If you want something free, but not exactly 909 emu, you have to download the famous Drumatic 3.

909 sounds great... but at this point... why? Unless you spend some time post processing it, you'll just basically get all the sounds that everyone's been using forever.

Especially when there are great alternatives out there. I just discovered Extreme Drum Synth. Amazing sound. Also, someone mentioned Drumaxx, also very very good.

I can't speak about Tattoo by Audiodamage, but their stuff is always of the highest quality. I have their FM based Axon, which can be used as just a drum synth, but it also has a very novel sequencer.

I just demoed Spark. Good for bread and butter sounds, but I thought it sounded a bit dead. Synth was nothing to write home about. Note, I don't like very "safe" sounds.

I liked Punch a lot... if I didn't already have Battery and a few that I mentioned above, I might get this one.

If you already have Battery, I suggest that Transistors sound lib. Sounds really good to me. There's a Maschine version too.

I like AudioRealism Drum Machine (ADM) because of its flexibility. Not only do you get 606/808/909 emulations but you can also load your own samples into it for more drum sounds.

Tromine is a decent freeware 909 from what I remember.

Transistor Rhythm, which is by the same dev and has a bit of overlap with Transistor Punch, does come with Battery kits.

so, if i am wrong, that's great i just need to understand, if there's a benefit in sampling something so old at a super high sample rate. cheers and tia
The TR 909 was analog with the exception of the hihat and cymbals. They were indeed 6 bits but with analog processing applied. So it makes sense to capture it as accurately as possible. What that actually means is another discussion.

Besides, the D16 guys are amazing!

No vst emulation but some real 909 sample pack(s) should do the trick just fine (at least for me) :)
