I've been on the Cool Edit/Audition path for around 17 years and love it to bits. There's been a lot of negative comments on 5.5 so I just want to balance that as I think it's actually a very strong platform to build on for version 6.

Yes, quite a lot of missing so it depends on what your work flow is. I personally don't miss the lack of MIDI or CD burning as there are better alternatives for that (Studio One!).

I'm missing automation recording (you can add automation manually, which works well but damn fiddly if using the surround panner), various effects, the ability to edit on a per sample basis, the function to save a multitrack session with its files and a few other things, but it's really not bad and the video playback is almost usable now!

I haven't tried the volume tools for batch matching volume across files, which if it works could be great for dialogue editing. The history feature is very useful, as is the new real-time mastering rack for experimenting with effects. It also has a surround convolution effect with a few impulses as part of the package, which is a nice extra. I've also tried the OMF import on a simple project and it worked perfectly.

It's also damn fast, way faster than previously and with some tweaking the GUI can be made closer to the feel of version 3. It also feels well thought out, there are little things like being able to export your settings and preferences without digging through the registry.

Several of the effects can be replaced temporarily with VST equivalents although I would dearly love to see the doppler effect back along with the phase window.

As a complement to version 3, I'm actually impressed, it just needs to mature a little more.

As a complement - yes. As a replacement - no.

I agree that they have made a good foundation for remaking Audition going forward, and the load times, batch processing, etc are SUPER fast. Very impressive.

In terms of speed/efficiency/etc I feel they have moved developmentally ten years forward with this release. But in terms of features they have gone at least ten years backwards.

Perhaps it's rather like when Cubase VST5 was replaced by SX1 ... but more extreme.

Downloaded this afternoon and installed with no dramas.
Initial thoughts are Yes it does load fast. Will try with 10-20 tracks later.

Interface I think was tailored more to Mac users. I don't mind as it looks good on my 54 inch LCD so spanning those multi tracks will be highly visible.

Report back again later. Trying to watch NRL Test football as well.

Seems like this release is a partner for the previous release to provide faster results using a limited feature set (fine if you don't need the missing features for the task in hand - if you do, use the old version). And it fully integrates with Premiere Pro. And it runs on a Mac.

If that's what you need right now, then you'll be pleased.

Otherwise, wait for the next release (12-18 months) which should properly blend the new version with AA3.

It's the foundation for Audition's future - if they'd managed the whole building in one go it would have been better, but even Adobe doesn't have unlimited resources.

In hindsight I guess if it was bloated with all the requested features and bells and whistles I'm sure we would have something to complain about.

If I can mix and master on this alone with a few of my chosen plugs then I should be happy . If it doesn't do what it is intended to do then we should stick with our chosen DAW. If one feels they can get the same results out of say Samplitude, Studio One, Logic or Pro Tools then good luck.

I'll be dropping my 99 usd for the upgrade this week as it's better the devil I know.

We get screwed here in Australia with a much higher upgrade price. I would love to demo it if I didn't have to download a 7gb bundle of other stuff along with it !

Not entirely correct.

If you go on Adobe website click on products and look for Adobe Audition cs5.5.

Looking to the right of the product page you will see Upgrade from 99usd and also try.

Click on try and it will take you to the download trial page. Click on d'load now and it will start with the d'load manager. Then it will either take you to login with user name and P'word or straight to your file.

It's only a 341 mb download. Good Luck and enjoy.

...if you're in Australia, you automatically get routed to the Australian site for downloads etc, and yes the upgrade is a shafting $160 or something.

I just got off the chatline with an Adobe rep and he says that is correct. 99 usd or 160 aud and that is fu'''ing bullshit. Our dollar is parity or better and I'm voting with my feet if I have to do without and they will lose me as a customer.

As much as I want to upgrade I can spend my hard earned on something else like sSpark, Tempest or Kronos. F###k your software Adobe.

I had similar issue when I tried to upgrade to AA3, one price for USA another much higher price for UK. So I never upgraded.

Can't understand how they can justify differential pricing for software downloads. But yes I too voted with my feet / pound.

Started with CoolEdit, loved it, then Adobe got involved, lost sight of what and who the programme was for and marketed it with absurd pricing strategies for ordinary mortals (which is what they do with all their creative tools - price them so that only pros and rich semi-pros can reach them). It is now so far behind the curve on too many fronts to be worth the money, as far as I am concerned.

I was an early user of Logic when it was still available on PCs, but lost the programme when the license keys got mysteriously eaten by my system. Again, Logic might be good too, but if the price of admission is a Mac (i.e. one more laptop), then forget it.

I wish Audition would focus on the big market, make it feature rich and price it so that ordinary people with day jobs could get into it.

As audio editors go, it is still a lot cheaper than Wavelab, which is the next best. It's also cheaper than Peak on the mac. I think it costs just a little more than Soundforge (though street prices very) but is a lot nicer imho. Sure there are freeware alternatives, but Audition is a LOT slicker than any of them. So I don't think the pricing is unreasonable in terms of base price.

What I do think is questionable is charging such a differential between one country and another.

By the way, after further testing I must say that the Match Volume and Batch Processing tools are superb and for me make the upgrade far more tempting...

In another 12-18 months Adobe will put back all the stuff from V3 and then charge another 99usd-160 aud . It's obvious that the Syntrillium workers that were given jobs at Adobe have no input.

So far I have had 2 blue screen of death crashes on my Dell 1530 xps lappie which also houses everything from Maschine, Kontrol S4 to Reason 5/ Record 1.5, Studio One Pro.
Will try on my 64 bit os production machine and /or another laptop.

So is this thing stable yet. I don't think so. Keep your customers happy first Adobe and the shareholders will be happy.
