This is this "ducking-mode" found with eg. the Sonalksis gate. Unfortunately not but this would be a great feature!shamann wrote:Does this have an inverted mode (mutes input above threshold, lets pass everything below)?

I'm guessing the pad sound was a little hot, so it was triggering the gate to open even with the threshold at unity. Easiest way to fix this is to open the Expert panel and turn down the two sidechain gain controls to the left: turning the sidechain gain down by 36dB is the same as turning the threshold up by 36dB... I imagine your string pad probably doesn't hit +36dB before the fader!ttoz wrote: With short attack and release, full hard knee, threshold 0 and maximum ratio and reduction, the gate was STILL letting a little of the sustained string pad through, unpredictably too
Or of course you could adjust your overall gain structure. Its unlikely that a pad sound would need to be that loud in the mix, so I'm guessing you must have been running the channel fader fairly low. If you turn down the main volume on the synth instead (or wherever makes most sense in your processing chain) then run the channel fader higher you can avoid many other problems as well.

I knew that somebody would have a problem with the MIDI gating, which is why I in the last minute asked FabFilter to include a specific MIDI gate preset. Here is what you need to do to get solid midi gating:ttoz wrote:I am sure FF will implement it as they seem very open to improving and adding things to their products with point releases.bmanic wrote:Unfortunately not! But it is a great idea and you should definitely mention it on their forum. It should be quite easy to implement.shamann wrote:Does this have an inverted mode (mutes input above threshold, lets pass everything below)?
You can do it yourself as well but it'll take two tracks. Simply phase reverse the gated track and send it to the original. Boom.. instant mutes of the stuff that the gate lets through and pass through of everything else.
Cheers!

A bit disappointed in the price, and midi gating was very difficult to get going which is something i was very excited about.
With short attack and release, full hard knee, threshold 0 and maximum ratio and reduction, the gate was STILL letting a little of the sustained string pad through, unpredictably too
I went insane trying to figure this out then adjusted internal sidechain to something stupid like 5HZ and that solved it. Still, this is something that should be fixed and there should be a choice in midi mode to completely have NO signal whatsoever, a complete bypass, unless notation data is received.
Now IF there is a way to do that I am sorry, but the latest mac installer was funky and when i clicked help in Pro G menu the OSX help viewed gave me an error message.
Anyway, midi gate behaved unpredictably, and that's not good enough for this price tag
Select "classic" gating mode.
Set attack, release, hold and knee to zero (or to taste, but for extremely fast gating, you need zero here)
Threshold to 0dB (a midi trigger completely bypasses the normal threshold, sending a 0dB spike into the detector)
Range to maximum (or whatever you need it at)
Ratio 10:1 or more
Now the important part! Open up the expert panel and turn down the sidechain VOLUME knobs, all the way to -36dB. This ensures that the actual audio you are gating doesn't accidentally trigger the gate.
Route your midi track to the gate.. paint some notes. Boom. Midi gating, defined by note length. With the above settings, it should even be pretty damn accurate and predictable.
Having said that, I agree with you. There should be a dedicated MIDI trigger mode, where audio can not trigger the gate. It's easy to implement and I'm sure FabFilter will include one in an update.
Cheers!

i would much prefer the midi gate to work like in refx nexus.
you do not need to do any routing, work on a separate midi track. it is all inside the vst's interface, you can paint the notes in the gate mode like an arp.

Yea but what do you do when you want to gate something that doesn't come with a built-in gate? Like a voice or a acoustic instrument?

honestly, i do not understand your question
no matter what sound, if you did it the way it is implemented on nexus, you could just insert pro-g and paint the midi notes in pro-g itself. shouldn't that work all the time?

Sounds like you want a dedicated trancegate plugin. Not a Gate plugin that accepts midi as a sidechain source.cyphersuit wrote:honestly, i do not understand your questionno matter what sound, if you did it the way it is implemented on nexus, you could just insert pro-g and paint the midi notes in pro-g itself. shouldn't that work all the time?

I think there's a pretty big difference. This is a classic gate with the ability to use MIDI as a "sidechain" input. Using MIDI, you can set make the gate open whenever you want at any point in the project. A trancegate usually repeats the same gating every 4, 8, 16 bars. I don't think FabFilter is after the second model--what they've done in this plugin seems pretty unique from the YouTube tutorial.
An aside:
FabFilter should change their bundling scheme so that you could buy one bundle with all of the Pro-* series. Instead, they have a mixing and a mastering bundle which both seem incomplete to me.

Loving Pro-g what I've been missing for a long time...
Looking forward to what Camel are intending to do with updates to CamelSpace and CamelPhat
And the price in my basket was a no brainer...haven't explored the midi trigger yet so thanks for the walkthrough b-Manic very helpful my friend.

125 bones for a gate..........er, well, I'm still interested. Much more research needed though. (yes of course I know about the demo
)
The vid I saw doesn't seem to cover "basic" gating needs (like toms) but I'm guessing it's pretty good at that too
