FYI: the word from Apogee is that these interfaces won't be compatible with the iPT-4G.polaris20 wrote:There are a couple different options from Apogee:

It sounds pretty fishy to me too. I think the iPhone 4 and the iPad have more RAM and possibly larger batteries, and maybe that makes a difference. But it could also be Apple's marketing strategy.polaris20 wrote:Really? That's odd. No, the iPad and iPT4 both have only 256MB of RAM, the iPad 2 and iPhone for have 512MB. Must be something else.Breeze wrote:It sounds pretty fishy to me too. From the specs it seems that iPod Touch 4G is supported.

This mic plugs into the mic input of the headphone jack. That input is mono and is severely high-pass filtered as discussed here. You can see it on the graphs posted here.Cochrane wrote:http://www.ikmultimedia.com/irigmic/specs/

I'm pretty sure IKM must do some kind of Bass boost to somewhat compensate for this curve. In the end it's not a proper full-range stereo solution for the iPT.

Depressingly, it seems that us iPT4g users are out of luck.Breeze wrote:It sounds pretty fishy to me too. The Apple store very explicitly lists iPhone 4, iPad and iPad 2 as the only compatible iDevices. See here..

And this, despite the fact that the JAM comes not too far down the list if you select "iPod Accessories" from the "Department" selector on the left on the front page of the store...

Which is, frankly, just cruel...
So, regardless of whether any technical or physical limitations exist, we're still not invited to the party...

I feel your pain, dude. I'm an iPhone user as of about a month ago, but was an iPT user for years. We were always treated as the iPhone's bastard child by the accessories companies.seanb wrote:Depressingly, it seems that us iPT4g users are out of luck.Breeze wrote:It sounds pretty fishy to me too. Check it out: iPods are only 13% of Apple's current revenue.
The iPod Touch must be a sliver.
But maybe there's hope. I got this note from Apogee:

At the moment, Jam is only compatible with iPad, Mac, and iPhone 4.
We are hoping to add iPod compatibility for jam.

Not sure about the Audio Damage interface: it doesn't actually mention anything but the Pad.
But the Fostex AR-4i looks promising.
Nice to see finally see some developments!
