I had an issue on my 8600gt, mobile nvidia chip. They did finally fix the issue at least for my case but there are plenty of people who still have the issue, both mobile and desktop use. The way I would always replicate it would be to go in to the settings and tell it to not underclock the chip, just always run at max. If you then opened the nvidia monitor to see the frequency, once it downclocked back to the slower speed thats exactly when I would get a dpc spike.

There are some registry hacks out there to turn off the power management so it will always run at full speed. Id check the nvidia forums, like I said one of their driver releases fixed it for me, there may be a beta release you could use.

I updated from GF9500GT to GTX550Ti last week. DPC latency went from 44-250 to 44-490. No pop/crackle/anything though. Win 7 32bit.

Tested thoroughly. I dont use external/recording inputs but even on Live @ 85-90% CPU it did not crackle with playback of the project.

There seems to be far more problems with 460 serie, it has very aggressive power throttling.

Nope, that is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1.

That's strange then. With my desktop, I use the NVideo provided drivers for my GTX460, and before I had that, I used LEGACY(not even supported in Windows 7) drivers for my Radeon X1950XT. And I've never had any latency or spikes issues, etc.

Have you tried having dpc latency checker on for an hour or more? The spikes did not appear so often for me. I also used xperf in the Microsoft Windows Performance Toolkit to find out exactly which driver that was causing the issue. Can't say I've left it on for a full hour(just never timed it, so I may have), but I've had it on for a long time at least once. I've worked in heavy projects of video and music for much longer than that, without glitches. I do pay attention to resource meters, but I have yet to actually see any issues. And really, that's what it comes down to. Even if I were having spikes, it really only matters if it's affecting the work. And it's not. Which is why I wonder if the issue is strictly driver related or something else?

I have seen zero problems with ati drivers.

I wouln;t want to use windows generic drivers cause i'd want full feature control and acceleration!

I can only speak for the card I have, which is the GTX460. Nvidia drivers work fine FOR ME. Before that, I had ATI for years so I can't speak for the past, or for any other card.

Just making sure that's clear for my above posts.

Rest of my system is Intel i5(first generation), 8GB DDR3 Corsair RAM, MSI Mobo(P55), and some SATA drives, Saffire Pro 24, Windows 7 Professional, etc.

Interesting thread! After I replaced the motherboard, hard drive, ram and moved to Win7 64-bit I was surprised when the pops and clicks issue returned. I was blaming it on just about everything BUT the video card but the only common element is this ASUS GeForce 7600 GS video.

So...the damn video card could be the cause of it after all?

Wouldn't THAT be something

I'm not at home at the moment, so I can't say which version exactly, but my card is the PNY "Enthusiast" edition, or something like that. I believe the drivers are whatever the latest from the NVidia site were at the time I put the card in a couple of months ago(three months? Maybe more? Don't remember).

2 series upwards cards can be a bit picky with windows 7 when it comes to DPC. As noted this can change between revisions of the drivers and is an utter PITA at times. The 210's I use are fine and the 570 in my home box is giving no dpc issues at this time, but I have seen some revisions of the drivers play hell in the past.

It does seem to be related to the Physx code (or at least did in past testing) as the ATI drivers don't seem to have these issues... that said I've had issues with the ATI control panel hanging apps in the past which is why I tend to steer clear of them.

I've had a lot of good experiances with the drivers of late through on the ATI side through so it really is a case of whichever works for you.
