Mono-ing and stereo-ing are fine as they are not modulators and will not transform the synth to become unrecognizable as per the rules.ebow wrote:how does using effects such as stereo spread and mono-ising fit into this ??
so far i have used a few instances of 'gain', in logic, to convert some of the stereo sounds (bass, kick) to mono...is this allowed ??
i have also used 'stereo spread', also in logic, to widen the spread of one of the sounds...allowed ??

I submitted a piece: http://soundcloud.com/mike-leghorn/isle-of-the-dead .
Do I need to do anything more? This piece uses about 30 instances of Tyrell, and a freeware reverb. Wish me luck!

i didn't think it would be a problem, per se, but it was more about whether i could use the logic native plugs to do itV'ger wrote:Mono-ing and stereo-ing are fine as they are not modulators and will not transform the synth to become unrecognizable as per the rules.ebow wrote:how does using effects such as stereo spread and mono-ising fit into this ??

thanks for the clarification

Ah yes missed that part, but no, only EQ can be used of the host effects.
Cheers, but check the rules here. Straight off I can see the naming is not correct, and FX should be specified (which exact reverb did you use, host as well). You used no EQ or dynamics?mleghorn wrote:I submitted a piece: http://soundcloud.com/mike-leghorn/isle-of-the-dead .

Oops! I renamed it to "Isle of the Dead - mleghorn", but kept the same "permalink" (I hope that's OK).V'ger wrote:Cheers, but check the rules here. I used 31 instances of Tyrell. Host was Sonar X1 Studio. I used one effect: HybridReverb2 by Christian Borss, which is available for free at http://www2.ika.rub.de/HybridReverb2
I used volume envelopes at the end for a gradual fade out.
I'll tag the song appropriately, tonight, when I get home from my "day job".

this brings up another point i wished to raise...strictly speaking, the idea is that the effects that are used are available to everyonemleghorn wrote:I used one effect: HybridReverb2 by Christian Borss, which is available for free at http://www2.ika.rub.de/HybridReverb2
.
the problem is that many freeware fx aren't available to mac owners...i have been making sure that the fx i have been using for this are cross-platform
i understand for windows users this is somewhat limiting, but then that's the essence of the challenge - working within certain limits....
perhaps, it might be an idea for any future cross-platform challenges to also be limited to fx that are cross-platform
thoughts ?

Despite Mac-ers supposed power and malware advantage, the larger plugin selection for Win-ers is definitely a point to skew things so for cross platform synths should be ditto FX, agree. Should've done it with this one as you've raised it before, but plain old forgot. Next one.

I'm having serious CPU issue with this plugin. Some patches are going up to 70% CPU. I was just trying it in MiniHost. Anyone facing the same problem?

Yes this thing gobbles CPU like few other synths, but switch to mono or duo if you can and bounce or sample.

My pentium i5 laptop (with 4GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bit) handles 30 instances of Tyrell with no problem. I'm using Sonar X1 Studio.satYatunes wrote:I'm having serious CPU issue with this plugin. Some patches are going up to 70% CPU. I was just trying it in MiniHost. Anyone facing the same problem?

That's amazing, could it really be that the 64 bit synth + system is so much more efficient?

I'm not sure what it is. I've found that my new (i.e. 9-month old) i5 laptop handles many instances of Ace with no problem, even the 32-bit version of Ace (in 64-bit host), while my previous computer (same make, i.e. Gateway laptop, with 64-bit capable Intel processor) using Vista 32-bit choked on a couple instances of Ace.V'ger wrote:That's amazing, could it really be that the 64 bit synth + system is so much more efficient?
