Or a more specific question that would clear everything up quickly... it sounds like what you have is SampleTank Free 2.5.5.
Does this match the list of sounds that you have?

I won't be able to check until later today/this evening. It's still early morning here.
I have free and I also own the paid version of SampleTank that has sounds from all the various synths from IK. The free version has different sounds from 2.5.5. The reason I know it's 2.5.5 is because that's what it says when I press the I (info) button.
I'll check again later to verify just in case I'm mixing up the versions.
In my IK account, I have both versions listed, plus some other Amplitube stuff.

Okay, that explains part of it. I think it's the Free version that's showing you the 2.5.5, as that's the version number of the SampleTank Free engine.
(I don't know of any difference between it and the 2.5.4 engine in the other versions except for a different authorization routine in the Free one.)
The more important question as far as upgrades go would be which version you bought. The program itself is exactly the same for all of them - and also the same as your SampleTank Free. The only difference would be in the sound library that came with it.
When you ordered it, there were probably some letters after the name - most likely XL or L.
XL library = 6.4 gig
L library = 2.1 gig
XT = not sold on its own, but comes included with XpansionTank libraries sold by IK.
LE = not sold on its own, but used to come with the older versions of ExpansionTank libraries. LE was discontinued in favor of XT, but physical copies of the older Expansion Tank sets are still floating around out there in music stores. (Note the older ones spelled it "Expansion", starting with "E", while the new ones that come with XT spell it "Xpansion".) Those older sets are getting hard to find, but it's still possible that someone might buy one and inadvertently get LE.
SampleTank Free is the one with sample sounds from all five instruments. (SampleTank XT also had a demo sound set that had sounds from the five instruments and a few from the various XpansionTanks.)
The libraries from all five instruments will work in SampleTank, so any of them would expand your available sound library. That was really the whole point of the teaser library for XT - to get us to try out the sounds so that we'd hopefully buy the other instruments.
If you're looking for a "general" upgrade, I still think you should look at Sonik Synth. That library has over 8 gig of samples. I don't see a full list readily available, but here's a general idea:

Let us know later when you find out which SampleTank library you already have.

144! Almost half way to the next tier! That means yet ANOTHER free library and this time including a special twist!
Keep spreading the word? Anyone who posts a thread on a forum about the eSoundz Hot Buy Group Buy in the next 48 hours gets $5 in epointz from Allen and I as a thank you for making the effort. You have to include this link in the thread: http://www.esoundz.com/news1.php?nbr=5999 and then post the link to your thread here in this one or alert Allen or I to it. Maximum of 3 per person ($15 in epointz) to be fair. Your thread can't be deleted though so work it in tastefully and in the appropriate section or style. Remember you CAN also put your esoundz name in your posts to pick up referral epointz from others as well. Could even earn enough to practically get a free library with epointz. Many have! Good luck and thanks for helping.

I agree completely with torgo. Sonik Synth 2 comes with an awesome library of sounds. In addition to the mellotron sounds torgo mentioned, there are some great arps, moogs, Rhodes, and clavs in there. Lots and lots of useful instruments and sounds.torgo wrote:Musical Gym wrote:Would be nice if 2.5.5 owners could get an attractive upgrade to the XL library without needing to spend full price for XL.
Might I recommend that you take a good look at Sonik Synth 2 ?
It has a HUGE sound library - much larger than SampleTank and covering all the basics PLUS adding a lot more along the lines of synth/electronic sounds - featuring lots of vintage sounds *including* a pretty good set of Mellotron-related stuff.
Throw in that you'd get an extra library (at least one - probably more to come) of your choice as a free bonus, and it ought to be a pretty good expansion option.
Again, you can load the Sonik Synth sounds plus your bonus library sounds into SampleTank, so you don't even have to install the extra program.
For anyone looking to get in on one of these group buy deals but not sure which program to get, Sonik Synth is a well-rounded choice.

