EDIT: I see. No host fx at all these days. Wow!! Only EQ? Hmm. I think that should be okay. There's still time for a few nip and tucks yet. Can anybody recommend a good reverb & compression for this particular track? I'll give each recommendation a try. Any tips would help.

What have I done? Live can't output mp3. Shall I just upload the Ableton wav to Soundcloud instead of mp3ing it first in Audition? Is that what you mean? or is it the compression not allowed? I thought I'd read the rules right ... maybe not.

Hi objectman,
if you're on windows i can recommend the plugins from Variety of Sound.
epicVerb: one of the best, if not the best free reverb
Density mkII: very fine compressor/limiter
FerricTDS: great for adding density to your mix or smoothing high frequencies
All others from VoS are great, too, of course!
At least in my opinion.
You can get them here: http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/

Agree those are good, I'll add Ambience and TAL II reverbs. For compressor there's the new Molot with oversampling and ReaComp which imo is also very good and comes out favorably in comparison threads I've seen.

Excellent. Thank you BOTH. You've basically given me a list of homework to do. Finally now I get to do some homework - as opposed to the 300 students (each with 4 bloody massive assignments) - that I've been teaching (and marking) for the last 3 gruelling months!
Ahhhhh, music and musicality
... And hangin' wif my muso homeys at the OSC.
Now wher can I get a big reefer so I can fully pump this track?

Wow... thank you SOOOOOOO much. I touched on trackers when I was a teenager (in the late '90s), but I've really only been learning to create my own digital music for about a year now. However, in the year that I've been using Reaper and ReNoise I've only seen one serious glitch, and that was a problem with running E-MU Emulator X3 on a totally RAID computer. The Emulator X3 process would load in the background, but the GUI completely refused to show on screen. After nearly a week of troubleshooting, reinstalling software and emailing E-MU tech support, I finally figured it out on my own, removed the RAID array and installed a single SSD instead, and now Emulator X3 works like a charm. I ended up with a sincere apology from the tech support guy I was dealing with, plus a voucher entitling me to 5 free sound packs for Emulator X3 from http://www.digitalsoundfactory.comV'ger wrote:Further tips is that since String Theory is pre SynthEdit v2.0, it has the old multicore bug, but a solution for Reaper users is to right-click on load and selecting 'Buggy plugin compatibility mode' which should take care of it.
Until now...
Yesterday my project would work fine for a few minutes, then String Theory 1.5 would crash on every track, along with the reverbs that I had running with them, then after adding another track or two and (subsequently) having to reload the project a couple of times, Reaper decided that it either wouldn't start at all when set to auto-load my project, or would start in "new project" mode, but as soon as I try loading my project it would instantly crash!
The "Buggy plugin compatibility mode" does the trick, however. Thanks HEAPS...!!!!

Cheers
and yes I've seen 1 or 2 issues found to be related to RAID elsewhere (can't remember exactly what now). But decent of DSF to compensate somewhat.
Isn't 'coffee' the PC term for it nowadays?
What you teaching btw?

I teach web design at Curtin University in Western Australia. I've gone part time because I have so many websites to complete, but getting this bit of music right seems important to me.
I've already re-uploaded with a couple of free VSTs and I'm reading a free ebook about mastering and mixing. I used that Russian compressor you recommended (which is great) and a free "Spinner VST. Sometimes I think I'm persuaded by the vst graphics. It's hard keeping my eyes out of equation.
I think I had my last "toke" about 15 years ago to be honest and I'm getting heartburn from strong coffee. These days my drugs of choice seem to be chamomile tea and chocolate.
Awfully quiet in here. I got in real early didn't I?

Can we use samples without a sampler?
In Renoise I've got 3 instances of String Theory running, and they're already taking over 60% CPU.
I rendered the 'snare sound' to an 'instrument' (sample), and can trigger those through the tracker interface; no need for an added sampler.
Apparently, the same sort of thing can be done in Cubase.
So, if we're using samples to cut down on CPU usage, but don't need an additional sampler do this, is that ok?

@IrionDaRonin
It turns out I bought one for $10 in a sale at
http://audio.tutsplus.com/articles/gene ... %E2%80%9D/
and that's the one that's helping most now (it's pretty basic but I like it).
Here's a free mastering book link, @IrionDaRonin.
http://www.audiorecording.me/music-prod ... ering.html
- plus Computer Music mag, naturally.
@mrblitz,
Literally cut-n-paste the string theory .dll file and use a different instance in each channel. I hit CTRL-C then CTRL-V on the DLL and used each copy number in a new track. Make a note of the presets you're using first, though. Even 2 channels using the same String Theory dll crashed Live.

Having a few problems here too...String Theory and Cubase 64 bit don't want to play nicely together
Even copying/renaming the .dll trick isn't working, however I'm now using the alternative workaround which is to disable multicore processing in device settings and this is so far enabling me to load several instances of the single .dll without complaint
VST bridge still not happy and crashes on exit but at least I can work without crashes while editing - except I'm limited to one processor core
so I reckon I'll max out after only 6 or 7 instances which means I'll be keeping it very simple this month

same here on live 8.2.1, the plugin randomly crashes, it's a bit frustrating...

Yes this was the risk with choosing a SynthEdit pre ver.2, but it was too good to be left out of the synth vote, hope you all can manage with it. The Reaper - and I believe the Fruity trick too - is anyway disabling multi-core for the synth, although it sounds like Cubase cuts out ALL multi-core processing, not just the synth?

About Spinner VST, that's the leslie emulation thing right? Sure that isn't doing modulation which is another no-no?
Admit I'm a bit out of it, but what do chamomile tea and chocolate denote?objectman wrote:I teach web design at Curtin University in Western Australia. I've gone part time because I have so many websites to complete, but getting this bit of music right seems important to me.

Yes sure, no need to use a dedicated sampler if you just trigger a wave as in bouncing.mrblitz000 wrote:Can we use samples without a sampler?

@V'ger.
Yes, Spinner is that free Leslie thingo. I don't think it's doing modulation although how can I check? It just spins (pans) the crap out of that chugging preset, making it sound a bit dizzy (like that's not happening anyway). I really actually don't need tricks like that. Everything is so wet with reverb anyway.
Chamomile and chocolate makes me feel like a girl
.
@everyone. Yeah. Like the amazing Chimera by Majken, it's a bit buggy but sounds awesome and is pretty unique actually, don't youse all think?

Is it the Iliadis or Nubi3 one?
