Be honest, can you make real music on your iPad?

Do you guys feel that you can use your iPad to make good music? Or is it still just a toy or "sketch pad" pad at this point?
Would anybody like to show off a sample of something they (or others) have made only on iPad?

I suppose it depends on your definition of 'real' or 'good' music.
I've heard commercial stuff produced in top flight studios that I wouldn't place in either category.
On the other hand, there's that YouTube vid of a young band playing their iPhones while riding the subway, and, frankly, it's a real toe-tapper.
The debate continues...

Well, I know "good music" is relative. But I'm asking people to be critical here.
I've seen the iPhone music video. It's cute, it's fun, but it's not good music in the sense that I'm talking about. The software instruments they are playing are toys, not complex, sonically interesting instruments.
I should also add that I'm only talking about midi/synth stuff. Not recording live audio.

For me it's still a sketch pad and a nice learning tools for me. I'm learning more about synth programming since it's mobile, so when i have nothing to do, i just play around with xenon and ims20 then tweak the synth, since usually when i'm on my mac, i just want to use it to create music (Not much experiment anymore).
The problem with ipad is that it cannot do eveything ITB, it's just an accesories right now. I think we should narrow the definition of real music here to music that sounds like they are professionally produced. And i have yet to hear any professional sounding sound that were done entirely in just 1 ipad.

working on something at the moment that i think sounds great...will upload a clip at some point...all done in nanostudiobdjansen wrote:Do you guys feel that you can use your iPad to make good music? Or is it still just a toy or "sketch pad" pad at this point?

i don't really understand the idea that it's only a sketchpad...f'sure, it wont be able to do everything a full daw can do but that doesn't mean the music you can make can't be good
to give some perspective, 7 years ago i was using an atari st, yamaha a3000 sampler, alesis ion and fostex 16track recorder.....so much good, and popular, music has been made on similar setups over the years...well, i'm getting better, quicker and easier results than that heap'o'junk, all in the palm of my hand with nanostudio....if you make bad music with these tools, i'd say it i not the fault of the tools

Never seen 'good' music defined as being solely the domain of using 'complex, sonically interesting' instruments.bdjansen wrote:It's cute, it's fun, but it's not good music in the sense that I'm talking about. I guess, though, if folk run their 'bad' ipod music through a MoogerFooger Ring Modulator and a Metasonix KV-100, then it'll become good as a result of all that new sonic interest they add.

I purchased my iPad with that intention now however it's been re-assigned as a MIDI control surface which it is perfect for.
A mobile device will never compete with a quad core phenom running REAPER and virtually limitless VST functionality and i don't really get the out and about scratch pad idea.
As you say Cutesie apps at best although i must big up the NLOG pro synth for ipad it just sounds so good but can only run 1 at a time obviously.

mmmmmmm.....
Of course, sonicly interesting instruments are just toys as well, if you do not know what you are doing...then again...

I don't quite understand the OP's definition of 'good' being intertwined with 'sonically interesting' instruments. If it's cute and fun, I'm in. I don't really care if it's made on a toy or a Steinway.
And, frankly, most of the stuff in my studio, although 'sonically complex' as defined by some, could very easily fall into the 'toy' catagory. [I'm looking at you Mouth, Finger, grain-reduction samplers and all manner of matrix-mangling beatbox style generators.]
I'll take it a step further, though, with a quick illustration. I occasionally use FLS on my laptop when I'm away from home. I'm not well versed in FLS, as my main studio DAW is Cubase with a dedicated soundcard, etc. But I like to make 'sketches' and what not. And to do this, I have to substitute various compromise instruments (i.e. FLS's included generators) for my preferred choice of higher end instruments that reside on my main hard-drive. But when I have to 'make do,' it sometimes amazes me how well that option actually fits the piece that I'm working on. It's not 'bad' or 'better' but just 'different.'
Cheers

I bought my iPad (after my wife got sick of me using hers to feed my Angry Birds addiction) to use primarily as a MIDI controller/control surface. I've tried a few of the music-making apps (e.g., the GarageBand app), but to me, the workflow is just not efficient IMO and I'd much rather spend my limited music time at my real DAW.
