Awesome I'm going to try out the Dxulator. Hexter isn't available anymore.

I don't know if it does, but the old version FM7 ues to load sysex directly.
Gives me a satisfactory result when importing DX7 patches.

FMJ Software's Awave Studio can read & convert nearly all DX-series dump to nearly whatever sample format (eg SF2)

Can't give my word for quality though as I don't have this software.

Thanks, I'm going to check that one out. DXulator is great but it's not that easy or quick to use. Although I have to say I'd rather use the newer and better sfz format than sf2, it appears to handle both.

I forgot to mention that DXulator does load sysex directly. I've only been able to convert one patch at a time, but that way I just convert what I need.

Thanks, one of those should work, the main site isn't hosting anymore due to various issues.

It looks really, really nice. The demo is 30 days, then it's $120. I can't afford anything right now!

Get back to us if you run into any trouble. It's a bit of a weird interface, and some of the sysex files produce garbage for some reason, but most of the patches convert, and when they do, it's the closest thing to a real DX you can get imo. Once you try it you'll be hooked.

The problem is in knowing which patches to convert - because you still need to audition them!

When you load DX7 patches in FM8, the upper register sounds almost like it's going through analog clipping cicuitry, where the metallic ultra-high-end of the sound is squashed into lower frequencies that sound a bit distorted (though it's more pleasant-sounding than actual digital distortion...which isn't saying much). To generalize, FM8 sounds flat and lifeless with less high-frequency information as compared to a DX7.
This may be true, but it's also probably why I like FM8 so much. FM synths often sound so nasty and harsh to me. FM8 sounds gorgeous, lush, warm, smooth, whatever you want to call it. Most accurate emulation? Maybe not, but gets my vote as the best FM VSTi (also loads sysex), probably my favorite synth period.

Yeah, I agree with you, it's a beast. I made it sound like I don't like FM8 at all and that's not the case! And you can produce some gawdawful stuff with the old Yamahas. But I think what's important is that they really are different animals. You're not going to get the same sound from a given patch in most cases. So if what you really want is that DX sound, you're not gonna get it with FM8, but FM8 is a more powerful and easier to use instrument.

You can't match the DX7. You need the crappy digital converters and some digital grit. You can't emulate a flaw! :D :hihi:

Awave does not make a sample out of sysex data.
It read the DX sysex patch data and can convert it to raw sysex format or to a midi file for loading the patch data through your sequenser etc.

I gave Awave demo a trial,it can load sysex and you can save them as .wav,sfz.sf2 etc,but I don't know if they match the real thing
