From previous experiences I do recall that there seem to be some differences between various Cubase/Synthedit versions as well as plugins and permissions. Some plugins would outright crash. Some will eventually reach a GUI after multiple launch attempts, but might not make sound. It's also possible (you'd need to check) that Windows may write the synthedit folder to a different location if it doesn't have permission under somewhere like program files, and that could cause some issues if something doesn't know where to find what it's looking for.

I just learned early on with Cubase on Windows 7 that whenever there's any weirdness or crashing on load issues with Synthedit plugins, it's pretty much always guaranteed to be related to permissions in some way.
Hi Pak,

I would have hoped that it was 'simply' a permission problem. But the users who had the problems told me that they were running without UAC or in administrator mode, and the problems still persisted.

Also, the fact that earlier versions run without problems seem to indicate that it is not related to permissions.

I posted a simplified plugin, stripped down to the bare minimum, but still causing reaper or cubase to crash, to the synthedit forum and hope that somebody has an idea.

Cheers,
Martin

Some more host tests with Win7 64-bit and PG-8X:
Reaper x64 = working
Studio One Pro x86 = working
Tobybear Minihost = working

So, it doesn't seems to be a host problem.
Could it be a missing windows runtime dll or something on computers with crash problems? Anything what the newer Synthedit version needs to run correctly?

That might be a good point. On Win XP, the new SE requires the VC++2010 resistributable package. I am not sure whether that is also necessary for Win7. Anyway, I looked up the download location for that:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... 50143D5867

I would be great, if people experiencing the problems under Win7 could try installing this package.

Thanks,
Martin

I have installed both the x64 and x86 C++ 2010 redistributables, but unfortunately it doesn't fix things (REAPER v3.75 x86 on Windows 7 x64).

1. Don't forget to reset/delete your host plugin blacklist, if PG-8X crashed before.
2. Delete the pg8x subfolder in your plugin directory, so pg8x.dll can build a new folder while loading.
3. Try to load PG-8X in another host, e.g. Tobybear Minihost (http://www.phreque.com/tobybear/minihost.zip)

Thanks for letting me know.

Are you running the 32bit version of Cubase 5 on 64bit Win7? This combination caused problems before. I am currently trying to fix the problem, but it looks like a trickey one, especially since it only occurs on some combinations of host and operating system...

Regards,
Martin

The latset version is crashing my Cubase 6 32bit
I forgot 32bit Win7
Thanks for letting me know, cevin. Could you tell me more about the crash? Do you get some error message, or is Cubase just quitting or freezing?

Cheers,
Martin

I am away on holiday right now, so not much time to work on the plugin...

But, I think I have found the fix to the reported crashes/freezes of Reaper and Cubase. I just want to clean up some things and prepare for some future updates (more voices, better sysex support including sending sysex). I will post as soon as have a new version.

All the Best,

Martin

Back from holidays...

A new version which -- hopefully -- will fix the Cubase and Reaper crashes will come soon. In fact, I just need to test the new version myself on some hosts.

Martin.

Dear All,

just to notify you that I uploaded a new version (1.02) of pg8x. This should hopefully fix the Cubase/Reaper problem.

Please let me know whether it does (or whether it introduces some new bugs...).

Please note that this version is not fully patch-compatible with the previous versions. It looses the information on the key-assignment (i.e. poly/unison/mono). All other parameters are read correctly.

I am working now on an improved sysex system, which will allow to read and write JX8P sysex data, and hence provides a way of storing patches independent of the host (important for VST3 hosts, as I was told).

Cheers,
Martin

Wonderful!
We appreciate your effort on this great synth!

I have just quickly tried the new version, and it works like a charm in REAPER on both Windows XP x86 and Windows 7 x64. :)

is there a mailing list or another way of being updated with the latest versions and changes?
is there an alternative to paypal for donating, it isn't yet available in my country?
