I'm happy to announce that my midi control app, MidiMe, is available in the app store today. MidiMe gives you four X/Y control pads for control of up to eight midi parameters at one time but also lets you automate midi CC by recording motions in the pads or sending your instruments bouncing with the bouncing ball mode.

MidiMe works with Apple's camera connection kit to send midi over USB and also works with midi over WiFi using core midi on a Mac or with rtpMidi on Windows.

You can find it on the app store here:

And a screenshot is here:

I'd particularly appreciate any feedback KVR members have about usability or features.

Looks interesting.. No promocodes for the broke? :)

Great. Thanks for posting news. Had a look on the AppStore. There is no info on wifi connectivity, what does it use in terms of third party midi / wifi to connect?
Does it support windows xp?
Would be nice to have more in depth info on dev website.
Cheers

Thanks very much for the feedback. You're absolutely right I need to put more details on the website. I'm on the road today but I plan to put up more details and a demo video in the next few days once I get settled in in Saigon.

My app does work over WiFi but I've only personally tested this on my Mac. I think there are Windows tools that should allow this to work on XP too but I haven't verified this. I need to get my bootcamp partition back in order and then I'll post some instructions for getting it working on the Windows side too.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions or if you have suggestions for improvements.

I thought all Swedes were rich! ;)

I am 100% in favor of supporting broke musicians but since I'm a broke coder I have to charge. Maybe I'll offer a few free codes later this week when I sit down to expand on the web info and make a demo video.

If someone already owns an iPad, why is $4.99 such a hardship? If you were offering to do beta testing, that would be one thing, but just because you're "broke" doesn't obligate the developer to give his work away.

Sorry for the rant - couldn't help it.

Hey. 4.99 is nothing. But there's so much much happening with iOS apps right now, I have about 50 'interesting' on my wishlist, and I've bought nearly hundred. I can't buy them all, might as well try to get some free, right :) And for the record, I'd gladly help with betatesting.

I'll need some beta testers for the next version. I'll keep you in mind.

Thanks mate,
Look fwd further info. I can imagine you were extited to get things up and visible.
As an FYI things that affect my purchase decisions for controller apps.
If an app works with camera connector kit rather than wifi it's a Definate, cos I'm rackin up a few midiwifi loop bee apple bonjour type interfaces now and in my experience, even with a red hot adhoc network, they can be flaky.
If apps that I will use with ableton require a control surface slot they need to be better than griid and kontrol pad, cos they take up my last 2 available spaces on ableton. :-) ..... Note to ableton please please more control surface slots....6 ain't enough

Will keep my eyes on yr app mate.

Cheers and keep up the good work

Interesting! About the motion recording - can you save the motions in presets? Are the loop lengths quantized?

dixie237, I use the regular wifi in my router and set the ports my iPad was using to highest priority in QoS settings. It's pretty snappy now.

Good questions. You can't currently save the recorded motions or quantize the loop lengths, but these are both features I have on the drawing board for future versions. As a musician myself, I understand why these are both desirable. I'm currently living out of hotels in Vietnam with only my laptop and iPad to make music so I have a lot of incentive to make MidiMe a good musical tool. ;)

I'm going to guide most of my development of this app going forward based on requests from users so feedback like this is a big help.

My 0.02: if you program some quantize options leave unquantized as an option. I like how unquantized gesture recording drifts. It's not random, it's not an LFO, it's... something else.

If I figure out a clean way to add quantization I'll definitely make it optional. I agree that the unquantized gestures can be a good source of surprises. With other music tools, like Ableton's clip envelopes, I deliberately stack up sequences of non-similar lengths to get new effects.

Thanks for the feedback.

Demo video up here, showing off the three control modes:

Sorry about the video quality. When I can get my hands on a better camera I'll put up something sharper. Hopefully you can get the idea from this.

A humble request:

I don't have access to any real midi gear here so I can't test this with the camera kit/USB. As far as I can tell from the Apple APIs this ought to just work, but since I can't test this myself I don't want to advertise this as a feature. If anybody's tried this I'd love to hear how it went.

New version with a few enhancements is coming soon.
