Well, actually you don't unless the app has a playback function (some have). It is rather something like:

1) You make a drumbeat in Molten at say 130 BMP
2) You make a bassline in Horizon at 130 BMP, while you try to remember the groove of 1)
3) you import them to Nanostudio or BMII and add synths/samplers.
Then you proceed:
4) You remember the groove and go to your Crystal synth for making an evolving pad and
5) You import it and hear whether you were lucky

It is certainly not as good a workflow as in a PC daw, but it might be more fun due to the touchscreen control.

I have a little improvement to this workflow, because I simply transfer all samples that I can from other apps (BMII, Electrify, iSequence etc.) to Nanostudios directories. Then I can build the beats up mainly from Nanostudio instead of copying and pasting all the time from e.g. iSequence to NanoStudio. Of course, this will not work with standalone synths unless they are sample based, so here I have to copy and paste, but it's OK. It's worth it IMO.

Horizon doesn't have an audible metronome, just a blinking led.
Bm2 can play in the background with certain apps but not with audio apps.
The only app I found so far that can play along horizon is thumbjam, when it,s not crashing.

So all you have to do is
Mix down bm2 or nano
Copy
Switch to thumbjam
Paste and save as loop
Load that loop and play it
Go to horizon , play , record, copy
Back to thumbjam to stop the loop
Back to bm or nano and paste

As horizon doesnt support the Sonoma copy/paste you cant record a few takes without pasting each time.

Perfect. If there's will there's a way. That is the one and only approach that works for making app music at this stage of development.

Only alternative is to get back to ancient techniques: Train your sonic memory.

thanks guys...i was actually hoping it would be a lot more convoluted   :)

luckily, i do have 'thumbjam'...

i think it might be a few steps too far, especially on a fiddly ipod touch

at this point, i have only just got into 'eden'..i wonder if 'horizon' is so much better; good enough to warrant this extra hassle

thanks again

actually, i forgot that thumb could run in the background...was jamming with itunes t'other day...i guess, knowing it could paste loops from elsewhere was the key :)

Well, I'd say that you don't have to suffer from GAS to appriciate the fat og wonderful VA sound of Horizon. But I do suffer from GAS so I really wouldn't know.

well, i got over my g.a.s a while back (kvr helped, ironically), but i'd like a good little apps portfolio to continue with my project...gonna wait till i can afford bm2, and might throw in the small fee for horizon at the same time

@ebow...

If you have Nanostudio (I assume you do since you are getting into Eden) then you are good to go. I happen to like BM2 better, main reason being it has a nice sample editor/chopper built right in, and for some reason it just "clicks" with me. But most prefer NS. Eden is awesome for a built in Synth, and is easy to use. Horizon reminds me of Sylenth1 on the VSTi side of things, and I just adore that sound......

Working in iOS is pretty convoluted compared to a Mac/PC. But it works, and I have found the quick and easy isn't always the best for me. It is also important to remember that Mac/PC music software has had decades to mature. The iPad has been out a little over a year, and iOS in general about 4.

Sitting in the recliner with headphones on and my iPad is just more natural to me then sitting at a computer with wires and such running about. I do not see the iPad as a replacement for a Mac/PC to make music, no more than I see a computer as a replacement to a recording studio. We are 20 plus years into computer DAWS, and most all commercial music is still made in a traditional, million dollar studio environment. Instead I see the iPad as a "different" way of creating music. Not better or worse than a computer or a studio, just different. Just like a piano is not "better" than a guitar, but it is different.

I saw another thread on this forum with the title asking it you can make "real" music on an iPad. If by real music you mean Lady Gaga, then no. Lady Gaga does not use an iPad or a computer, she goes to a studio. But I think "Real" music is made every day on iPhones, iPads, Nintendo DS, Macs, PC's and million dollar studios. A kazoo can be a toy, or an instrument. It all depends on who is using it.

we're on the same page with regard to this not being a replacement for a 'mature' daw, for the comfort of sitting away from a desk and just jamming with something that's fun...i'm really not looking to replace my logic setup, but to experiment with a different workflow and see what i can come up with...i have no interest in trying to force my daw workflow into this new paradigm, so can circumnavigate all the 'why bother, when you have a full studio' arguments

as for 'real' music, i believe anything can qualify....i make music that sounds good to me, that's all

now, with regard to nanostudio and bm2, i do have nano and think it's great...my interest in bm2 is really only for the slicing abilities.....i do have beattwirl, but find it really cumbersome....i like the idea of being able to process with effects and paste into nanostudio...but, actually, it was you who convinced me that bm2 might also be superior....i'm very early on with nano, and am therefore not so used to it that i couldn't switch if i found bm2 to suit me better...but, really, having both (along with thumbjam and sonoma 4track, which i already own), is gonna be a great combo....maybe horizon, just for luck :)

Molten, a drum machine, will play along with Nano in the background. Just confirmed this behavior.

Ditto for Funkbox - I use that as a quick/dirty metronome for Horizon. MoDrum works in the background by always sends the notes as well to Horizon! I found that weird and potentially interesting, but there is no way to turn that off. Funkbox lets you send notes or just play in the background without notes.

ok, thanks I got Funkbox, it makes a nice metronome ;)

What about a multi track recorder that can play in the background ?

Post

molten plays in background with BM2 as well. I wonder what the difference is? It seems to be hit and miss as to what apps actually do this. The only think I can figure is that the apps that do are truly implementing iOS multitasking. The ones that don't are not........

Okay. I got Funkbox as well for the metronome. It works very well.
