I will be trying it tonight after I buy it... definitely looking forward to it.

Good - now perhaps they can get back to developing their VSTi synths

Absolutely... but I can't afford any more of those yet !!! (And I really should delve deeper into Tera)

Post

I got it, and it is good for what I want it for. All I want from it is to create sounds/patterns and copy/paste into Beatmaker 2. Good synths, easy to make nice patches (even for me), and so I am happy with it.

It has a sequencer, but I find (at least for me) it is just about useless. The gesture based editing is a great idea, but in practice it is a PITA. So if you are looking to create complete songs with this app, you will have to have more patience than I have. Sure it could be done, but I have enough challenges in life already.

IMHO it is worth the money for the synths.....

I agree that the synths aren't bad but the implementation of the so-called 'four track sequencer' leaves me speechless: four separate sequencers with no means of visualising the sequences together or arranging patterns. I'm flabbergasted. I could just confine this to the bin of 'yet another app I'll never use' but I'm so irritated this time I've requested a refund.

David

One's money would be better spent on Horizon, than this, IMHO.

Edit: Harry of iSyn Poly has kindly entered this discussion below, so to be fair to him I shall qualify the above statement by saying: iSyn Poly is not a poor product, but I think most of us are in agreement that the sequencer has issues. And, perhaps, Horizon has the edge on sound quality. But not everyone will like the "JP-8000" way of working, so hey - choice is good!

Agree, but if you can have both, why not. Horizon is for me the Sylenth1 of iOS, but I like options ;)

I want to state again that Horizon is a must have. The arp, and it's big phat sound is just wonderful to use. I just can't hardly believe my headphones are plugged into my iPad, and not the computer. Major props to the developer of Horizon.

But the synths in iSyn Poly are solid, the sequencer is at best a sick joke. Much like Tera (same company Virsyn) was a great synth, but the arp/mini-sequencer in it was forever buggy and quirky..... Actually the synth was buggy as well......just not as much. Still, it does what I wanted from it.

I agree with you all. Nice synths, but the sequencer is useless but with some adjustment it might work. Then the app is worth its money.
A pity, it surely had potential. I'll wait for an update.

Post

Yeah, yeah...The sequencer sucks, but it is fine enough to make some initial bass, chord or melody lines and then copy and paste it into other apps. Just as you would do with e.g. Horizon by virtue of its limited but working step sequencer.

It's a fine app and to a true GAS'er it can never be a choice between iSyn and Horizon; only owning them both will do. :D

Wanted to update my feeling about this synth. It barely does what I need. It is so hard to do anything beyond a very basic beat or bass line in the "sequencer". Just trying to set the BPM to 140 is a challenge that I have yet to master . The closest I can get to is 141....... I have finally mastered entering a note, and setting the length. I am also pretty good at deleting a note. But in trying to move a note around I usually end up creating more notes and having to delete them.... this repeats over and over until I forget the idea I had when I started trying to enter the notes..... arrrggghhhhh!!!!!!

I will say the "sequencer' in this app is the most frustrating I have ever seen......I like the synths, it's the sequencer that brings tears to my eyes. What a mess!!!

Welcome to the club :D It sure is a PITA. A test of patience and will power.
But those synths are :-o   :wheee: compared to a lot of other crap out there. A forced choice: Will you beat it or give up the fight?

Another issue: The drum samples and drum engine do not sound good to me, so the synths are just about all it is worth fighting for.

Best of luck (and patience) :)

As most of you know already i'm Harry - the developer of iSyn Poly and i think it's time to say a few words…

First of all - sorry for the sequencer experience, rest assured that we haven't intended to stress your patience. We've tried to take a new approach to make a modeless editing possible using touch gestures.

I think two problems are the main cause for this experience:

1. Especially on iPad 1 it's not that responsive as it should be and working with quantization while entering notes often left the note one step to the wrong side. We're currently ironing out these quirks and will update iSyn Poly soon.

2. Maybe the gestures we used for adding, selecting and deleting are not that obvious as we have thought it would be. It's described in the manual on our website but i understand that nobody wants to read manuals ( me included… ).

The basic idea was already there in iSyn:

Swipe to the right -> draw note
Swipe to the left -> delete note

We have extended this model to incorporate more sophisticated operations - here are the basic ones ( you can lookup all in the manual on our website mobile.virsyn.com ):

Swipe to the right -> draw note
Touch without moving -> draw short note with 32th length.

Swipe to the left draws a surrounding rectangle to include one or more notes to select them. You'll see the a gray/blue shaded rectangle and the selected notes are drawn in yellow. There is now also a popup menu with the options Cut/Copy.

To move the selected notes around just touch in the grey area and move it around.
To change the length of the note touch the blue area and drag to the left or right.

Another important note: The operations above work inside a pattern, but not across multiple patterns. If you dislike this you can make a pattern up to 99 bars long to adopt your needs.

Arrange of patterns: It is possible to arrange patterns in the same way as GarageBand does it: Go into the pattern list, touch edit and then you can drag the patterns in the list to your liking. And remember all those edits are possible while the sequencer is running !

About the drum samples: always a matter of taste, but we anyway plan to give you an import option there.

Ok, long post, i know. But would like to hear your feedback about the sequencer stuff and hope that i'm not totally wrong…

Harry

Thanks for your presence here Harry. I am going to work with iSyn, because the synths are darn good. I will try to get more proficient at the sequencer. But as I said in the post above, just setting the BPM to 140 is a challenge..... I am on an iPad 2 by the way....

UPDATE: Just tried the select/move and it works! I was trying to touch the left side of the note and move it around, and so was having major problems.... IMHO the pop up help is not very clear. I am running off to other things now, but this evening I hope to spend some time with this.

Again Harry, thanks for your response. I always respect a developer that is willing to jump in the middle of a forum like this.....

Well, never mind. You did add the most important thing, namely copy and paste, so I am going to make som cool synth lines and export to NanoStudio, which I would have done anyway.

The synths themselves are worth it's price, so cheer up, it's a fine program. :tu:
