You can check its output in a DAW that shows volume in decibels.

Hey JPQ,
Lots of limiter plug-ins will give you a peak read-out of your signal in db, that should give you a good number to use for headroom or summing numbers.
The T-RackS system has VERY precise tools for this and the EXCELLENT Metering module is available as a stand-alone package for under $40 usd. Its also great for getting a look at what your full mixes are doing in terms of phase, frequency balance and perceived loudness.
