I'm starting to get interested in using the iPad for recording. Seeing mics and guitar interfaces from IKMultimedia and Moog products, is it possible to incorporate these different apps and use them in one of the tracking apps.

Not sure if you can use an app like the Moog Filtratron in conjuntion with garage band in the same way you can drop a soft synth into a vst folder and process instruments?

How far are we away from it being a complete studio?

Still far, in terms of the drag-and-drop scenario you describe, but there are workarounds.

GarageBand (and other apps) alone can make a decent production, but to process something via Filtatron, as an example, you'd have to bounce, import, resample, and reimport. It's limited and still a little convoluted, but it can be done!

In my view, some of these limitations can certainly spur creativity, and I think that's what I'm actually enjoying about production on the iPad right now. Reminds me of how I started out -- bouncing and overdubbing instruments in real-time between 2 off-the-shelf cassette decks -- although with MUCH better fidelity now!
