I wont say who because name dropping sux, but in the late 70s while I was stationed 60 miles from Austin texas I met s great blues player a little older than me. We saw him at a club and we saw both shows that weekend, the first night he sat down and had beers with us and the next night after the show he took me back stage to see a 59 les paul jr he was beaming proud of (but he didn't play it during the show), I dont remember the configuration of it tbh. That was when I still wanted a les paul like my friends (I bought my 72 tele custom in texas at ray hennings heart of texs music), but I reckon it wouldn't matter what type of guitar it was, it was more important who's guitar it was

My new Les Paul is the first one I've played.
The string height was buzzy when I got it, I had to raise it heaps. I don't play slide, I like the lowest action possible.
Now it is 3/4 of what I had to raise it originally, about 4.25 mm at the heel.
It sounds good, but to tell you the truth, I mightn't have the best ear for tone. The most prominent charachteristic to my ears is given by the new strings. I'll up a little demo and you can tell me what you think of it clean.
I can distinguish the differences between switching pups though, mainly similar to an eq. or filter.

a) wonderful looking custom shop!

b) Maybe it's just me, but 1) I always measure at or around the 12th fret (ibby says 14th fret......it varies a little bit) and 2mm on the bass side is kinda high imho. 2) When you say heel, you are talking about the last fret or the bridge?

I meant neck heel, so the trebliest fret.
At the 12th it is 3.5 from the fretboard on the high E, 4.5 on low.
This is better than what I had to do originally to stop buzzes around the 7th , as the nut adjustments helped. It' still not great. Not sure what to do now to improve it.

The inlay is so intricate, and yeah, it doesn't look like the decoration is too elaborate, as to my eye the elements compliment.

Yeah, that action is not right. Since I'm not there and haven't owned an LP I reluctant to give advice. But, those heights you mentioned would be unacceptable for me personally. Do you have a trusted setup guy you can take it to?

Don't know what they'll ask for a one-off like that but I'm quite certain I could find a better guitar or two for that money elsewhere.
Plus it reminds me a bit of a monastery in Greece I once visited, they had a display of the most amazing "jars" made from pure silver wire around old holy relics, each one being the lifetime work of a great artist.

Not one I have used, as I have set up all mine myself,
but my local chain, Billy Hyde's, should be able to help.
The best one is 2&3mm at 12, a Tele.
Maybe I don't know a good action too well.
I am measuring from the fretboard, not the top of the fret.
Any advice is welcome man.

If I had a guitar like that I would either have to have a two wheel drive pick-up with an empty can of lone star on the dash, a gun rack with a baseball bat in it in the rear window and a bumper sticker that says 'I brake for beer" or a convertable Caddy with cattle horns on the front of the hood

It's so useful and in fact pretty easy.
Action is always measured from the top of the fret as that eliminates the factor fretwire.

As mentioned, top of the fret is the correct method and generally it's the 12th fret. Did you have this shipped from a different continent? Overseas/climate change can really mess with a neck.

I've owned two LP's a 57 Gold top and a 78 Custom. Both had extremely low action with no buzz. If your neck is straight and you are catching buzz your frets are coming out. Of the two I preferred the custom. It wasn't like many customs that have a baseball bat for a neck. A Les Paul is not a guitar you want to DYI. Take it to a pro.
