COMPassion is red (obviously, because it is the color of LOVE)...
green is the Fabulous compressor that the Mod is similar to...
(all relevant parameters as close as possible)

You care to inform me the clueless one which compressor the fab mod is referring to....
One thing i am wondering though, what you see here is the harmonic distortion caused right. I thought the mods were mainly there to change the character of the attack release and slopes etc and not so much to add harmonic distortion. Or are the harmonics in this case caused by the compressors response?

if you can't FILTER through my posts and find what comp the FABulous mod is, you need more coffee...Exhile wrote:You care to inform me the clueless one which compressor the fab mod is referring to....![]()
i think they all add harmonic content, but how much and where in the spectrum differs...(i think,,,from my limited knowledge?)

Yeah ok so that was easy enough and confirmed my suspicionsbezusheist wrote:if you can't FILTER through my posts and find what comp the FABulous mod is, you need more coffee...Exhile wrote:You care to inform me the clueless one which compressor the fab mod is referring to....![]()

yeah, sorry, i didn't realize you could change the mode at first,,,i just downloaded it now to play around...
this is Opto mode...

and Classic...

(i think it's choppy because the FFT size was too big/time avg. maybe? but you get the idea...)

I actually think the response on the Fab mod sounds more similar to the classic mide in the Fab compressor

Hey Dave,
Have you considered user-configurable ranges for the threshold/ratio/attack/release knobs in the main section of COMPassion? If you could save/recall the min/max values for the knobs in a Mod, then mods could be set up even more specifically for tasks (e.g. a mastering comp probably does not need negative compression ratios). After recalling the mod, if you did not want the constraints, having a 'Free' mode button would unconstrain all the knobs. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

Yeah, he's fine, we've just been busy dealing with the interest in Compassion, making new things and listening to psyche funk. I'm also trying to persuade him of the value of the outside world, he's still pretty reluctant, but I think he's giving it consideration. We're reading and discussing the points - big respect to the measurement crew, thanks!
I'd be more concerned about his wellbeing if he was spending too much time on KVR.

My legs are agony. Krzysztof had me walking up hills for a week. It was brutal.
Allow me to paint a mental picture for you, if I may:
Take one standard nerd, who's been hiding in a cave for months.
Drag him out into the countryside and march him around, without appropriate footwear, for a week.
Return standard nerd to his cave to recuperate.
That's been my absence. The funk was pretty good too. Also, we may have accidentally a new plugin... but I'll not say more on that just yet. You know how it is sometimes.
I'm going to work my way through my mailbox first, and then answer questions on here.
Also, as a favour, can everyone email me rather than DM me?
I do my best to stay organised with correspondence (of which there's a fair volume), and with email, I do almost OK. Unfortunately, there's no way of structuring my KVR DMs, so I've decided that I'm going to ignore them wholesale, because there's a 90% chance I'll do so accidentally. I'm going to make it 100%. If there's a way of forwarding DMs to email, do let me know.
A bit snowed under, and in a small amount of physical pain,
Dave.

I still cant figure out the transient section. I just want to add a little snap à la transient designer. Is that even possible?

Sure. Keep Max at about 3dB, use the default timings, and bring up attack a touch.Exhile wrote:I still cant figure out the transient section. I just want to add a little snap à la transient designer. Is that even possible?

First thing you really need to know is that measuring harmonic patterns is not a good way of identifying compressors. To really get into it, run sinewaves at different levels (one above threshold, one below, then silence) in, so you can see the attack/release shapes (this is what the transient response graph shows you). Next run in sinewaves at different levels, so you can see the compression shape. What a compressor does to a sinewave isn't as interesting as what it does to transients, so that's what you want to measure.
In any case, a compressors output is input*gr, and that inherently generates harmonics. You've a lot of control over how much that goes on; FIR Smooth, VCA Smooth, RMS time... all these reduce the level of the harmonics.
If we learn anything from compassion, it's that the transient and dynamic response really is the heart of what's going on, and while measuring harmonics with the thing set to minimum timings gives us A graph, it doesn't give us a GOOD graph. Nor any real insight into what's going on.
Dave.
