There is a bunch of Yamaha stuff turned up in the store - midi faders and arp thingy. I was wondering about this one too as the hardware version looked interesting.

Glad I held off as I nearly went for it last night. Thanks for the review.

You should play in layer16. This is the solo-play-layer

Apparently it wasn't actually submitted to the US store along with the other territories for some reason (maybe some legal reason?), but it will definitely be available in all countries very soon.

At least for the network-MIDI it uses the standard network-session.
If you connect from the Mac or the PC to this session, you will
receive MIDI on your computer.

Using the camera connection kit doesn't work very well, could be a problem with sysex and clock messages.. Works fine with other ios apps though...

How do you open a "standard network-session" on winxp ?

Thanks, figured it out in the meantime and this works much better.

Being able to use hw and/or vst makes it a bit more interesting, but still, only 16 steps, no cc, fixed velocity, fixed modes and a clumsy interface doesn't make this a lot of fun to use.

I nearly bought it, but then I went for Aurora Studio instead - that's a suprisingly deep app with a ton of flexible features and synth / sampling options.

Anyone here have both TNR-i and the iPhone version of Aurora? If so, I'd be interested to read a comparison between the two - strengths and weaknesses of each, and if one is better suited for one type of use rather than other (composition vs live improv, etc.). Comparisons to SoundGrid would be welcome too.

Just bought Aurora - downloading now. I figured I'd likely be using it more for fun than anything serious so I didn't need to spend twice the price. Also, I like that it allows instrument editing. Seems like the TNR-i might lean more toward live play and improv, where as Aurora appeared (based on the videos) to have more of a focus on song creation, which is how I would prefer to work. I guess I'll find out in a few minutes what it's actually like.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but for anyone who may be interested...for those on iPhones - Aurora isn't exactly the easiest thing to use because the grid buttons are so tiny that it's easy to bump the wrong ones (I guess a stylus would be helpful.) TNR-i has a zoom option, which they were smart to include. That would make it a lot easier to program. However, I quickly found uses for using Aurora's synthesis to edit the presets, so it gets major points for that.

I bought the TNR-I app and find that it is fun and works fine on my first generation iPad. There is a lot to explore in couch, easy chair, or toilet sitting music making. I have yet to try midi out over network or camera adapter. Watching the videos for Aurora on YouTube, that app appears to have many more features. The TNR-I app gets minor negative marks from me for being limited to the built-in sounds and for not having the ability to modulate volume by note number, which can be important for the drum maps. One can always assign a drum sound to an individual layer though. Other than that I find the app to be exceptional in it's ability to inspire interesting poly-rhythmic musical experiments and improv. I am also finding that, as one app store reviewer stated, it works quite well as a device for introducing young children to musical exploration. Under supervision, my six year old (one of three kids!) has really taken to the app. It seems that Aurora also has the qualities that I am liking in the Tenori On app as well. I might get it at another time, but I want to spend more time with TNR-I before I do that.
