FL Studio - Vst Arp Midi Output Recording

I'm pretty sure I read in the past that this wasn't possible, but that was years ago, so it seems worth asking again, in 2K11 ha-ha.

I want to run a vst synth with an onboard arppegiator, and have FL Studio record the notes it plays to the piano roll. So that they can be edited and/or saved as .mid midi files. Is this possible, and if so, can someone explain how I can do this, or point me toward a tutorial ?

Thanks for taking a look at my question. :)

It is still not possible and I guess it will never...
It is because of the way midi data is handled by FL Studio.

It also depends on the VST... First step is to make sure the ARP actually outputs MIDI to the host, as many of them don't.

You can, but it's a fiddle. Can't remember the exact steps, but you have to install something like MIDI Yoke. You then route the MIDI from your VST out to MIDI Yoke then back into FL as your main MIDI controller (i.e. an input that controls another channel). Record this channel. I used it with Chordspace and it definitely worked ok.

I use Reaper for recording midi output.
You can then use the midi files in FL.

Not sure why FL can't seem to handle midi as well as some other hosts (unless IL has made recent progress in this area).

maybe it is possible with patcher, but atm I'm at work, so I can't check it out!

That seems like maybe something easy to check, err, how do I check that ? ha-ha.

I have an Ableton Lite disc I could install. Does Ableton accomplish this midi output recording better than FL ?

I'd rather not go the Reaper route, as I wouldn't have any other need for it, plus it costs more money etc.

I've heard of MidiYoke, but when I googled it, the description didn't quite sound like what I wanted to do.

No idea what 'patcher' is ?

Thanks to everyone for the replies so far, even if the news hasn't been very good ha-ha. :)

BTW, FL Studio built in arpeggiator is very good tool. And it can be feed by user midi patterns as well..

In FL Studio this doesn't matter...
FL Studio is not capable of recording midi from a VST/i as it is not possible to route midi data to it's internal plugins...
GOL said it's because FLS handles midi data internally, which is converted to "something else" but no midi anymore.

The only way is as speccyteccy pointed...you have to send the midi data out of FL Studio to bring it back again via virtual midi ports...but internally even not with patcher... it is not possible.

MIDI Yoke works - I've just tried it.

Set the output port of the vst you want to record to one of FL's MIDI ports
In FL's MIDI output settings, map one of MIDI Yoke's ports to the port you selected above, then in the MIDI input settings enable the same MIDI Yoke port. You need to control your vst with the piano roll rather than a midi keyboard (as the MIDI Yoke port is now your input not your MIDI keyboard). Create a new channel to record into and make sure this channel is selected. Press record & play:

Piano roll controls the vst
VST outputs to an FL midi port
FL midi port routes out of FL to the MIDI Yoke port
MIDI Yoke port is routed back into FL as the midi controller
This controller plays the selected channel
Notes played into this channel are recorded.

I am a slight-to-medium fan of the built in FL arp ha-ha, it's not bad at all really. However for my purposes I have already programmed many arps in a couple of plug-ins, and am hoping to be able to export them for use with other synths.

Trancit, I take it you have tried to do what I am describing/wanting to do, in FL, and never found a way to do it then ? I'm about to move on and try to do it in Abelton, even though I really don't care for the layout of that program. And it would be oh so much easier if there was a way to set it up in FL, to simply open a patch, and render the midi arp notes it outputs.

Great ! I'll give it a shot using your directions. Thank you muchness. :) And thanks to everyone who replied of course, we managed to not have any arguements or trolling stuff going on, that's always a bonus ha-ha. :)

Edit: Never mind... you want to record the MIDI, not just have it play something else

I think I might be screwing it up at this point. What do you mean by 'create a new channel' ? And how exactly am I 'selecting' that channel to record to ? Thanks. :)

I have read this:

"If that's all you're after, right click the record button and make sure it's recording "Score" data. Place the pattern in the playlist, specify the length of track with the highlight tool, then hit record and play."

And that:

Googlish:
RE: VST Arp sequences of notes as in the Piano Roll
Another possibility would be even with FL funds as follows:

1st
load Edison in the slot on the FX original Arp / Sylenth track

2nd
set Edison recording to "on input", then press the record button

3rd
play Loop in the Song mode and at a low BPM a bit longer - provides accurate results in the following point

4th
By playing the Song mode Edison created the same right song called markers, which clear through the second Song marker gives a clean looped Loop

5th
Now there is in the Edison menu next to the button with the scissors, the function "Convert to dump to score and piano roll" (or something like that I do not sit before grad FL - The last point is right in the window)

This is so to speak, produces a MIDI file and immediately into the Sylenth track (goes with each plug) is inserted, this score can then save as, copy it to other tracks ... the results are with me at a slow recording speed almost perfectly - this method works very well to create scores from audio loops ready. And scores can then yes as any midi file and then be replayed in the desired BPM ...

Most customers of mine that have problems with my MIDI plugins use FL or Ableton. These hosts really seem to be *#$+*#&%$§#* :P
