yeah I noticed the switches right away...I was thinking that Marshall first started using them on the valvestates but I doubt susiwong is buying a valvestate (however I had a 15 watt valvestate the sounded really nice)

Partially correct, partially not, you all.
Hink is spot on however - no Valvestate for my Les Paul, ever !
And it's old, not vintage but old.
Better pics tomorrow, promised !
Lol,
susiwong

partially correct because it's obviously a head

Got it, I didn't notice the writing is upside down. 30th Anniversary seems quite old, DSL seems quite new; what's in between?Hink wrote:partially correct because it's obviously a head

Guess that's close enough for rock'n'roll, guys !
It's a 1993 6100 30th Anniversary head, great condition.
Original model, EL34s, non-modded lead channel.
Technically 100% identical to the blue and gold ones.
And despite all the bells and whistles, signal path is pure tubes.

For some nice audio examples go here and enjoy, no, unfortunately that's not me
:
The combos are identical to the top under the hood.
Can't wait till tomorrow, local pickup, trustworthy seller.
Cheers,
susiwong

Bam, pretty much had it on my first guess! I AM THE GEAR JUNKIE!
Man, I wasn't lying when I said I've always wanted one of these. Please let me know how it compares to your other amps.

Lol, true, but I couldn't accept the combo ...Uncle E wrote:Bam, pretty much had it on my first guess! I AM THE GEAR JUNKIE!

I'll report tomorrow.
It was an accident in fact, saw it on eBay, made a pro-forma bet just for fun, couldn't believe it when I shot it for even 50 less ...
I ran into more of these amps lately than was good for my peace of mind, even helped a friend buy one.
I definitely either wanted one of these or a 2203 JMP to keep my 1976 50W Lead (1987 model) company - worked out earlier than planned, that's all.
Cheers,

I'll be curious too but to be honest I very mixed emotions about anything after the 800 but now I also have reasons why I'm likely to stay away from high powered amps. I can't see me ever needing another 100 watt head and a 50 watt is not that much different. Of course I could make another 50 watt head work (another weber) but even that 20 watt egnater rebel is loud enough to gig with and I wont be gigging. (if some place around here started an open jam night like some bars use to on Sundays I might do that though)
I would like to stay with lower wattage but sometimes you have accept higher wattage models to gain the features you want
If I got a jcm 800 all I would do is devalue it anyhow because I would mod the hell out of it (weber has some kits that are not too difficult for mods)
That's why I want an 18 watt Marshall head replica kit from weber (mojo sells them too), the deal is though...build? Or have built? Weber has those mods so you can do what you want to it, but they have techs that will build them as well. I asked for a quote and with the mods I want the price for the amp and assembly was around 800usd which imo isn't bad. If I built one before I even tried to fire it up I would pay a local tech to check it out which means it would probably be closer to 600usd. This is my plan for 'that' time of the year next year, I would feel better aboout having it built but I would feel better about me and it if I built it

btw check out weber's kits
https://taweber.powweb.com/store/kits.htm
look at the classic british 60s kits including an 800 model for 515usd...they also have an orange 100 watt 565usd, a marshall 45 watt 490usd, classic 100 watt 625usd plus a lot more kits of classics
I'm guessing they would charge 4-500 dollars to build the larger ones with a mod or two...handwired. You wont have the 'name' on the amp but you could get as good or probably a better version of re-issues for less than they charge now

Hi Hink,
allow me a few remarks :
- if I were you I'd have a tube amp kit built, just like me you're too green with this stuff, sorry. Tube amps are not error friendly.
Try your ambition with more involved stomp boxes, go to something more advanced, maybe a MIDI looper or whatever, get into modding stomps with your own designs, but leave tube amps to the experts. Ymmv ...
Learn how to bias a tube amp, that's very useful and not too hard.
- imho modding an 800 or other classic is completely pointless.
Not talking about fine tuning.
If you want more/different features get another amp, almost everything can be had nowadays. And decent pro mods cost good money too.
The classics are what they are, leave them to those that appreciate their tone and mod modern amps or replicas if you absolutely have to.
- with Marshalls, now is probably the last chance to buy these classics in good shape used for less than a new reissue or a kit
, they already start to go up big time
- re the Anniversary, what I'm after here is big amp tone, headroom and 3D, you need big bottles cooking for that.
I love small amps, too, but they're different.
A 3 liter Audi is a wonderful car, but it will never beat a big block at its own game.
- the 6100 has power reduction down to 25W, but that's not what I'm after.
- unlike with the dumbed down later 800s and the 900s, Marshall didn't cut any corners for their 30th Anniverssary model, and they mostly won with the early models.
The later, 5881 equipped, LM models were a considerable step back but can be converted to original specs.
If you view it as a two channel amp (JTM45++ and 2203) they definitely succeeded, the lead channel, well ...
High gain never was Marshall's forte anyway.
Maybe some 12AT7s or other weaker tubes will make it more usable, we'll see.
If not I'll consider having it modded to be a clone of crunch B, giving me separate clean, crunch A and crunch B channels. One of the rare cases where a mod actually makes sense as nobody seems to buy the 6100 for that lead mode ...
We'll see how far it'll go without invasive surgery.
- as you see, rules are there to be broken ...
Ymmv,

I'm not 'too green' is the proper term, though it would be a no brainer if my father was alive. However note when I say I want to do this, it's point to point wiring and really pretty straight forward stuff (except for biasing and that is not all that either). I do have enough knowledge to build on, there are pleenty of resources for earning more and of course like I said I would pay a tech to inspect it.
The problem is the voltage danger and the fact the caps hold onto that voltage after the power has been unplugged. I remember a time when evry drug store had a tube tester in them and besides that there isn't much more troubleshooting in tube amps. My father did teach me how to check a cap to see if it's holding power as it suppose to but I would need a quick review and then there's resistors. Looking at the wiring diagram it isn't that hard, but the quote is pretty tempting to have it built. I just rechecked my email and the quote was 325 for the build an 25 for a master volume added. I would probably also want the half power switch mod as well (which I could do as well, I did add a master volume and the 'cali hotrod' to a plexi in the 80s). So I dont know
Good luck with your new amp though, I'm green with envy but I'm not done yet

You could get a Ceriatone kit, that way a lot of the wiring is pre-assembled for you. They have an 18W Marshall with a Matchless-style EF86 channel that has always seemed cool to me:Hink wrote:That's why I want an 18 watt Marshall head replica kit from weber (mojo sells them too), the deal is though...build? that looks intersting Eric, I do want a master volume though (I'm sure adding a weber mod for that would not be difficult though nor is the 1/2 power switch)..I'll be keeping that in mind, thanx (you might get a call from me down the line on this)Uncle E wrote:You could get a Ceriatone kit, that way a lot of the wiring is pre-assembled for you. The JCM800 and 2550/2555 Jubilee kits have master volumes. Personally, I really want a 2555.Hink wrote:that looks intersting Eric, I do want a master volume though (I'm sure adding a weber mod for that would not be difficult though nor is the 1/2 power switch)..I'll be keeping that in mind, thanx (you might get a call from me down the line on this)
