Hi Eric,Uncle E wrote:Very cool! I'd like to do this one with your mod:susiwong wrote:As you see, tone control only works in positions 2,3,4, the split ones.
unfortunately what you want is not possible with a 4 layer switch, you'd need a fifth free layer.
Eyb do hint at a bigger version with 8 layers, don't know about availability and dimensions.
Time for a dealer inquiry and a few samples ...
Or you could do series/parallel via a push pull and free up a layer or two.
Doing hibidy's dream setup (modded) would be a breeze, especially since DiMarzios tend to suit Ibanezes well.
He'd still be left with a free layer ...
There's a lot that can be done.
Cheers,
susiwong

It's all good, I'm not heartbroken over it. The last few pages of this thread have been good because it reminded me how much I hate the parallel sounds in my Ibanez's and Tom Anderson.susiwong wrote:Or you could do series/parallel via a push pull and free up a layer or two.

You could do even better ...Uncle E wrote:hibidy, I highly recommend putting in susiwong's mod, you'll get a better balance between the pickup positions this way. One problem I've had with splitting pickups is they always sound harsh, either because of the 500K volume pot or just because they're weaker than normal single coils, so getting the tone pot on the split positions takes care of that while leaving the humbucking positions as they ought to sound.
Follow the original plan to a tee.
Then add in my mod, but use a small trimpot & cap instead of the full size one.
Bingo, preset pos. 2, 3, 4 sweetening plus traditional tone pot for all positions.
To adjust the trim you can leave it dangling out from underneath the pickguard until you found the best setting, then heat shrink it, optionally shorten the wires and put it under the guard for good.
To add insult to injury, you could make the mod switchable via a push pull pot.
In case your split positions could do with more balls, no problem, insert a capacitor into your split wire leading to ground (credits to Brinsley Schwartz for the great idea).
A coil split shortens one of your two coils to ground, right ?
A cap in series acts like a HP filter, so what happens ?
The coil split & cap only shortens higher frequencies to ground, the crossover frequency being determined by the value of the cap.
High frequencies are single coil, @ frequencies below fc the PU remains humbucking, even retaining some hum reduction capabilities.
Cost for the mod maybe 50 ct for a handful of caps to find out the ideal value ...
A good starting point for experiments would be the 10nF to 50nF range, same types you use for passive tone control.
All this passive wiring stuff is great fun, dirt cheap and you don't need an electronics degree.
It's all quite straightforward, really, and can help turn a good guitar into a great one.
Just don't expect to improve the tone of cheap PUs that way, would be too good to be true in most cases.
Still, choosing the right pot and cap values does make a big tonal difference, but that's another topic.
Have fun,
susiwong

You are correct, It is misleading. Should say minimal soldering required as it issusiwong wrote:You know how to take these remarks ...
You can be sure to have full support from all of us in case you decide on trying some mild DIY, including no jokes about eventual mistakes.
All of this is not too hard to do, EMG really offer a no-solder version afaik, but this will probably "limit" you to the standard wiring.
Don't know myself as I don't use EMGs, Dean or Hink will know for sure.
Cheers,
susiwong
Edit : From what I see on the EMG site, the no-solder thing is a bit misleading, you still have to solder the switch and the output jack ...
Unless you buy a complete pickguard, which probably won't fit your guitar.![]()
Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't have hands-on experience with newer EMGs.

Reason i am looking a little bit :/ about EMG is that as i mentioned i got my EMG707 to fit to the Schecter beast, However my regular and battered up but still fine/does the job iron has gone missing
the only other i have is a mini gas-can powered one and well surprise, surprise i got no friggin' gas cans for the thing and well they are a rip off anyway (it looks much 'nicer' but does the same thing with a slightly smaller tip and im skint so im not crumbling to go buy a shitty mini bottle of gas). This leaves me but two quick dabs/drips with an iron to get the damned thing hooked up. TBH It would be less painful a situation if everything required soldering. So its wait until i am able to get over to a friends whom happens to have iron = four/five days probably. My fault but so close its torture
Other than that i love EMG

I enjoy it because it's so dead easy to do, especially on a PRS, Gibson, or tele where you don't even have to take the pickguard off. Today I was getting some great strat tones by simply riding the treble bleed on the volume control into my Key Lime compressor pedal. All this passive wiring stuff is great fun, dirt cheap and you don't need an electronics degree.
