2 out of 3 aint bad, I put one EMG PA-2 in the guitar and put the trim pot at about 30% and wired in a second battery clip with an SPDT switch to cancel one battery. So now the specs on my ESP/LTD MG-350FR are...

EMG 81 (bridge)
EMG 85 (neck)
EMG PA-2 pre-amp
9/18 volt switch
neck-thru body (24 fret)
carved top
Floyd Rose

I think I'll be playing this guitar a lot

I'm glad I wired a switch in for the 18 volt, it's very subtle in the changes it makes. I have to back off the the trimpot on the PA-2 (a little hiss, but the hiss does not change when switching voltage). It's a bit like having a subtle fat switch

All about the 85 at the bridge IMHO but that is simply my preference, Although it puts out a bit less it has more beef in the low-mids/mids and less harsh highs/presence i find. Its all down to the Alnico magnet against the Ceramic magnet character and YMMV alot. Need to activate my Schecter 7-string baritone ASAP as it is now setup just right with a .75 on the bottom (needed to drill the machine head to fit that f**ker through!) then .62 .52 .46 .38 .28 or .30 and then highest is an .18 so its tuned/strung like an 8-string would be. The stock passive EMG 7-string buckers just do not cut the mustard (which i fully expected anyway). Think i will go for a single bridge 707 and then fit some form of switch so i can leave the middle one as is as it won't see much, If any action. Doing it that way both saves me money as i only have to grab the one active plus as one battery is powering the sole bridge bucker (the 707 is essentially an 85 but extended for 7s and in that non-spring loaded plastic or whatever pickup mount format as the pup(s) screw straight into the top) which is same as adding an extra battery for 2 ala 18 volt. Will do some Piccys when it is done. It sounds  as is so i am chomping at the bit to get it done :)
Not new but the most recent settling down but still needs the finishing nekrotizing :tu:

How about trying the Blackouts Modular Preamp with your stock pickups? That seems like an easier and cheaper solution.

Believe me, I'm so glad you recommended I swap the 85 and 81 (as others did as well) as the 85 in the bridge is just gorgeous!

I think I'm pretty happy with it now, I put one of my EMG 89s in the bridge once and didn't like it at all. TBH the TS clone with the diodes lifted and a little more boost from the guitar is turning out to be my sweet spot :tu:

Pre-ordered this guy a couple of days ago since I missed a great opportunity to pick up a SC607 on ebay which sold for $285 :bang: It doesn't ship till 6/24/2011...I'll probably be switching to active EMG 81/85 someday...

first congrats :D Second read Erics post about the blackout pre-amp, third go to the diy forum and read my post about the alembic stratoblaster replica kit. You might find both of those (also the artec QDD2 pre-amp and the EMG PA-2 pre-amp) better solutions. You will need 7 string pick-ups and not stock EMGs otherwise

btw is that neck thru? I just got a 6 string (with a rose) ESP/LTD MG350 FR and it has a similar carved top...I love it :tu:

Yes indeed i have considered going for that option Eric and it is a great one which i shall, over time be putting into 3 of my other guitars :tu: Nice one for bringing it up as they are available now afaik (I remember posting a link or two from youtube by the SD channel about and also demonstrating the blackouts modular preamp but it was not available at that time). However for this specific guitar i know that the 707 is exactly what i am after :) plus the middle one i would like to keep as is, Have no 'middle' position by replacing the 3-way toggle with a 2-way as i would never use the bridge/middle. The middle would be for clean sounds only, This will have the volume and most importantly tone controls wired to it as on the bridge it is literally a case of all full-on always. Yeah i know its a 'scenic route' for sure but there is method in my madness (So i keep reassuring myself!). When i say strung and tuned like an 8-string i mean missing what would be the highest string plus the lowest dropped down like it would if it were in drop-d. It comes in at around drop-G to drop-F, So when in drop-g the lowest 3 spell GAG
