Tyrell Nexus 6

Post

Finally i'm making 2 entries.
The first i started two days ago, it's more structured and complex, but for some reason, i'm not feeling comfortable with it yet, i'm missing something in it, i will upload it anyway when finish (almost done) but i'm dissatisfied.

So i though it was a thing from Tyrell, but not, i'm making the new track right now, and 'oh my', Tyrell is really good. Now Tyrell is linked with my feelings and we are getting good.
Now i feel like i'm on my fit and making my own feelings with this new track. A bit late, the last week...

I'm making this new track with only 6 or 7 Tyrells. It doesn't need anything more. This is what i like, easy-to-do track, using the minimal number of things and expressing what you feel.

Today i have passed a bad day, so i got sad and took advantage of it so i started the new song. I like this much more than the other.
Sometimes you just need to feel something inside (good or bad) to make a good track.
Rushing doesn't work good.

@Hemmick Reef

For some reason, we can't download your track, man. Set it in 'download' mode, maybe you didn't noticed. :) Cheers.

@V'ger

Are you going to participate in this month OSC, mate? How is going the track? :)

Only thing you missed was that name format should be Artist - Track Title but not a huge deal, everything else seems spot on. Nice to know if people used samplers or bounced so hope to see others include it in the write-up.

Thanx a lot !
I'm happy that you listened to the track.
That little hich up won't happen again...

Best ,

Stonail

As usual got something started early then left it.. Bit low on mojo atm and as you say, the middle ground state where one is neither up or down is the most unproductive. Shame as I adore Tyrell, but might still get a late rush of inspiration to be in..

Sorry if this has been answered already; I didn't see any explicit mention of it in the rules - or, I'm just burned out from work/kids/Tyrell patch contest :?

Is DAW automation of synth parameters allowed in OSC? If not, is volume, pan automation allowed?

TY

I can see my self being a pain in the butt here - but is distortion/bit-crushing allowed in the OSC? It seems to fall under the category of "changes the sound of the synth", but I've got one of those stupid "lead guitar" patches that just sounds sooooo right with Camel Crusher.

Synth parameters automations are allowed and, in fact, encouraged (OSC is about this, what you can do with only this free synth, and show what is capable to do tweaking it, also volumes, pan, etc...)

Three basic rules are: (summarizing)
  • -Use only the synth of this OSC month and show us what you can do with it using parameters, automations, built-in effects, etc...
-Effects must be free and not modulators. Only can use host EQ as effect.
-No external samples allowed, only bouncing/dumping/sampling/freezing whatever you can do with the synth. (at least on this month because Tyrell consumes so much CPU)
About Distortion/Bit-crusher, i think if not allowed because, as you said, changes the nature of the sound. But you should ask about your little guitar sound to V'ger, he is the boss here :hihi:
But i think he will say to you 'no'. Think about other contesters, it would be unfair. Sometimes i want to use distortion, phase, chorus, bitcrushers but i stick to the rules.

Good luck :)

Exactly, automation encouraged, distortion not..

Like said, no specific rule about distortion other than the 'transforming of the sound to unrecognizable level' one, so some saturation ok, but too much not. Unless over the top distortion where you automatically disqualify yourself, voters will be the final judge what's an acceptable level so you must take your chances with them. :)

TY for the responses gents - I don't need distortion bad enough to chance disqualifying myself (assuming I finish on time). I suspect one could alter the sound more with a wet convolution reverb than light clipping, so I'll lean towards very conservative use of all :)

BTW - if anyone is looking for a free Audio Unit limiter, there's this (which I found out about elsewhere on KVR):

http://www.yohng.com/software/w1limit.html

I haven't toyed with it much yet, but the developer has a track record.

(Irion - just listened to your "Falling Asleep" - good stuff! I need to quit my day job so I can listen to everyone's music and steal all the good ideas :hyper: )

Thanks for the detail :)
Well, i haven't a job right now, so i'm into deep musical composition. I let down playing videogames even (and i have passion for that world) but with those OSC challenges, i'm very motivated, but it's not for the prizes, is, another thing. When you create a track and you know there is someone in another part of the world playing your track makes you feel very great.

Also, Falling Asleep was my first track in OSC challenges, and i got surprised the good ambient in this forum and the acceptation of new contesters and forists.

Practically, i'm new here too. And since the past month, i was downloading all older songs from all OSC too and listening all of them.
Now I have a playlist with 25 tracks which i liked so much.

I didn't take ideas from anyone here, because the purpose is to make your own ideas and feelings, but now, i know what kind of music is going to make this contester or another. There is something printed in all their songs, and you know how they feel or how are them through their tracks. That's a personality factor impressed in their songs.

I always smile when i'm listening a song from the same compositor but from different OSC challenge, and i know how are they going to sound, or what are they going to do. It's unavoidable.

Well, good luck to you with your track, dude. :)

Almost done with my piece, posting soon- maybe the most complicated piece I've ever created! The synth was difficult to use on my PC, half of the presets could not play, so I had to bounce them just to hear them.

Post

Well done everyone !! Your compositions are very very cool :hihi: After listening to them I just took my 4 songs and threw them into the bin!! :o I will definetly practice harder to get up to your guys quality!!! Maybe next time!! I did try to use Kirnu arp with Tyrell on Sonar 8.5 pro, but had alot of stuck notes  so that option didn't work  , but I learned alot and was definitely time well spent.

I also just wanted to thank Urs for a gem of a synth, because of this OSC I have gotten to know an awesome synth, thanks once again for that!!

Friends I Have a suggestion though!! As a token of appreciation to Urs, may I suggest that if you guys made new presets for this OSC Why don't we donate It to his Preset library for Tyrell after the  competition is over?

Just a thought 8)
The notes you don't play creates the silent gaps for you to hear the notes you do play :phones:

You shouldn't throw your work. Instead of that, just upload it to this OSC.
Yeah, maybe you can't win any prizes, but we could listen to your tracks, and help you to improve your skill. And this is better than just win.
Only if you want, of course.

Look, i'm in the world of composition since i was 14, i made terrible tracks that i could feel ashamed, but, they are my past, my evolution, i learned a lot from them. And now, after 13-15 years (i'm 29) i'm starting to composing better tracks. So i invite you to keep making music, and not throwing to the bin those works.
Someday, with patience, criticism, and learning a bit everyday, you will make better tracks too. Just be patient.

There is not any musician in the world who made great tracks from zero.

Good luck and go ahead. :)

Ineed, just clicking the upload button is a great litmus test for yourself. It always surprises me how a track I've been working on for weeks can suddenly sound so different the minute it's online..

Very good idea, must remember a call for presets after the comp finishes.

@JoeCat: Yes to some extent other fx can also transform the sound heavily, but so far reverb and eq soak have by and large been accepted as seen by the scores. At least with that you can still tell the underlying sound as opposed to too much distortion I suppose.

@Mike777: Bounce just to hear a preset? Ouch.. :?