I did a quick look over at the Cakewalk forums and didn't see anything there about the group buy, so I started one here:

Hopefully I didn't duplicate a post elsewhere.

Really nice sounds. Thanks for all the help and info.
Whether I participate in the GB or not, my interest in IK products has been renewed. I don't think I've spent much time with them. One reason is probably that I can barely read the GUI. I increased my screen resolution to accommodate, and it was then readable, but not acceptable for normal use.
The interfaces must have been designed back when 800x600 was common.

SampleTank SE (special edition) - used to come as a package with specific sound cards or other hardware tools. I think it has been discontinued with the release of SampleTank Free, or at least changed.
Out of curiosity, how large is the sound library that came with yours? Also, what product did it come bundled with, or did you find it sold as a stand-alone product?
You'd probably be better off using the 2.5.5 engine in SampleTank Free to play the sounds from both versions. But yeah, if you have too much trouble reading the text in the interface, that's a real problem.

Looks like the contents of the SE folder is only 304 mb.
It's been so long now that I don't recall what the deal was on SE other than it's in my account and authorized. Perhaps it was set "free" at some point awhile back. I don't remember making a purchase for it. Now that I think of it, it could have come with the Tracktion 3 Ultimate Bundle. I think that was it.
Thanks for tip on playing SE sounds with ST free.

I believe SE was indeed part of the Tracktion 3 Ultimate Bundle (as well as other bundle offerings).
It was typically included with sets like that as a teaser to demonstrate SampleTank's features (the built-in effects, the engine's stretching capabilities, etc), obviously trying to entice you to buy the full package.
As far as the sounds go, ST XL or Sonik Synth would both be major expansions to the sound library. I think you'd be pretty impressed with either one. Some of the libraries from Sonic Reality (the ones being offered as the extra bonuses in this group buy) are pretty sweet too.
Unfortunately, the problem you're having reading the interface is a definite show-stopper. The other instruments have slightly different looks to their interfaces, but they're generally similar. I'd guess that you'd have the same problem with all of them. Sorry to hear about that...

I really like SS2. It has sounds that fit well in a mix. It reminds me of a keyboard rompler.

In case you don't know, you can adjust the color of the GUI if that helps any. I know I find the red difficult..but light grey is much better! One reason is probably that I can barely read the GUI.
+1 for Sonik Synth too. Crazy amount of sounds in that package.

Looks like a lot of folks agree with my earlier recommendation of Sonik Synth 2.
Once upon a time, you almost HAD to take SampleTank over SS2 because the other libraries (all the bonus choices in this group buy) would only play in the SampleTank interface.
Now that IK has made the engine readily available via SampleTank Free, the choice between ST and SS2 really comes down to the library of sounds. They're both good sets that offer a well-rounded collection of instruments, so it's a tough call.
My take is that the SS2 library is about 25% larger than the ST XL library. There's a little more being offered, particularly in the area of synth/keyboard sounds.
I kinda have a feeling that by mid-May, the key question for newcomers will be very different:
If (or more likely WHEN) this deal explodes to six or more bonus choices, would you go with either of ST/SS, or would you skip both of them and go for Miroslav instead, using the bonus choices to build your broader SampleTank library?
If I didn't own any of the instruments (I have them all, and most of the bonus choices too), I'd probably start out with Miroslav Philharmonik.
That program combined with the stuff in the SampleTank Free library plus a combination of choices like Omnisynth, World Instruments, Piano, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Guitars and Acoustic Drums would make one heck of a general sound library.

Or for my fellow 'Tron addicts...
If we hit 600+ sales (for six bonus choices), start with SampleTron plus SampleTank Free (for the interface/engine) and go with Squids Tron Exclusive Extras, Omnisynth 2, Piano, Vintage Keys, Symphony Strings, and World Instruments as the six bonus choices.
For $99, that would rival the keyboard setup Frank Zappa once paid over $300K for in the '80s...
