Does anyone know what the difference is between SampleTank 2.5.5 and SampleTank 2.5 XL?

I already own 2.5.5.

Post

Probably some bug fixes. If there's a news item on KVR it would say but not sure there is.

Had a great boost in the last 24 hours. Getting closer to the next tier!

I think the difference is in the XL, and that's all.

I probably should check with Brian or IK support if I can't find the answer on-line.

The "2.5.5" refers to the version of the SampleTank engine, meaning the program itself.

The "XL" refers to the library that you get. The "XL" is the big one that theoretically has just about everything. There's also a smaller "L" version, which has a decent library but not as much as the "XL".

On top of those main commercial versions, there are also "XT" and "SampleTank Free" versions that have extremely limited sound sets included.

The trick is that the SampleTank program (the engine) is pretty much the same regardless - perhaps needing a downloaded patch to get you up to date with any bug fixes.

The key thing to understand about all five of these "programs": what you're REALLY buying is the sound library rather than the program itself.

Squids and I used to debate this one in past group buys, as I have owned all five programs for years and have never "used" any of them except SampleTank. I simply load the sounds from the other programs and keep them all under one roof.

The sound libraries from all of these instruments, plus all the extra expansion libraries, will play in any current version of SampleTank - including SampleTank Free.

It doesn't work the other way around - you can't load SampleMoog sounds into Sonik Synth, you can't load the various Latin grooves packages into SampleTron, etc, etc. But absolutely all of them work in SampleTank.

So now that SampleTank Free is out there (and also with XT available with any of the XPansionTanks from IK), you don't have to buy a full version of SampleTank to use the extra goodies like the bonus libraries. Just download SampleTank Free from IK and you're all set.

And that means that now more than ever, the reason to buy SampleTank XL is simply for the XL library - not the program. (For anyone completely new to these instruments, take a good look at the Sonik Synth library. It's the biggest of the bunch, and many of us really like a lot of the instruments.)

Thanks for info.

I don't think I'm motivated to buy XL when I already bought 2.5.5.

I might go for Miroslav, though.

Would be nice if 2.5.5 owners could get an attractive upgrade to the XL library without needing to spend full price for XL.

Might I recommend that you take a good look at Sonik Synth 2 ?

It has a HUGE sound library - much larger than SampleTank and covering all the basics PLUS adding a lot more along the lines of synth/electronic sounds - featuring lots of vintage sounds *including* a pretty good set of Mellotron-related stuff.

Throw in that you'd get an extra library (at least one - probably more to come) of your choice as a free bonus, and it ought to be a pretty good expansion option.

Again, you can load the Sonik Synth sounds plus your bonus library sounds into SampleTank, so you don't even have to install the extra program.

For anyone looking to get in on one of these group buy deals but not sure which program to get, Sonik Synth is a well-rounded choice.

$99 is an attractive upgrade price. Keep in mind that XL used to be $499 at one point. It's a great deal in this promo. But Miroslav is a must-have as well.

Good points Torgo.

Ah, you KNEW I'd be around this thread sooner or later, right?

Bummer that I already have all five programs (multiple copies of a few of them) already and close to every library on the bonus list.

On the plus side, I can probably help answer a lot of questions. I'll hang around and check in from time to time.

And who knows, if the deal gets too hot to resist, I just might pick up yet another license for one of the programs as a present for that young nephew of mine...

Good to see that eSoundz is now able to carry the upgraded "2" versions of those expansion libraries (Piano Collection 2, Symphony Strings 2, Omnisynth 2) rather than just the older v1's.

Before I call it a night, I'll go ahead and throw in my first (hopefully useful) recommendations for this thread.

I'm a certified Mellotron freak, and have been ever since I got to noodle around with an otherwise neglected M-400 in the '80s. So for anyone new to these IK Multimedia instruments who might be thinking about SampleTron...

First - if you're not all that familiar with Mellotrons and related instruments, take the time to learn about them before buying SampleTron or ANY Mellotron-related program or sound library. Mellotrons aren't for everyone.

If you don't absolutely know for sure that Mellotrons are your thing, do NOT get SampleTron. (That part always makes Squids cringe. But here's the silver lining:)

Get Sonik Synth 2 instead.

The sound library in Sonik Synth includes a GREAT starter collection of Mellotron sounds. It has pretty much all the "classics" - the Strawberry Fields Forever flutes, the Nights In White Satin strings, etc. If you're not a Tron-freak, it probably has all the Mellotron you'll ever really need.

And it also has a massive library of pianos, organs, guitars, basses, drums, orchestral instruments, vintage synths, etc, etc, etc. The 'Tron stuff is really just a bonus, but it's probably sufficient 'Tron coverage for something like 95% of potential users. So you end up getting the 'Trons you want plus everything else under the sun for the same price as the larger, unneeded 'Tron package.

On the other hand, if you KNOW that you're hopelessly hooked on the Mellotron sound, want more More MORE frames to choose from (never mind the bloody cowbell - we need more MELLOTRON!) and think all those chirps, clicks and warbles are your own personal slice of heaven, then by all means you absolutely MUST get SampleTron.

I've played the Mike Pinder library on my old Akai hardware sampler. I've played other libraries, M-Tron, and 'Tron sounds on other "real" and virtual instruments.

The SampleTron program is the second best thing that has ever happened for computer-based 'Tron lovers. You want it. You really do.

And the BEST thing ever for 'Tron freaks is the "Squids Tron Collection (vol 1)". It came out long before SampleTron. Many of its sounds were included in SampleTron, but it's not a complete overlap - Squids Tron has stuff not in SampleTron, and SampleTron has stuff not in Squids Tron.

The sweet part is that this deal has already hit the first free bonus library, and if you check the full list of bonus choices, you'll find "Squids Tron Exclusive Extras" is included as an option.

So... if you don't have any of the IK Multimedia instruments, the way to play this deal would be to:

(1) download SampleTank Free from the IK Multimedia web site. Install it in your host of choice, resolving any technical issues that might arise. You'll want the SampleTank engine, and getting the free one lets you know there won't be any show-stopping problems before you spend a dime.

(2) get SampleTron through eSoundz as your (first) purchased Group Buy program. And rather than installing it, I recommend just copying its sound library into your SampleTank instruments section.

(3) choose "Squids Tron Exclusive Extras" as your (first) bonus sample library.

It has all the sounds from the Squids Tron Collection (vol 1) that were not included in SampleTron. So with this as your bonus library, you now have the full set. Pretty freaking sweet for $99. Copy it into your SampleTank instruments section, and you're all set - you have the full collection, all available within one program.

(The reason for using SampleTank rather than the SampleTron interface is that the Squids Tron Exclusive Extras library won't work in SampleTron. But both libraries will work in SampleTank. That way you only need to install and run one program to play them all. It makes browsing for the right sound a lot easier.)

And a side note for Squids... isn't it about freaking time you got around to Squids Tron Collection Vol 2 ??

Post

For anyone who failed to notice, torgo really like Tron sounds! And he really like Squid's Tron sounds! :D

Can someone please provide a link to a side-by-side comparison of SampleTank 2.5.5 sounds versus SampleTank 2.5 XL sounds?

Not sure how to answer that, as "2.5.5" refers to the engine and not the library. For that matter, I'm not even familiar with v2.5.5 other than for SampleTank Free. I show 2.5.4 as the current version.

Can you tell us more about your 2.5.5? Like where you ordered it, the size of the sound library that came with it, etc?
