OK, in an attempt to breath life into the corpse of this thread, here are some clues.

UK band, around since 1977, had their biggest hit in 1982, but this wasn't it; this didn't even get into the UK Top 30. Allegedly the song is at least partially about this man and as a consequence contains many Antipodean references. No, that article doesn't contain any links to the band or the song; actually, I don't think it'll help at all...
