I can only speak for myself. It is a bit outdated but remains a classic. I first saw it when it came out and thought the same "what the hell was that all about". I then read the book...
Don't forget this was pre moon landings.
Part of the story, an ancient intelligence in space had visited Earth and placed an object on the moon for us to discover and then the gov'nt covering it up to keep it secret. Like what gov's do today!
A computer H.A.L. (the next letters down from I.B.M), goes mad and trys to abort the mission.
Dave gets reborn as a child of the universe and seeks out the Earth (in the book anyway).
No sound in space hence the music.
If you think that was hard to understand try "Solaris" the Russian 2001.

Anyone ever see the movie "12 Monkeys" was originally based on, the old French movie "Le Jette"...?
I've never seen it, but know a few who have and I'm really curious about it: appearently it's all done as a series of black-and-white stills....but the story-line was fairly close to Gilliam's "12 Monkeys" (which I must say was one film that just had my brain going a zillion miles an hour afterwards, as did "Brazil").

I'll not repeat all of the classics already mentioned to spare you the repetition. Looking at the Sci-Fi genre as a whole over the past ten years though, I'd have to say that I think it was Contact that impressed me the most. It was intelligent, patient, character driven and didn't rely on violent and cliche human vs. aliens special effects such as movies like ID4 (gack!). I have a lot of respect for A.I. as well and feel that it was largely misunderstood by many.

I actually thought that 'Minority Report' was pretty good... I can do without Tom Cruise of course, and Spielberg's overly "hammy" bits, but it was fairly well done.
I also liked 'Signs' (although, not really a sci-fi movie per se)... It wasn't amazing or anything, but it was definitely worth the price of admission...

I liked the explanation Clarke gave for why HAL went nuts in "2010"...the book, not the movie (which I felt was OK, but kinda lame and could've been done better).

Hmm, I claim to be a fan of Sci-fi but I hardly watch anything anymore!
Alien
- the original was so moody and grim, I liked the way everything was not shiny and white
Aliens
- Pure acton all the way - My fave sequence is actually the drop-ship landing! Yay!
Dune
- I like the epic nature of this film and the trippyness of it all. Love the mixture (juxtaposition) of high technolgy with almost Victorian looking costumes and architecture. I read all the books after seeing this. Oh, like the music to!
I'm sure there are others but these are the ones that spring to mind.
What I am waiting for is a film based on Arthur C. Clarks 'Rama' series of books. The most incredible story I ever read perhaps except for the Dune series. I did hear it was in the making. Anybody?
EDIT! Damn I forgot 'Contact' I love this film... not quite true to the book but close enough.

The "Rama" series would make excellent movies, I agree!!
But what I'm REALLY waiting for is for them to finally make a movie of Larry Niven's "Ringworld" series...!! I've heard rumors that th idea was being shopped around, but...
(hmmm...I can almost imagine Jackie Chan as Louie Wu. Well, OK, maybe not.... )

By far it has to be Forbidden Planet. The Efx are still fresh today.Number 2 is "Creeping Terror".That movie is soooo bad that it is actually good.It was filmed as a Sci-Fi movie but turned into a comedy because it was so terrible.Number 3:Any movie done by Mystery Science Theatre 3000.Any Misties out there?

Another candidate tmo: Asimov's Robot series
About the connection between HAL and IBM, it even inspired the name "Windows NT"

MST3K....YES!!!! I collect all of the older "Joel" era shows. My wife and I are total MST3K nuts.
Heh...."Fugative Alien", perhaps?
Or perhaps the worst ever, "Monster A-Go-Go"...?
(thought "Manos: The Hands of Fate" was perhaps the all-time worst film ever made, but not really sci-fi)

Yeah, I have a lot of respect for M. Night Shyamalan and Signs was definitely well crafted. It wasn't what I expected though. I was actually kind of disappointed in the direction that it went. Even so, it was brilliantly executed.

The references to SF comedy (space balls) reminded me of another great one: Space Academy (subtitle: Morons from outer space), made by the team from "Not the nine'o clock news" The opening shot throwed me right of my chair with laughing spasms.
Another one really worth mentioning in this regard is The attack of the giant killer tomatos

I watched La Jetée in a theatre. Absolutely one of the visually stunning films. It is totally different from 12 monkeys or brazil. Terry Gilliam developed totally different film out of it. La Jetée is totally dark; it has Eraserhead/Pi kind of atmosphere.
A must see for a visual artist.
