glokraw,

I second that. A few days ago at night, I having a nice time tweaking the parameters, I believe it was the Add Synth's waveform changing paramaters, and the loudest blurp of distortion SHOT into the headphones... I flew out of my chair, almost had a heart attack.

It only happens when I play notes while tweaking these parameters. Now I do not touch the keyboard during this time. :hihi:

Thanks for headphones tip.

And as general security (headphones and monitors), when you don't mix and only compose, put a brickwall limiter (loudmax is free and very good)with threshold set right at your working level (something like -6dB is a good starter).

If a burst happen, being a brickwall, it will lower it instantaneously ;)
You can even put this on your projects template by default.

It saved my a** with synths like Chimera : it is a (very good) noise oscillators synth :hihi:

And remember to remove it or set it better when you mix ;)

Very good advice, thank you both of you.

Unfortunately, I believe this to be a bug in ZynAddSubFX, at least where the waveshaping is concerned.

@glokraw, bjporter: really sorry to hear about the noise bursts!!!

Please try:

<<Removed. Loud bursts problem not solved! Please try again later :P>>

ZynAddSubFX VST
ver. 2.4.1.452beta VST VDX version

- Hopefully no more loud bursts of sound!! (unfortunately I cannot guarantee this... please be cautious and test this new beta first)
- Changed the way sounds is shut off when changing presets
- Changed the way the sound is updated in realtime when the oscillator is edited in realtime
- Fixed crashing GUI on multiple open xmz dialogs *really, really* this time :D :D :D
- Fixed the save xmz dialog (the previous version would have the save button disabled under some conditions)
- GUI Change: Now if you press CTRL and a knob, it will show the knob value, and you can also edit the value (enter the value manually)

Jackoo, thanks for your effort, I really appreciate it... I will try this ASAP.

BTW, ZynAddSub is quite possibly the most intense UBER oscillator stacking synth of all time, and puts the Virus TI hypersaw to shame.

I mean 8 x 50 detuned stacked oscillators is totally wicked!!

Jackoo,

I am getting a popup: "Searched for C:\ZynAddSub[..]\zynaddsubfxXML.cfg]. Failed to find appropriate cfg file. Loading defaults! Also writing the cfg file now, with the default parameters!"

Odd because ZynAdd is actually in C:\program files\steinberg\vstplugins folder

After that it doesn't make noise, but loads ok. I'll report back later if I find something

Zyn must now be installed in C:\ZynAddSubFX only. Please see the readme.

This is because on x64 systems Program Files is reserved for 64bit, and is not accesible.

Please make manually a folder C:\ZynAddSubFX, then run zyn, close zyn, check for the cfg file, then go in settings and correctly adjust buffer size and oscil size.

Also please copy all your banks in C:\ZynAddSubFX

So in C:\ZynAddSubFX you must have your cfg file and the banks. It doesn't matter where the dll is. You can keep the dll in your VST plugin folder.

Jackoo,

Yeah that was one of the first things I tried...

Reverted back to old version and now the sound works. Had to restart computer though. Strange. BTW, I meant to say it is actually in Program Files (x86) not Program Files.

Good advice, and long overdue for me to heed it, I found these, and will try them out:

@ Jackoo: 8) 8) another update! Thanks again (and again :) )

@glokraw: thanks, but I really think it's important to protect our gear and ears, so I thought an investigation towards what causes that is in order. I hope I doesn't do that anymore, though I can't be sure because it never happened to me. Can you please tell me the host and what patch change caused the loud burst of noise? And if you can replicate the problem again?

@bjporter: You mean the 452beta outputs no sound for you at all? that would be very strange. Can anybody else confirm this?

LE: Since many ppl use Reaper, I'm going to download the trial version and test the beta there. BTW: It looks like a really neat host, and I'm impressed by how lightweight it is.

LE2: wow! quite impressed by Reaper :) I think this could be my next acquisition... Now I've to learn how to use it. I tested 452beta quickly and didn't find changing the presets to be noisy. (Used trial version of the 32bit, on WinXP SP2). Please let me know if you encounter noise bursts again.

Also, by the looks of it, it seems to me a good idea to activate 'Allow complete unload of VST plug-ins' in Preferences > Plug-ins > VST

And also: 'Pre-zero VST audio buffers' seems quite important! Please keep that active.

About the loud spikes.

I can easily reproduce them by editing parameters in the osc editor while the synth is playing. Just remember a limiter. I always use one the master track. Just lower the gain before it, so that it wont clip under normal circumstances.

Also, I would prefer zynadd to still check the DAW root folder for the config file. It should be possible to check multiple locations, right?

@jackoo: I saw you wrote something about an QT-rewrite earlier. Would it be more realistic to create an QT-port of just the PAD-synth module? I think it would do fine on it's own.

laba170 wrote:I can easily reproduce them by editing parameters in the osc editor while the synth is playing.
@laba170: Did you try the latest version? What is your oscil size? What is your Buffer Size? What host? What kind of ASIO drivers do you use? What soundcard?

Did you adjust the sizes of those buffers according to your ASIO buffer size?
Are you sure the cfg is correctly written? (you shouldn't get a prompt at startup that it didn't find the cfg, at each startup)

What parameters cause the loud spikes? Simply tweaking harmonics amplitude and phase causes loud bursts, or other parameters in the oscil window?

Do you notice sound spikes when editing the osc of a simple sine patch? Or only to complex patches? Can you name one patch that always makes spikes, if you edit the osc?

Zyn doesn't know the DAW root folder, at runtime. I'm not sure how to implement that. At the moment it reads the banks and cfg only from the predefined C:\ZynAddSubFX folder. And most hosts change the active directory in different ways: the active directory is sometimes the project folder, sometimes the folder where the <DAW.exe> is or sometimes where the zyn dll is... So I just thought that a *common* path such as C:\ZynAddSubFX would be the best compromise.

Also a QT-based port.... would be smth I'd like too, but requires quite too much work for me, at the moment. It's fine for me to make fine adjustments and fix critical problems for the FLTK version, but porting it to QT is almost a rewrite of the thing. And it's about the same amount of work for either the whole zyn or the PAD-synth. Once you do one, you easily do the other.

Jackoo,

Tried a few more things, still no sound. It even freazes sometimes. It might have something to do with either VSTBridge, which is a pathetic attempt by Steinberg... or the Jbridge 1.2. I am running on 64bit. The 2.4.1445alpha runs great.

Jackoo (sorry I thought you were Paul  ), my Asio4All buffer size is 2048 (Old PC), what should be my Oscil size ..and Why ?

It's set to Asio 1024 and oscil 512 and it works, but sometimes it just goes silent when I'm tweaking, do the sizes have anything to do with this ? ( I'll change the Asio to 2048 and leave the Oscil as is, and see what happens).

BTW, this is an AMAZING synth you all made here, workflow is a bit akward(for me) but the sounds, and possibilities are GREAT !
