I used to enjoy SQ8L very much,

BUT

in Cubase 5 and 6 it crashes the whole DAW as soon as you load two instances...and sometimes, also loading the first instance or reloading a project in which SQ8L is used.
As a workaround, I use KORE2 (:'-( another dead in action...) plugin to sub-host it and that works ok, but I think that this is a major issue for working in a modern DAW like Cubase 6.

Some months ago I wrote to the developer who claimed it should be resolved by a new release of SQ8L, but in the meanwhile, nothing happened.

I would pay for having SQ8L and the pro version SQ8X developed and supported: I had an ESQ-1 and a virtual version of it for me is a dream that comes true.

I emailed him and got a response... Sigi is alive and well!

He had dropped SQ8L development but is planning a rebirth (complete VST3 rewrite) of SQ8L/X sometime in the future, but has not started development at this point. He said it may happen or it may not.

In any event it is good to know he is OK.

I hope he'd do a VST2 conversion then, too, because very few hosts support VST3 now.

True and not to sound completely negative , but they are static . After changing the filter in one patch ( for example ) it stays the same for all other patch changes as well as no gui feedback .
As I have said many times before it is a great plugin , I just like to keep interest in it up . Gone but not forgotten so to speak .

Man... i slowly regret getting a Cubase 6 Elements license, MinimogueVA/Luxus not working, SQ8L not working properly... i thought this company actually invented the VST standard. Of course they're not blame for products not supporting the standard a 100% but is that really true? Reaper has a way better VSTi compatibility afaic... correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not very knowledged, but this kinda pisses me off... sorry for offtopic in advance.

Hi all. Great thread but really long so I haven't been able to read all the way through it. I've long wanted an ESQ or an SQ80 but those machines are so heavy and I've never wanted to take the risk of getting one sent to me over ebay (I don't live in the US, UK or continental Europe).

I just have a few questions about the emulator -

How close to the original sound is it really?
How good is the filter?
I understand that the original machines had loads and loads of cool patches that were available on disks. Are these available in the synth or is there a way to use them with it?

It's very close to the original, according to all the people that have owned the real one. The filter is one of the things that was going to be improved in the "pro" version. You got all the avaliable original banks here, thanks to 1-2-Many (it's the last bank):

Yeah what he said . I have an ESQ-1 and the same patch sounds 99.9 the same to me . The hardware can sound a bit more muffled than the plugin ,but the SQ8L can emulate that too. The biggest place the two differed to me was the pulse wave sounds a bit more metallic to me on the vst and the Rez is just a little less juicy but that is not a big strong point in the hardware version either ...so like I said 99.99 % . The plugin wins in a couple places though . Much easier to load memory banks and not like 50 pounds either ,but if you want the hardware I can't discourage you.

Let me start by saying that I love this plugin. A lot. So much in fact that I decided to buy an SQ80.

However, since they're rare as hen's teeth on ebay and a little out of my price range at the moment, I decided to settle for an ESQ1, which is a great synth in it's own right.

Unfortunatly, I've run into a bit of a problem. I know that there are a lot of Ensoniq owners browsing this thread, and the ESQ1 and SQ80 are really similar, so I was hoping to get some help with this problem.

Ive got a question maybe this is normal and maybe not but i notice weird filter "drifting" when im not changing anything by LFO, theres nothing routed to filter but its noticeable at about second 0:02 and second 0:09 of this track, is this normal or what ? What is it exaclty ?
Sometimes my bass sounds how i want it to sound but then it comes this effect and makes the bass muddy for one second or so.

I just posted a couple of my really old '80s songs done on ESQ-1 to my Soundcloud and thought some of you might like to hear them as a reference.

"Listen" is entirely ESQ-1 (drums too!), one single pass (all that music is coming out of the ESQ at once) with some reverb added (Yamaha SPX-90). And my "bedroom singing" on the other 2 tracks of my Fostex X-15.

"Guts" is almost 100% ESQ-1, but it's got a JX-3P playing string sounds, some actual human-performed Simmons Drums over the drum machine, and an obviously human real-guitar solo. But it's mostly ESQ-1. How about that fake Fairlight CMI sound at the 0:20 on? I forget what that was, it might have even been the JX-3P with a BUNCH of reverb. (EDIT: Actually on second thought I'm pretty sure it was the ESQ, a patch based on one of the "choir" samples. We did record it on a second pass with heavy 'verb though, to get that airy tone. (EDIT EDIT: Actually no, it might have been the '3P after all.)) All that polyrythm stuff and bass is ESQ.

(Where credit is due, these were both co-written and co-performed with my original musical buddy, John aka -momo- http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/profile.p ... le&u=84211 The ESQ-1 was his, though I inherited and fixed it a few years ago. It's still sitting beside me as my go-to MIDI contoller to this day. What a great action!)

Amazing, AdmiralQuality! Its cool to hear songs that include a lot of those familiar patches. You must have had the sequencer expansion or else you re-used patterns in a very effiecient way.
