OK, just to pass the time, and in the same line as previous topics:

What classic (as in "old") SF movie(s) is/are your favorite ?? I will start with mine.

Soilent Green (I still think it describes a future we might be heading for).
1984 (the scene with the ratcage left me speachless for an hour).

Anyone else ?

ET because it is the first one I saw
I liked V as well ... it developed my appetite for living mice <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />

Ok …serious …. My favourite ones are Species / Alien
12 monkeys (can I count that one in or are we talking about SF with the star ships and stuff)

And of course the starwars trilogy

Has to be Bladerunner for me (the directors cut version). Just checked and suprised it was made way back in 82. Still find it a stunning and emotional experience to watch.

There are many I really liked (today's just seem not quite as deep and more like effect shows than anything else...)

But my all-time-favourite is Wolfgang Petersen's "Enemy mine".
(I wonder if it got any attention outside
of Germany, though.) Great story plot, great
actors and a "deeper meaning"...

Secondly, I'd vote for "Dune". Yes the book is
better, but for a movie based on such a complex
book, it was excellent.

Transformers - The Movie. An epic tale of Good Vs. Evil, Hope and Despair all set to the backdrop of the best soundtrack ever to appear in an animated film (thanks to the great Stan Bush).
I still cry when Optimus Prime dies... the pain...

Forbidden Planet anyone ?????
Wait !! classic or old ???? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

the matrix is very old
plato wrote the script <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />

In the "old" category I like Forbidden Planet. And there's a good music story behind that movie too. If you know the soundtrack you'll recall that it is full of blips and squeaks and heavily effected elctronic sounds like a broken Absynth. The music industry/soundtrack body (sorry, can't recall the acronym) was so horrified at its non-musical and totally synthesised approach that it refused to allow the movie to be released unless the credit for "soundtrack" was replaced with a credit for "electronic tonalities".

Anyway, back OT, another old favourite is a terribly named, but incredibly stylish and well-plotted Italian movie called The Space Vampires. It's not as corny as it sounds, has a great twist at the end and is very moody. The look and feel is much like the outdoor planet scenes in Alien and Aliens. And being Italian the space suits are impressive: full body black leather !

In a more modern context my favourite is Dark Star. It is basically a black comedy, but it has several real highlights. First the soundtrack is pure ANALOG synth. Yep, drones and LFOs. Impressive stuff and a must for analog synth fans - no other soundtrack comes close. Second reason I like it is because it obeys all the laws of space. No warp drives, miraculous worm holes or whooshing jet sounds. The real stuff. Very clever script too.

Eek! Better stop <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

...and when optimus prime passes on the matrix to hot-rod, the music makes me tingle.

I agree. A lot of sc-fi movies have amazing concepts but never really deliver on the story or the dialog, and usually fall back to FX wizardry to carry them...

Yeah, Enemy Mine is pretty much considered a B movie or even a C movie over here. I enjoyed it though, and found it worthwhile to watch (I'd recommend at least seeing it once).

Which version of Dune are you referring to. The 1984 film by David Lynch or the 2000 version by John Harrison?

I didn't really enjoy the Lynch version... He cut out too many important bits - but of course you'd have to, to make it into a feature film. Luckily the 2000 version put back a lot of the cultural elements that Lynch omitted, and the characters weren't quite as "excessively hyped".

I'm surprised Dune ever got made into a film because most of the story was told through the character's thoughts rather than by what they actually said...

And of course, the book was fantastic... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" />

In No particular order

Dark City

13th Floor

Matrix

City of Lost Children - f**ked up film!

Salute of the Jugger

Enemy Mine

Blade Runner

THX1932 (or whatever the numbers are... it was G Lucas' student film...)

I would stand all night in the rain to get tickets to see 'A scanner Darkly' IF (and I mean big capitals here...) it is made properly. That is a hell of a book. I was thinking the other day that 'The Left Hand of Darkness' would make a hell of a film - whatcha think?
